This looks really good, but the price is pretty high. Now Aldi have several new products I saw this morning. Asian style Nasi Goreng (rice, pork, vegetables) or Bami Goreng (noodles, pork, leek). Both are fresh, not frozen and cook quickly in the microwave. I've bought the Nasi Goreng many times from Lidl, but only now is Aldi also selling these. Each pack is *800g* for £2.99, so they are really good value. Another item I saw in Aldi was fresh pollock fillets in the fish section, £1.99. I have often passed comment here that we should eat more pollock and I'm going to prepare these as goujons and deep fry them in a small pan. And in Lidl, the frozen food section has been hugely expanded since last week, with several new freezer cabinets and a large selection of frozen food I've not seen before in Lidl.
Tried this after seeing your Madras review, with the rice from the same Bom Bahia range. Found it pleasant and flavourful and, since my wife and I are no longer in the first flush of youth and have smallish appetites, the portion size was adequate for two. Takeaway fish and chips or pizza, delivered, cost around £20.00 where I live, so not not a bad price for a tasty supper. We'll be trying the Madras this week, provided it's in stock . . . Keep up the good work, Gareth!
They have just started a meal deal on this range and the house of yum ones, mix and match any 2 mains and any 2 sides for £10 which is decent I reckon.
I've also had both of these after your first review, I found this one to be far superior to the madras one, very flavoursome and a step up from a normal fake-away take-away. For me the madras was too hot and I couldn't taste anything but spice. But as you say we are all different and have differing tastes. Keep on making the videos and I'll catch you on the next one.
Some pilau rice and a nan would go down well with that . Best butter chicken I had was in Sri Lanka about 6 years ago . Only thing is it’s a long way to go for a curry. 🍛
Buying the beef madras today off the back of your review 😁, walked past it a few times in ASDA but today is the day. Wife and I enjoy watching your reviews, keep up the great work 👍
They're easily worth that though. The Bom bahia range offer easily the best curry you can get from a supermarket. If they reduce the price it'll just end up like any other supermarket curry.
Buy a pizza from Dominos it’ll cost you £15, Fish & chips from a fish shop or a Chinese/Indian takeaway will also cost you well over £10. You seem to be still living in the 90’s when a ready meal was £1.99 😅. Good luck trying to buy all the ingredients & make this yourself for under £5 - I’m waiting for your update !
I doubt it would be cheaper by the time you have bought all the ingredients, including maybe some exotic spices, cream etc. And you would need a recipe. You can't just throw ingredients together and expect the meal will turn out like the ASDA product.
Gaz, when it first came out of the heat, wow! Peeling the film off it, it just looked AMAZING! That delicious oil sitting on the top... I'm surprised you didn't enjoy it more than you did. Expensive though, as you say. Do try cooking more curries.
After your first review we tried these the next day and they had put the price up to £5.50 down here in the south. They did the same with the Gino Italian range when it came out a couple of years ago and people stopped buying them because they became too expensive. I found the current Aldi Butter Chicken version better in taste and it was cheaper.
Gareth another great review thanks 👍 Maybe you could review the ‘Charlie Bingham’ chicken tikka masala? It’s the best curry I’ve ever had from any supermarket. All the best Gavin
The Morrisons' lamb rogan josh & chicken jalfrezi are repeat buys for me. Chilled in their rectangular plastic containers (good to be recycled for freezing your own stuff), this Take Away range currently costs £3.99. Just the curry, no rice or sundries. Around five minutes in the microwave. The jalfrezi comes with big chunks of red pepper and onion. A bag of Morrisons' microwaveable rice (choose your variety) is a nice companion.
I made a slo cooker curry last Sunday. It was quite spicy and delish. I only had to buy the chicken breast, had all the spices etc. So it didn't cost much. It fed at least 4 so I'm sticking to that. Great review. Now I know not to buy them!😂😋
Great review, as always. I really don't like supermarkets not marking the spice rating correctly. I've had Madras that wasn't anywhere near, but I've also had Rogan Josh that was spicier than my local restaurant.
I get this occasionally for convenience - yes it’s expensive at £5 but for convenience and as a treat every so often it’s fine. I eat it myself too - definitely not enough for 2. At the end of the day though you’re better buying the ingredients to make your own curry then you’d have a batch to freeze for future.
