My first Dead concert was New Years Eve '71 at Winterland. Garcia played with the New Riders from 8pm until midnight. At the stroke of midnight out came a white guy and a black guy both wearing diapers. Balloons tied in nets on the ceiling were released onto the crowd below as the dead blurted out their first song with the diaper boys out front wildly dancing. By the third song, gone were the diapers but the dancers were still there enticing fans in the crowd to disrobe and join in up on stage. The stage now packed with thirty odd naked pulsating bodies and the Dead buried in the center, played on...Somewhere in the middle they played The Other One and it hooked me hard, forever! The Dead played until 10am the next morning, Garcia had played for 14 hours! You don't see that anymore nor the price of those tickets.

That was my first Dead show as well. Ended up leaving around 4:30 am and they were still going strong.

The acid allows you to stay up for a long long time, but that seems REALLY long.
I love their hard core: Dark, Stephen, Other. This is one of the best Other One.

The over all album this came from is excellent, for my money having been an observer in the scene from the beginning, this recording is intensely pleasurable and a reel one of a time.Nuff said.

hartford 72, during the 'gentle' part, they made the entire first five rows kind of--hard to explain--we all groaned as the thing swept over and through us all, like currents affecting kelp in the sea---we collectively went whoa------of course the purple guy at the door handing out owsley acid may have had something to do with it--but it was amazing--unforgettable to this day--it was like we got out of the way of it while embracing it--ya had to be there---i'm still there!--leave me there please

I’ve been listening to the dead pretty much since I was born so around 16 years now and it sucks that I was born when I was because I really wanted to see the dead in all there glory. My grandpa and dad always tell me story’s on how beautiful their music was in person

Is there an adage more true than that you don't know what you've got until it's gone? Listening to all these Dead classics only makes me appreciate just how great they were - and miss them more.

Grew up as a youngin in the DMV listening to Motown. Became a "Deadhead" in college in the early 70's in PGH. My world of music is still 360. Sounds awesome to this day.

Saw Dead and Co last week at Deer Creek on some Lucy, there were about 3 times throughout the show I thought they were gonna play this, but they never did. Still the best concert I’ve ever seen

My dads a dead head and i know quite a few dead songs from hearing them growing uo but never remember this but when i came across it and heard the lyrics it became one of many favorites now...the way he comes in with that spanish lady come to me she lays on me a 🌹

This is the version I grew up on - Phil is amazing all the way thru. I love the crowd at around 14:20 yelling in the background after Garcia's breakdown solo.....
And you know that was LOUD..because this is a direct to board recording. Those mics are directional, meaning they only pick up sound directly in front of the vocalists, facing AWAY from the crowd...im a sound tech :) In other words, the audience cheer was so strong that it reflected back from audience to stage and like a ricochet, into the vocal mics (and any drum mics), yet enough energy was left to create the audience excitement we hear on tape.. Impressive. :)
This song (The Other One) is the very definition of the "Bay Area Sound". Phil just rips this up!

One of Phil’s best stories is when his grandma invites him to join her one evening while she listens to a classical music performance. I picture Phil hopping out in his jammies, hopping on grandma’s lap and snuggling in for some warm cuddle time. He doesn’t know it’s Brahms First that night. He doesn’t know the wrath of God start. But he hears it and starts from that moment chasing it. He found it here. And Jerry knows he found it when he yells, “Phil,” at 5:08.
Great One-onstage between the drum kits, perhaps? Really ate dessert first…but this is it and thank you for your efforts on our collective behalves…

The "DRUM INTRO" is in reality what the Dead did between what would be set 2 and set 3. They call it "Drums/Space" or just "SPACE" my friend.
