Roger Waters is so underrated. Rolling Stone didn't even put him in the top 100. Also where is John Fogerty?
3 of the 4 Beatles members in Top 30. Talking about the best band ever.
George still should’ve been higher
Ringo after reading this be like : "No more peace and love"
When it comes to music, Brian Wilson is the best. Dylan for lyrics and Lennon/McCartney for both.
Dylan’s lyrics far outshine L/M. Also I would argue melodys too. However, Dylan popularized writing lyrics, before Dylan, the Beatles were singing about 18 year old girls and holding their hands.
@@MidosujiSen Just the way he pronounces phrases and words, I feel like the lyrics and music tie together more than Lennon/McCartneys do
@@michaelwomack5769 I believe that that’s an oversimplification of the Beatles’ lyricism
@@noahsart6254 It’s just the plain story. Bob Dylan popularized the idea of writing your own songs, as well as having good lyrics.
@@michaelwomack5769 LOL absolutely not Bob has nowhere near the amount of great melodies as the Beatles. Not even close.
How can you not have Barry Gibb and Jeff Lynne on this list.
Exaclty
Yup
they always ignore barry gibb and his brothers all these years. They were great songwriters, both their music and lyrics are superb. Another one thats unbelievable is gilbert o sullivan, what a tune smith
Especially Lynn
ELO's never on any of this guy's lists. I think he's never heard of them, or he's crazy.
My top 10
1.John Lennon
2.Bob Dylan
3.Paul McCartney
4.Neil Young
5.Chuck Berry
6.Paul Simon
7.Roger Waters
8.Brian Wilson
9.David Bowie
10.Robert Plant
Mine would be along the same as you except that Paul would be my favorite then John then Bob
Ik this is about to be a controversial asf statement. But R Kelly is the best song writer ever. Just look up his body of work. He's at least top 5 and dude can't even read.
@@datname1939 I don't know him, but it sounds really amazing
There are actually a lot of amazing songwriter but underrated like Peter Hammill
@@aonlyandonlytheonlythatonl4247 he wrote a few of Michael Jackson's songs like 'you are not alone' and 'cry'. As well as 'I believe I can fly', 'I am your angel' Celine dion, 'the worlds greatest', 'fortunate', 'life', 'bump bump bump', 'busted, 'contagious ', 'i need an angel', 'I look to you' by Whitney Houston, 'if I could turn back the hands of time', 'step in the name of love' And the list goes on.
@@datname1939 Never knew this before
thanks for tell me
George Harrison needs to be higher
Where is Barry Gibb of the Bee Gees? Extremely underated artist
Sting, David Bowie and Robert Plant are some of my favorite song writers along with Lennon and McCartney
roger waters, brian wilson also
It was a good list, I liked how you included a bunch of different genres, I would’ve added Thom Yorke from Radiohead and Frank Ocean
A guy who wrote and sang - “Boh rhap”, “We are the champions”, “Somebody to love”, “Don’t stop me now” “Killer Queen”, “Crazy little thing called love”, “Love of my life” isn’t even in top 50...
I know how is that possible.
Killer Queen and Crazy Little Things Called Love aren't great songs. Bohemian Rhapsody is the one true masterpiece Mercury ever wrote.
Lightweight pop shite, that's why.
@@tyrannosauruszeppelin2205 I don't like crazy little thing called love too, but the other songs the guy mentioned are absolutely masterpieces, killer Queen too, he belongs for sure in the top 50
I think, john deacon was a better songwriter in that group
You should’ve put Hendrix or Freddie Mercury in this list
Hendrix is more of a guitarist than songwriter, I’m not saying he bad or anything but nobody thinks of him as a songwriter
Paul wrote and sung Here,There and Everywhere and Helter Skelter...
I think that is all you need to know he is the best.
Hey jude , yesterday , Eleanor Rigby , may be I am amazed , let it be and blackbird.
Keep on riding him.
No point knowing anything when its an objective fact that Bob Dylan literally shits on Paul McCartney in the songwriting department.
@@vanplq8841 Lol how many retarded takes are you gonna throw at me?
@@vanplq8841 But Paul McCartney is far better musician and singer than bob Dylan.
@@mostafamahmoud5524 Of course Paul McCartney is overall a more talented musician than Bob Dylan but this list ranks in terms of songwriting and as good as a musician Paul is, he is NOT a better lyricist than Bob Dylan, the songwriter of the millenium.
And where are Pete Townshend, Axl Rose, Barry Gibb, Mick Jagger, Noel Gallagner, Thom Yorke, Roger Waters, Freddie Mercury, Robert Plant and Jeff Lyne....??? They should be here definitely ...
Plus Elton John, Jackson Browne, Crosby Stills & Nash, Kate Bush, Carly Simon, Frey/Henley., Buffy Sainte-Marie...
instead there is taylor swift and maria carey 😂
How can this list not have Jackson Browne, Bob Seger, John Prine, Glenn Frey/Don Henley, Roger Waters/David Gilmour, Robert Plant/ Jimmy Page, Pete Townshend.
Sufjan Stevens.
Bro can make you weep with just a guitar, it’s crazy.