If they listed it as for one person all of the nutritional information would be off the chart. Some of these are already at 60% of your salt/saturated fat & thats when they split the numbers across 2 people - if every single light on the traffic light label was red they wouldn’t sell as many & they’d have idiots like Jamie Oliver criticising them for selling unhealthy food
As a fan of hotter curries, think i will avoid this one. I did try the Madras and enjoy it, but didn't pack the heat of your typical Madras. Would recommend the gunpowder potatoes from this range, again not massively spicy, but very tasty and certainly not bland.
Hi Gaz, I had to put up with this curry as the Beef Madras was sold out!. I'm going to have to go in again today to see if I can find it!. I thought the Butter Chicken was ok as well, my little boy loved it!!
The spices are probably mellow because of this smoked aspect I mean it’s a one time dish but yeah I agree Gaz the creamy aspect doesn’t do the spice justice but glad you enjoyed it Gaz thanks for the video Looking forward for another Indian takeaway 🍛 review Cheers 🍻 2,4-DNP
I usually go for spicy, and went to get the madras not long after you reviewed it, but they were oos, so I deciede to go for something different and got this one. Definitely agree on the lack of heat, there's nowt there. It was nice, but wished I'd gone for the madras. Especially as you're pushing a tenner by the time you get the rest of the meal in !
Similar to you, I prefer my curry spicy hot. Madras and Vindaloo hot! We went to an Indian restaurant a few months back and I had the butter chicken too .. I don't think they put spices in it lol - Tastes good but doesn't register on the 'hot' rating :D
Good one ! I tried the previous Beef Madras which was 'OK' for taste. Since then I have noticed that my local ASDA are having probs selling these at £5, and they often appear in the bargain-section at £3.40. They are good at that price. SO best advice - always check the bargain section. Bought two for the freezer yesterday.I find these cook well in the air-fryer with the cellophane removed for the last 5 mins. I also add some chillis to bring up the heat.
I agree they are slimey putting up prices around the store, I went on to the takeaway web page and those box sets are now at £8 and 2 weeks ago £6... P.S. I do beep beep beep but unfortunetly I can not go on pause mode 🤣🤣🤣 mr smartprice
Hi, Nice Review. Indian in Ireland is about €13 to 17 Takeaway, on average now takeaway Chinese is €9 to 14. £5:00 isn't cheap but if its nice its Okay most meals in that line have gone up in price. I'd have it with loads of rice to soak up the sauce, and some Chips on the side. I have a lot of Hot sauces and stuff in the fridge just in case the Meal needs Saving.
When you consider the sauce pouches available from Home Bargains for 99p (Indi Grand authentic sauces) it makes this quite expensive IMO, good review Gareth
Interesting that as I tried both this and the beef and actually preferring this one! Guess it just depends on your preference for the curry sauce. Did not realise the chicken was from abroad though!! That is how they are managing costs.
for me its indian restaurant standard, so a fiver is good value, compare it to £9.50 charlie bigham curry, although you get rice with that. The beef madras in the bom bahia range is the best of all, try the lamb super spicy one - it killed me!
I know you're a big lad Gareth but for most of us 200g curry with rice, bargi and naan would be plenty.😃 One thing to consider is that the nutritional info works on it being 200g portion so you'll need to double the sat fat - nearly 20grammes!😵💫
A butter chicken in an Indian restaurant/desi pub would be around £10. But it would be authentic with the correct spices and the traditional Indian way of making the tandoori chicken for butter chicken, ie: in a tandoor. The chicken in that curry was not tandoori, you can see the chicken does not have skewer marks. And we do not use nutmeg in butter chicken, we don't actually use nutmeg at all in North India where this dish is from, funnily enough, Bombay or Mumbai as it is now known, is in the South of India.
They often add add Nutmeg to "authentic" spices for Sims reason, that's why I've always avoided them. Get more authentic powders in supermarkets now but I used to always go to the Asian markets.
I wouldn’t buy a butter chicken anyway as it’s too mild for me, and it was never going to have any heat. But it’s great you do these reviews for people who do eat mild curries.😊
Looks tasty but no excuse for lack of spice. At that price should taste the spices whether hot or not. I'd be interested to see what you think of the Waitrose fiery chicken curry. Great review as always!
i tried the madras and the mixed grill i think it was , after your last review , ive never bought them since which says it all , i tend to buy iceland chicken vindaloo £3 each or two for £4 , i like them but understand we all have different tastes . keep up the good work .
