His sense of self-importance - "This is the pic they'll use for the documentary »The mind of a serial killer«" this is no PTSD talking here, it's a narcissist.

I agree that he is a narcissist but he is also a narcissist with PTSD...for whatever it's worth. Which in this case isn't much because I don't think that is why he killed her. He killed her mainly because he is a narcissist. Would he have killed her without the PTSD? Maybe. maybe not. Would he have killed her without being a narcissist? Probably not.

@@julieoluna8887 you are assuming that this man killed innocent women and children (and I guess you include innocent men in that assumption). Most soldiers don't kill innocent people nor are they trained to do so. But PTSD is typically related to experience of living through an extreme state of fear. I don't think it is necessarily complaining about it to simply recognize that being in war would typically put someone in an extreme state of fear. I don't think it had anything to do with why this guy killed anyone and it sounds like you don't either.

Shooting your wife in the face with her own gun speaks of really deep resentment, jealousy and hatred. He wanted to erase her personally. I don't know why, but excessive love professing sticky notes they found around their place speaks to me more about someone terrified trying to appease their abuser because they are leaving the house, than genuine love professing. She probably suffered even longer abuse before getting killed.

Disagree. She was helping him & encouraging him all the time. He was dependant on her & couldn't be happy even with all that love. He needs healing & serious therapy. But he didnt tell anybody he was getting so crazy. I agree that she was treating him somewhat like he was made of glass. Unfortunately, he's not ok & she couldn't fix it. It probably emasculated him that she was so careful & treating him like an invalid. He's really sick & no one seemed to realize it. But he should have been in a mental hospital BEFORE.

@@elizabethjarvie6077 hi. Thanks for writing my reply.
I would add that combat troops have some degree PTSD. Their transition from combat abroad to living back home requires at least a year of treatment from the military. Their emotional, physical and mental health must give them back what their military service took from them.
Iraq was a confusing mess. Civilians died because everything about Iraq, the clothes, the cities, the desert, the language is strange and unfamiliar.
Our soldiers knew that they could die on the road, get shot by a family, die from a child/bomb, get ambushed anywhere- even on base.
      165,000 -400,000 Iraqi civilians died from 2003-2022.
Service people who fought in this forever war need to be supported financially, medically, psychologically by the U.S. government and the U.S. military.
Bush, Cheney, Congress and the Pentagon spent ONE TRILLION, killed 4,500 Americans, wounded 30,000 Americans in a country that had nothing to do with 9/11 or bin Laden or "weapons of mass destruction".
Since September 11, 2021 30,000 veterans and active duty personnel have committed suicide.
Benjamin and Jennifer Sebena are casualties of a war to prove a point- the U.S. is willing and able to strike anywhere, anytime.
Benjamin was and is crazy. He should have been committed when he left the Marines.
Jennifer is a huge loss. The notes on the fridge were beautiful. She shined.
I'm sorry for family, friends and their community.
Instead of preventing the grief and pain of hundreds, the establishment punishes one. It makes no sense.

My uncle served in Vietnam. When he came home no one talked about it to him and he did not speak to anyone about what happened. He would have nightmares and while I spent summers at my grandma’s, I could hear his yells and cries while sleeping mostly every night.
The day the first Gulf War started and the TV coverage of the rockets shooting into the air broke all his memories free. He spent that night having flashbacks of his time in Vietnam. He killed himself the next day, after the flashbacks hadn’t gone away. There is so much trauma for those who serve during wartime. However, not many become killers back home. There is a lot more that is at play then PTSD.

Having PTSD can make you feel out of control and it can lead to you developing controlling behaviour with your friends and family, but you still know right from wrong; I think the state got it right, he felt jealous and had a need to control her, when he couldn't, he killed her. What you are discussing here is rather meaningless in light of the fact that human beings rarely talk with perfect grammar. Most American speakers of English use a "sloppy grammar" and often use the past tense and present tense of most verbs as if there was no difference between them. Monitor your own speech for a day or for a week and discover how "sloppy" your grammar is in a number of different ways.

I remember once speaking with a former soldier where our backgrounds, in terms of growing, up as kids, seemed to be virtually identical. However, he had been part of the Gulf War, and ended up with a smorgasbord of issues stemming from his time in the Middle East. I remember thinking that if I had been in a similar situation, I probably would have ended up being just as messed up as he was. I cannot help but think that with Ben having killed dozens of people in war, it might have changed him as a person. I'm not saying that he should be freed because of that, but I would suggest cutting him some slack given his circumstances. In a world of true justice, I think Cheney, Rice, Rumsfeld and Bush should all serve some of Ben's time being that they were drivers of a conflict that the US should never have been a part of - a conflict which, most likely, contributed - to some degree at least - to his actions.

