I'll be graduating with my bachelor's in Civil engineering next month and while most people have this notion that civil is a relatively easy major compared to some other engineering fields such as aerospace and electrical etc so the job would be easy too. They fail to realise how tough the job can get given the high stakes. It's a serious profession....you take things lightly and tragedies like this can happen.

I'm still a first year, just barely started on Integration, but as I study and learn more about the math and science behind the designing, it blows my mind how much planning went into building a structure. When I did my first structural detailing, I realized how much work goes into a structure, but no one remembers the builders. Civil engineers bare a great responsibility, which is why we have subjects teaching us about ethics and communication.

in italy, in my "town" and my "province capital", as an engineer and as a civil protection volunteer I am asked, often following tragic events, to speak and explain why. it happened for the earthquakes of 2009, 2012 and 2016. for the flood of 2014 and for the collapse of the bridge in Genoa in 2018 or the collapse of the bridge in Tuscany in 2020. the engineering side comes into play the emotional side, the loss of human life, of buildings with centuries of history and memories. heritage symbols. In addition to the damage to the industrial fabric. so I just wanted to tell you that I understand the difficulty in talking about these things and to expose you with a judgment. I appreciate it. thank you for what you do, you are inspirational

This is why Civil/Structural Engineers should be paid more. If you want a building to safely stand for 40 50 60 years you'd think it would be a good idea to fairly compensate the engineers that design these buildings/structures.

I was told experienced structural engineers make pretty solid cash....how much do they make ?

Paid more by who? The market sets the price, we get paid what we get paid based on market forces.

Mat, thanks for the heartfelt post. Yes, safety first seems to sometimes be at the expense of profits. Who can say that adding more rebar or maybe a slightly higher psi of concrete would have prevented the disaster? It always seems that there are tradeoffs to everything that we do. I guess that we have to learn from this and go on. 😢

Well this kind of unfortunate incidents will actually shows the gravity of the work that engineers do who are always underrated in every success. But I believe that engineering as a whole should also give emphasis to something called compassion as you mentioned in the scenario investigating the building collapse. And my prayers are with those unfortunate victims.

Very thoughtful commentary. People ask me what happened too. I agree that most of the speculation is not good

Could it be that the building soften overtime collecting moisture from the sea?

  • @ArtsFracture1.0

it was built in other times, where we didn't have much technology of concrete, or the best theory of design structural. now we have more chances to do the best design with the technology and more theory and the others opportunities..

I somewhat disagree here. I think the engineers shouldn't shy away at all even if they find it 'cool' cause deep interest will have the best results.
If I died there that day, I would want the engineers to examine it as much as possible, no matter what attitude they have towards the situation. That way, none of those people would die in vain. Also, if I was the family, I would not get mad if the engineers found it exciting cause that means their positive attitude will help them dig into it farther. That attitude could make them obsessed with it and that can actually help a lot. Of course, they should still act sensible though.

Yeah, I feel the pressure man, 💔its really unfortunate we are feel sorry for the loss of those people. To the construction industry unexpected failures can happen..The building wasn't really constructed in a poor way I believe it was done to the best of their knowledge.