The Portuguese have had a lot of influence over the years, its was they who introduced chillies to India having found them in South America (16th C I think.)
I've only tried the Keralan Style Chicken Curry version and recommend as the best supermarket curry i've had - tastes a lot better then the typical and is 50p cheaper then M&S! I heat up in the air fryer and add stir in milk due to the thickness of the sauce. Definitely not big enough for sharing!!
We only keep the Gastro Aldi chicken jalfreizi in the freezer for handiness and if the wife want's an easy evening, or had a busy day, we also have the Gastro Lasange, really nice, don't like that one Gareth, a 6 is about right, they should have put a sachet of rice in for the price to make a meal out of it and soak the sauce.
Those curries (lamb beef chicken 3 in the range) are going up to £6.50 or at least that's what it says in my local asda where they are advertised as "try me now before i go to my regular price of £6.50. I have tried the beef and lamb but not tried this one as I don't like butter chicken and in general i find many smoked food are too artificially smoked and unappealing. Not sure of the indian resteraunts near you but you're not getting them for £8-£9 in my area more £10-12 plus all the extras rice naans etc
OK, Gareth, the chicken could have been imported from Brazil, the UK started importing Brazilian chicken in 2017. We had previously soursed chicken from within the EU, the Netherlands and Poland were our largest chicken suppliers, that has changed since Brexit. Brazil is now the largest exporter of chicken to the UK.
400g is a sharer curry imo. It’s supposed to be served with rice and maybe another side like a naan. I have had this and it’s very nice, but only as good as the Iceland luxury curries which are 3 for £10
I think a fiver is a bit much especially for chicken although I understand these are pretty good curries. Sorry for being late but on top of all the usual age related my boys decided to bring me a stinker of a cold back so been half laid up for a few days but its back is broke touch wood :). When you removed the film didn't that look like the business but would have to add some chilli flakes.
Gaz now you do a bit of cooking please try this super simple chicken tikka masala .. ok fry chicken in skillet with oil bit of butter 1 garlic clove crushed. Then one golden brown add 1 tin cream of tomato soup then 1 heaped tablespoon of tikka masala paste season with a pinch of salt and 1 teaspoon of sugar, cook for 15-20 min and garnish with chopped coriander. Serve with rice or chips and naan. Job done and feed the whole family for around £6
I think the "per half pack" traffic light system is merely to make the product look healthier. Double them up & the row of red lights might be a bit offputting, but it obviously only serves one hungry boy.
Hi Gareth, It's a shame you buy some thing and it's not what you expect, it may be nice and ok but not up to the mark. A great honest review, take care👍
For mecand my partner £5 plus £1 for a bag of Uncle Bens or similar is a reasonable tea for £6. Defo wouldn't eat the whole lot ourselves and as you said it needs rice, popadoms etc 😊
In Sainsburys for £10 you could buy 4 chicken breasts and 2 jars of different curry sauce and probably have change for rice....That's way too expensive and defo not a sharer.
When saying this is not a sharer there are 2 points you have missed: 1) the saturated fat is very high 2) once you add rice, naan etc to half of this it’s a good portion.
I totally love this range at ASDA. I'm not a hot curry guy and most of the dishes are quite spicy. But the flavour is so good I just battle through the pain🤣. I agree - this is a one-portion serving. The price is a bit dear, for sure. But the quality is there and I can tell you that in ASDA Grantham the Bombahia section of shelves are often quite bare - it's almost always sold out! At some point I wish ASDA would do a 3 for 2 offer on these.
I've had this. My reaction was - typical ready meal. Way too much sauce to the amount of chicken. Nothing like the amount we get from a takeaway. Will manufacturers of ready meals ever learn? But! Our hero will sleep soundly tonight! ☺️
I am beginning to think all these chicken curries have factory processed Frankenstein chicken plastic meat in them, and I love curries but not factory processed meat!!!
