My gosh, Critics all around this place knocking on Billy. I truly believe the guy has a Hall of Fame Rock career, was one of the biggest Beatles fans ever and has a resume a mile long, and now people telling him what he did wrong on this song. Unreal. I'll wait to hear what Paul says about, that's the only opinion that would matter.
I agree that Paul's opinion would count most. My opinion is that Bill didn't do so well with this one. When I read that Billy Joel had done this cover, I got really excited -- thought it would sound like all of his best piano-based songs. Not quite.
Yes Billy is a hall of famer. 100+ million albums sold, multiple Grammy awards and the record for the most Consecutive sold out shows in Madison Square Garden. Anybody that hates on Billy Joel was simply just not paying attention. Not to mention he covered this song when he’s in his 60s. Paul recorded this when he was in his 40s I think. Big difference. Great song either way.

Great version. Billy intentionally sounded gravelly and very much like he used to sound in his younger days. You can tell he went for it on here. He sang live and let die first so he could put his best into this one and go for broke. He wouldn't sing this way in a concert because it shreds his vocal cords.
or he jus can't hit the notes like he used...its not a dig. he is older and can't hit the notes. it's not a great version of this song. it really should've been produced better...especially during the yowls and growls toward the end. but the soft moments sound like he could have sang this song originally.

That's because Billy, like most all singer-songwriters, are mainly SONGWRITERS and not singers. Steve Winwood is one of the very few exceptions to that rule.

I love Billy Joel, he's one of my favorite artists. But it seems like he's having a pretty rough time singing this which doesn't make it sound all that great. He just doesn't have that powerful voice he used to. But you can't blame him, that's what happens with age. I give him credit for doing trying this anyway. Love you Billy Joel!

You know who sings McCartney best? Paul McCartney. Billy Joel's take doesn't add to the original IMO - or the Paul's live single that came out later (the studio version was never a single). And how many times has this tune been covered in the exact same style? Brian Wilson took the under-heard classic "Wanderlust" from 1980 and it's the kind of song that sounds made for him. Although he didn't write it, the arrangements, vocals - it now feels like a BRIAN song. So far, "Wanderlust" is the most appropriate match-up - Brian Wilson took the 1980 song and made it truly his own. Dylan also growls his way through "Things We Said Today" - for an overheard song, he too made it his own (and I'm not particularly a fan of his). I look forward to getting the double disc for certain tracks. Too bad they didn't get Randy Newman to do "Lady Madonna" - he keeps it a secret, but he digs the tune and has done rough studio takes over the years... starting with arranging the whole thing and playing piano for Fats Domino's "Fats Is Back" in '68... The producer of this comp, Ralph Sall, did great with remixing and putting out McCartney's then-lost classic "A Love For You". By Paul. No doubt he loves Paul, but who doesn't? And if you don't, you can't deny the man's melody writing ability. To me, Paul can do almost everything in music (singing, writing, arranging, producing, playing every instrument) and business and succeed (how much is MPL alone worth even WITHOUT the post 1971 Paul-written tracks?). He's magic.
the latest performance at Saturday Night Live will argue with you on that one.

Billy is a baritone now, he was a tennor roughly 35 years ago. When you take that into account I think it's a very daring song choice. That considered he did good. I completely agree that the mixing/engineering is less than stellar, and this project in general has had some baffling amateurish mixing touches, almost as if they let an intern loose in the studio. I think this album is just a bit of fun, nothing to be taken too seriously despite the presence of these big legendary performers.
Much nicer than listening to McCartney screeching through a song.

First 28 seconds are flawless, don't really mind those opening vocals poking you in the face that much. Then, with the flick of a light switch, it suddenly needs a lot of reverb to not sound awful. Good lord. BJ did a great job with this but we all need a little touch-up now and then and this can be great.
Well what do you expect he was born in 47 and had a 20+ year career in singing and he hasn't had anything studio recorded in over 20 years
Before you make a comment on his voice, remember this is a 60 year old baritone singing a song sung by a tenor at 30 years old.
Billy is a favourite of mine but someone should be daring to tell him his straining voice doesn't do this justice. It's flat in places.

Who did the motions graphics on this? Truly stellar the way those bubbly things seem to zoom out, and that sort of chintzy script with those sort of canned 3-D effects seem to twirl around like it's 1989.
I have to state that I am a huge fan of the Beatles , McCartney and Billy Joel !
Now Im sure everyone that listens to the second half of the first verse will hear Billy struggle to get up there and sings as flat as , I am amazed he didn't redo the take. I have never heard Billy joel sound flat so I am astounded.he just cant get up there , maybe would have been prudent to drop the key . Love the concept though, McCartney is top 5 songwriters of all time, full stop .

Someone posted this sounded like someone at karaoke and if so I want to know what karaoke they are going to. While Billy is now 65 he gave the performance his all and it is that "real" emotion I've never heard out at a karaoke.

I love Billy and he gave this a good try. But the truth is, this is pretty rough and not in a good way. You can hear the struggle to hit the high notes. About 15 years ago he could have done this much better, but his range has dropped quite a bit. He has even changed to lower keys for some of his own songs, which he should have done with this one.
In addition, it sounds like they pitch shifted his voice upward to compensate, which makes him sound worse than if they just did it in a lower key.

It's clear that the mix is different. Billy's voice sounds a lot better in the iTunes version. I tried to line up the chorus heard in the iTunes preview with the version here on RUclips and Billy's vocals didn't match any of the three choruses in the song.
Someone at the label screwed up and posted an bad track. This video should be replaced.

Could be better, but who cares? It's a great song, by a great artist, and a pretty good cover. I doubt Billy cares what most of you think of this cover. It's more of a tribute out of respect for one of the greatest artists of the 20th/21st century.

i too am not a fan of some of the Artists rendition's of Mc Cartneys songs , Billy Joel's rendition of Maybe i'm amazed is not as good as it should be . billy Joel has been in the business long enough he should be able to perform better than he does on this song. Corinne bailey Rae's Performance of Bluebird IMHO is stellar but i am a sucker for her Voice so maybe not another's cup of tea . Gotta give BJ a pass for not nailing this cover. For one thing, McCartney's vocal range in this song was ridiculous, for another thing, McCartney was BJ's idol...so this is more of a tribute than anything else.
That said...parts of this cover he sang pretty well, but there are also parts when he sounds just like the Gorn from the original Star Trek.
When Billy was 19, he could sing like Paul McCartney (check out Cold Spring Harbour). At 65, not such much.

I'm somewhat dissapointed in this cover of the song. When I first found out that BJ was doing this cover I thought it would really be "in his wheelhouse". The growly voice just really detracts from the beauty of the song. I was really hoping for better...
