Extreme container lift at a power plant + box truck rollover!

  • What a day for Big Flipper, our 75ton rotator! Started off with a difficult container job in Palm Springs and ended with a loaded box truck rollover by my shop.
    I'm no stranger to working next to power lines, but working at a power plant with supervisors down my throat is an entirely different animal. The lines here have 10x more voltage than what I'm used to on city streets, so extreme care and precision was required. Doing my best, I was able to safely remove the container from the broken chassis and set it onto a good one. From there, the bad chassis was chained and set onto the customer's trailer.
    On my way back to the shop, we received a call for a rollover under a bridge and I was able to arrive just in time to help out my dad. All in a day's work at Pepe's Tow.

      As hard as it is, you have to get rid of that mentality. That's why we are as big as we are and constantly recommended. Even if I want to, you have to picture yourself in their shoes. If I was an engineer or employee there, how do I know that the random tow truck guy knows what he is doing or his trained to work around high voltage wires? A lot can go wrong, they have to know you are more than capable of handling it.

    Josh, those zinc-plated chains are great for working near or in a sea salt spray environment. Places such as sea coasts or places where salt is used to salt roads in the winter. They will help prevent the steel in the links from rusting or oxidizing. The zinc acts as a sacrificial layer if you ever notice the zinc platting starting to wear away that's the time to replace them.

    The load cell is registering the tension in the container strap. The angle of the container strap , toward horizontal from straight up vertical, puts more tension in the strap than just the weight of the container. The increase is about 40% for that angle. The actual weight on the strap is about 60% of 26000 or about 16000lb for one end of the container or 32000 for the whole container. 32000 would be the actual load on Flipper.

    • @PepesTowingService
      @PepesTowingService  3 года назад +2

      Correct, they teach you (at least in the classes I've attended) to properly use a load cell and why every operator needs one. I've seen people perform some sketchy lifts at extreme angles with subpar equipment. That is how you flip or damage your truck and break equipment. It's interesting to see how much equipment has as I'm winching in, at various angles and with different positions. That is why I always over rig the way I do.

    From the looks of it, the lines you were working under are either 115 KV, or 220. That's spicy, but just south of that, there's a 500 KV line. The employees of the power plant are absolutely right to say that theses lines are extremely dangerous. Unless you go to Québec, Indiana, Ohio, West Virginia, you are not going to fine much of any lines with higher voltages. The long range transmission lines in theses areas are 735KV and 765KV.

    I appreciate you vast knowledge of the rotator. If you have a chance, please take a basic static loading engineering class. In situations like this, it would help you to keep your boom away from power lines.

      My boom was away from the lines, 15' for 115,000v lines. Different people wanted me further away

    Working around them power sub stations is ALWAYS a pain in the arse! I remember one time we did a job where they were expanding the building footprint. I was 60 feet from the gate to get in, with my transfer trailer. I moved 30 foot into the project site. Each time I went in, or out of the gate, they had to lock it behind me. Before I could move the truck anywhere on the project site, they had to have one of their guys escort me around as a ground guide. I worked a week on that project between digging out the foundation & footings for the building, & hauling in the backfill materials. I was sure glad when that gig was over with!

      No disputing that. I think the problem was conflicting information from multiple sources. There should have been one guy from Edison talking to Josh. Not the time or place for confusion.

    Get a little magnet for the load cell reader that way you can put it on the back of the truck and see the weight...

    When Josh and Big Flipper arrive, all the supervisors should stand back and watch. They do not realize the power of Big Flipper or the skill and precision of Josh, Big Flipper's master.

    I used to run cans to the rail roads and those 20 footers are very dangerous and heavy
    I used to see them rolled over on the worthless and high priced p.a. turnpike.

    I hate to be the only one to tell you this but the electrical guys are not joking with you. I worked as a lineman for 30 years those lines are 30,000 volts and more, the electricity in those lines can jump up to 20 feet especially in humid weather.