PTSD is real! My dad suffered from it, he had PTSD from the Vietnam war....he was the most kind and gentle man but when he would have flashbacks he became someone totally different. It was so sad and terrible. My dad became a minister and pastored a church for 25 years, he loved and supported his parishioners with wise and Godly councel, everyone loved him. He helped so many people and made a difference in the lives of hundreds people...however, he still suffered silently all those years. As a child, I didn't understand the episodes he would have anytime he heard loud noises like fireworks or something that sounded like war...he would start trembling and would try to find his weapon and acted out as if he were actually in warfare. He would go hide in the bushes around our house like he was waiting for the enemy to come. Other times he would just grab his head with his hands and cover his ears, crying and tryin to hide. It was heartbreaking to see my dad suffer through those episodes because he was my hero...in his later years he actually worked for the VA, counseling other soldiers and helping them obtain their VA benefits and the care they deserve....one man he was counseling actually went into the bathroom and shot himself taking his own life. My dad was the person that found him. It affected my dad severely, and two days later my dad took his own life at his home. Our family was crushed and has never been the same. So I know how PTSD works and how it can kill. But my dad never threatened to kill anyone, unlike the man in this story. I don't believe that it was PTSD that was driving this man to kill, there's no excuse for that except for jealousy and greed. IMHO

Actually PTSD can cause psychosis that lasts days, even weeks. You apparently have no experience with folks suffering from PTSD, & logic dictates if you aren’t educated on the topic you *really* shouldn’t rush judgement on anyone. And I’m not strictly speaking to combat related PTSD - rape survivors, car crash survivors, assault survivors, even habitually abused children experience PTSD which can *severely* impact their perception of reality. Are you aware of the suicide rate associated with PTSD sufferers?
Not excusing his actions, but yes they *absolutely could* be caused by untreated PTSD.
Not everyone experiences PTSD the same exact way, and not everyone handles it the same {or as well as another}… but every sufferer will tell you they do not feel like their normal, *rational* selves if//when it reaches the point of psychosis - is actually the textbook definition *Of* psychosis; Losing Touch w/ Reality.

This channel is the perfect representation of ethical true crime coverage. It never feels exploitative, unlike most other content of this nature. Tragedy and trauma have seemingly become an entertainment phenomenon. It's natural to be curious, or even to a certain extent, to "enjoy" learning about the things that horrify us. But so often, real lives and suffering are reduced to sensationalism and spectacle.
There can be value in sharing these stories, but only when they're discussed with respect and actual empathy for the victims.
JTL is one of the few channels I've found to present true crime in a way that doesn't make me feel icky for watching it.

I disagree, I think most people watch True Crime for the same reason you do....not for kicks or out of morbid curiosity. You have only to glance at the comment section to see that 95% are written out of genuine compassion. We relate to True Crime as human beings, the genre gives us an insight into our own humanity, about the fragility of our existence, about our own mortality as well as an understanding of ourselves & the human condition.

The comments from viewers are almost always empathetic and respectful, unlike much of the true crime content, itself. I'm often interested in cases I see covered by other channels, but so much of the time, I feel great unease about the sensational tone of the videos, and I feel guilty for watching it. I'd rather support channels like this that discuss these tragedies with the greatest sensitivity possible, and in a way that never feels at all disrespectful to the victims.

@@danielhollingworth1090 You explained that so perfectly. I totally agree with you. I really resonate with what you said about how true crime reminds us of the fragility of our own existence. I think about that so much.
There really is so much to be learned from true crime. For me, I'm always left feeling extremely grateful for my own life, and more mindful of just how easily it can be taken away. I also think that hearing these stories can help us spot potential danger in our own lives, and gives us the awareness needed to better protect ourselves from becoming victims, ourselves.

He was clearly having episodes of violence and inability to stop his rages.

Her boyfriend is up at all hours of the night lashing out, waking me up, sounds like he's about to fall through my ceiling, and frankly sounds like he is possessed. Our condo board has been tip-toeing around this situation because he is supposedly mentally ill. It is now in our condo attorney's hands, and I'm hoping we could start fining these peckers because something has to be done to put a stop to his outlandish behavior. The dude just milks off of her, and I personally think she loves him more than herself, which is a sad situation.

I have had the police out here at least ten times already, but they can't do anything unless he wants an ambulance called to be medically checked out and/or they see signs of abuse on his girlfriend. Like I say, it's a slippery slope because she's claiming mental health for the reasoning behind his belligerent behavior. Management can't disclose what is taking place w/the condo attorney due to confidentiality reasons, but she did state that upstairs neighbors have a certain period of time within which to respond; and if not, protocols are in place for handling this, which I'm assuming are the fines. However, if he is required to show proof of his illness -- which I'm not sure how that would even work with HIPAA, but I'm sure the condo attorney knows what he can and can do in this situation -- and does, what then... I'm just stuck living like this? I really don't want to move and would feel bad even trying to sell this place to another person and having someone else dealing with this. It seems like mentally ill people have more rights these days than your average Joe.

Instead he just tried to cover up that he murdered her so he could just go on with his life. As sweet and caring as Jennifer was, I think he was so coddled from too much attention from her and her switch to night shift possibly made him terrified he would lose her. It is so heartbreaking to hear her mother talk about how she couldn't even see her daughter because Jennifer's face was so badly damaged from the gunshots.