Looks too mild for me that. I've tried the beef madras which was excellent quality but nowhere near madras heat. Next time I got it I poked a tiny hole in the lid and slid in some chopped chillies , gave it a bit of ooooomph 🌶🌶🧻🧻🚾. In the same fridge section there's also a Chinese range called House Of Yum...the char sui pork and beef teriyaki are amazing, their garlic and ginger egg fried rice is great also
tried a few of this range and its been great, not tried the butter chicken though because i like it fairly hot,a little pricey, but weve all paid 3 or 4 quid for a load of rubbish in the past, for a quid or 2 more id rather have the quality cheers mate
Yeah all them meals gone up to £5 especially that mixed grill we get once a week now great Indian there lamb samosas and Bom bay gunpowder potatoes in the same range are great as well
£8 for a curry in an Indian restaurant? Maybe in the 80’s Gaz 😂 Slightly dearer nowadays. This still looks good for a fiver, not something I’d choose because I like a bit of burn 🔥 My wife would enjoy this one though. The best Indian food I’ve ever eaten is a place in Moffat 🏴 It’s the only Indian in the village and has been there years, proof it’s good because it’s a one horse town 😂 We’re off back up there for 2 night next week so we’ll be going out to there for wife’s birthday meal. Cheers for the review Gaz 👍🏼🇬🇧🇬🇧
You should try the ,Charlie Bingham’ chicken madras, best supermarket curry I’ve tasted by far! Not cheap but it does 2 and like you say, it’d be more expensive if you got it from a restaurant
I think it’s worth the extra money, there’s no comparison to the other ready meal curries. Mind you having said that, I’ve been lucky twice in the reduced section!
Great review Gareth, I had that the other week and enjoyed it and just what was required could have been a little hotter. But like you say it is not enough for two
I love this curry! It's my favourite. I know it's a bit on the expensive side but it's enough for me for two meals. In my humble opinion it's better than my local takeaway.
Butter chicken isn't meant to be spicy hot, that's why my wife loves it. Not all Indian food is spicy hot, much of it is quite mild especially the breakfast kind of stuff. It seems to be a British legacy from the 60s and 70s where it's a matter of how hot you can take it.
The main point is that on the packaging they put 2 chilis as the heat rating so they’re selling it as being medium-spicy & people will expect it to be if they buy based on the heat-rating. They should rate it at 1 like their kormas
I think its great and a very good price where i live in scotland curry rice and nan for 1is 20 pounds,if you go to the curry house 2 starters 2 curries 1 rice and a nan and 2 soft drinks is 74 pounds so its a bargain in my book i always buy it.
Ive only ever known them be £5. Still worth it for me especially the madras. Best curry youll find in any supermarket. The m&s best ever ones are more than a fiver. Unfortunately too many people dont want to pay for quality. They just want stuff cheaper. Still easily worth a fiver. Id rather they keep the quality the same and increase the price rather than make the product cheaper and ruin it.

I have had this and it’s very nice, but only as good as the Iceland luxury curries which are 3 for £10
Great review Gaz and it looked nice it’s just the price yet again but a few spices add could sort it of and keep up with the excellent reviews 👏👏👍👍
Cheers Peter 👍
Its pancake day today happy pancake day everyone
My pancake batter is in the resting stage atm lol
Have just eaten two, lovely
5 quid??? You can buy a real curry standalone from a restaurant for that money.
I've never eaten tandoori butter chicken. The ingredients look pretty good and clean though what the he'll is smoked water? 😅
If there was a random man down the pub and I was on my own, id hope it was you mate. So warm, kind and very fair. Great review
Glad you enjoyed it
I think the "per half pack" traffic light system is merely to make the product look healthier. Double them up & the row of red lights might be a bit offputting, but it obviously only serves one hungry boy.
Hi Gareth, It's a shame you buy some thing and it's not what you expect, it may be nice and ok but not up to the mark. A great honest review, take care👍
Cheers Shaun
I only buy these when they are in the reduced section, ive got them for £1.70 before.
I just had the king prawn bhuna curry from the Aldi hastro range. £3.89, and it was lovely.
Looked alright to me. Would be okay for two as a jacket potato topping… 👍…
Great suggestion. Thank you.
For mecand my partner £5 plus £1 for a bag of Uncle Bens or similar is a reasonable tea for £6. Defo wouldn't eat the whole lot ourselves and as you said it needs rice, popadoms etc 😊
Ingredients are spot on, but why Non UK chicken, have we run out in this country?....no I don't think so.
Yes this and the other are very nice but they have put the price up slowly since they came out . I only buy them when in the reduction zone .
For a child....
So good!
I've had this. My reaction was - typical ready meal. Way too much sauce to the amount of chicken. Nothing like the amount we get from a takeaway.
