As an aspiring comic creator I love this channel and appreciate all the effort put into these. Sean Phillips and Ed Brubaker are a legendary creative team that doesn't get their due recognition. They need their stories adapted on the big screen.

I think there's one in the works.

Kill or be killed is being adapted by Chad Stahelski who directed the John Wick movies!

Artist are terribly afraid of leaving blank space (negative space) in their works. For one, they are afraid that people will think that they just didn't give it their all (they didn't render everything), making the end product a cheap one -- which is certainly wrong. Another reason is the skill that is needed to pull of such a composition, so that the artist himself does not feel that it is a a waste of space. This worries are especially apparent in works that have a longer schedule than others.

Yeah I think it all depends on style... An economy of line might permit more panels that are just characters, for example, but the trend nowadays in US comics at least, is to kind of render *everything*. But also by doing that, you do get chance to drop moments out for more effect. If it was even between backgrounds and empty space, would those moments have as much impact?

    Always struggled with backgrounds, myself.

They're tough. I get the sense with Phillips' work that he uses a lot of ref and stuff? Always helps, anyway.

I depend a lot on programs to create a consistent environment, especially lately. I recently finished a long-running online comic (Zebra Girl), and I relied heavily on a SketchUp model I created to keep the central location consistent. Other times I use photos of my home town. Either way, I get a lot of use out of my light box. I often wonder if it wouldn't be easier working on a tablet than with traditional pen and paper.