Will manufacturers of ready meals ever learn?
But!
Our hero will sleep soundly tonight! ☺️
Haha 👍
400g not too bad as it’s all curry . Some places sell with rice inc.uded in 420 g .
You can microwave Aldi ones in the container. I recommend the Jalfrezi loads of chicken
Gotta love a butter chicken. . Nice with a garlic naan
Could we see another cookery demonstration on making your own curry? Think it would make great content.😀
Will do
I am beginning to think all these chicken curries have factory processed Frankenstein chicken plastic meat in them, and I love curries but not factory processed meat!!!
A large 2 person main course from my local takeaway is £6.50. I know who got the better deal Gaz
& all the local cats keep disappearing…
Looks too mild for me that. I've tried the beef madras which was excellent quality but nowhere near madras heat. Next time I got it I poked a tiny hole in the lid and slid in some chopped chillies , gave it a bit of ooooomph 🌶🌶🧻🧻🚾. In the same fridge section there's also a Chinese range called House Of Yum...the char sui pork and beef teriyaki are amazing, their garlic and ginger egg fried rice is great also
I make everything myself from scratch unless a price reduction, and do not buy any takeaway fish and chips etc as far too expensive now ….
tried a few of this range and its been great, not tried the butter chicken though because i like it fairly hot,a little pricey, but weve all paid 3 or 4 quid for a load of rubbish in the past, for a quid or 2 more id rather have the quality cheers mate
I had the Madras. Although it was £5 you got quite a bit more than the Asda's own which are over 4 quid now!!!!
Hi Gareth! Happy Pancake Day😊😊😊
Could you tell me what Brand and make your microwave is…..I’m thinking I might like one?
Cheers lovely channel 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
Ask the best pal
I’m asking the best lol……the make of your microwave with the built in grill 😅???
A up G just brought these from Aldi ,crest wood 4 steak and graveyard pies well impressed you should try them you won’t be disappointed mate 3:24
Cheers
Yeah all them meals gone up to £5 especially that mixed grill we get once a week now great Indian there lamb samosas and Bom bay gunpowder potatoes in the same range are great as well
£8 for a curry in an Indian restaurant? Maybe in the 80’s Gaz 😂 Slightly dearer nowadays.
This still looks good for a fiver, not something I’d choose because I like a bit of burn 🔥
My wife would enjoy this one though.
The best Indian food I’ve ever eaten is a place in Moffat 🏴
It’s the only Indian in the village and has been there years, proof it’s good because it’s a one horse town 😂 We’re off back up there for 2 night next week so we’ll be going out to there for wife’s birthday meal.
Cheers for the review Gaz 👍🏼🇬🇧🇬🇧
Cheers Dan
Morrisons own curry range is worth a try. Can even reuse the cartons to put lots of crap in - craft stuff for the kids etc.
Love your videos Gareth, but I can only watch when I am eating 😅
You should try the ,Charlie Bingham’ chicken madras, best supermarket curry I’ve tasted by far! Not cheap but it does 2 and like you say, it’d be more expensive if you got it from a restaurant
I will check it out
As of late I have found ASDA dear and I deffo don’t want to eat meat from an unknown destination.
I think it’s worth the extra money, there’s no comparison to the other ready meal curries. Mind you having said that, I’ve been lucky twice in the reduced section!
Love your videos you make my day after coming home from work xx
Oh thank you! You're welcome 😊
Great review Gareth, I had that the other week and enjoyed it and just what was required could have been a little hotter. But like you say it is not enough for two
If i buy a curry from the supermarket and it's not hot enough,i just mix in some of my carolina reaper sauce in to it ! 😋
Cheers John
Looks ok Gareth but like you said getting on with the same price as a takeaway. Rather let them do the work mate 👍🏻👍🏻
Thanks 👍
Wondering what the best fast food take out you have in your area?
Depends what your into
I love the creamy butter chicken from Iceland, add a couple of Aldi's Garlic and Coriander naan breads and you're good to go!
A lot of money for a curry, I like doing mine Gareth, but to fill up you need rice, chips and a naan bread. Bet you won't buy it again xx
Cheers Nicola xx
butter chicken isn't spicy is it ?
Tried Bom Bahia rice with this and it’s delicious, but pricey but the rice is definitely enough for 2.
Yeah...they've always been a fiver in my neck of the woods.