This is a great list! Yes, there are a lot of people that could easily fill in any of these spots, but the majority of these are on the mark for me.
1. Bob Dylan. He got even Nobel literature prize. Academy say there is not any songwriter, who could get that most prestigious prize.
McCartney was awarded by America president himself who can get more prestigious award than that. He also has Guinness records.
@@mostafamahmoud5524 Dylan got an award from the president also..
Let me remind you that songwriting is not only lyrics.
I appreciate Bob Dylan but McCartney is a whole other league. It's one thing what the critics say and a whole other thing what the majority of the listeners think. Commercially Paul is way ahead. In the US Lyrics are very important but world wide its important how melody and lyrics harmonize with each other. Paul is king of melody but not so good at lyrics. Dylan is the king of lyrics. In 100 years people will still listen to Paul's songs. I am afraid Dylan will slowly fade.
Your channel is so underrated
absolutely
Wait... Guys where's Freddie???
Freddie and the Dreamers weren't that good
@@tom_demarco Queen
In a bedroom with a guy.
You must be kidding
@@tom_demarco I'm talking about Queen you moron
What about Barry Gibb? Not just for The Bee Gees but loads of other artists too.
Pete Townshend. Almost all The Who songs + many solo works.
Agreed. He did not write that many "Hit Singles" per se, but his great songs have been played on album oriented radio forever. A big omission to be sure.
@@bowtieguy377 👍
anybody who wants good songwriting in this gen of music should listen to Taylor Swift's Albums not just her very famous singles but her incredible albums! especially folklore, Evermore, red, or speak now. There're so many hidden gems in her catalog u will not regret it
yesss she the only hope in today's big artist's music in my opinion
I regretted😢

@@Ok-tl1dvListen to "The lakes"," All too Well","Tolerate it" ,"This is me Trying" .
You probably just listen those more generic and commercial songs that tend to be singles....
I'm inspired by so many writers past and present, when I hear something great that Ive never heard before I usually freeze in my tracks, lol
Paul McCartney is the greatest songwriter of all time
I couldn't agree more
I like Paul at Number 1 over Dylan, I think 50 years from now McCartney will be recognized as the greatest music artist of all time
What about Roger Waters?
According to both McCartney and John Lennon themselves, they believed that the song Yesterday, 'was mediocre' at best. Which is surprising 'cause like, it used to be the most covered song in YT...
32 out of the top 50 most covered songs of all time are Beatles
@@waldorf9061 source
Most covered song of all time . Voted as song of the century in radio poll.
But only one of them received the Nobel price....So no doubt he is the best songwriter ever...Bob!
Ray Davies of The Kinks should be on the list
Thrilled to see Harry Chapin, but you should add John Prine, Jim Croce, John Denver, and Hayes Carll.
what abt freddie mercury?
Exactly guy wrote more hits than some of these guys combined!
Ikr
@@garrus7221 what is the argument? everyone in the top 10 made more hits than freddie
Taylor Swift😘😍❤
I think billie joe armstrong, jim morrison, bono/the edge and eminem deserve a spot in this list but anyway good list
I agree with Billie
Would agree if it wouldn’t have said Singer-songwriter. Eminem for example is my favourite songwriter but can’t sing at all
I agree with anyone but billie, good singer, decent song writer, but none of them are worrh mentioning in an all time list, maybe a 90's 2000's list, maybe
Rap is a completely different type of songwriting, they don’t have to worry about chords or melody, just lyrics, and Eminem lyrics are nothing even close to Mariah Carey’s lyrics
@@sherwintavarez8539 you need therapy😂😂
Joni should be higher
As others mentioned, where is Bono, Pete Townhsend, John Fogarty, and I will add 2 of my favorites, both wrote some incredible lyrics, Robbie Robertson of The Band, and Jim Morrison of The Doors.
Yeah many missing…Freddie Mercury and lyrically Mark Knopfler is up there with Dylan.
Kurt cobain,george harrison,lennon/McCartney,chris cornell.
sorry but its a bad list. where is mercuy, plant or morisson?
Yes, all three of those people were songwriters, but pretty much always wrote songs with their bands and the rest of their bandmates are credited on the songs. For example, Jim Morrison did not write songs using an instrument, and the other band members would contribute to his lyrics and melodies helping to form the actual song. Every individual on this list is a songwriter on their own, and had successful solo careers. Not trying to discredit Jim Morrison, Robert Plant, or Freddy Mercury whatsoever, it’s just not the type of songwriter this video is meant to portray.
Freddie Mercury's doesn't write particularly good songs
@@DaveBallOW He wrote a ton of good songs on the 70's, the 80's was pretty hit or miss
@@DaveBallOW what??? Bohemian rhapsody? Dont stop me now,it’s doesn’t have to be political or philosophical to be good,he was a incredible songwriter,he could easily be in the top 20 ,memorable songs with meaning ,many of them are sadly not that well known ,that’s why people only think of the mainstream stuff
Crap list if there’s no Barry Gibb!
How can you omit him? 🤷♂️
He wrote many hits, including 20 that reached # 1!
I agree with the top 3 but I would reorder it to being
3. Bob Dylan
2. Paul McCartney
1. John Lennon
I disagree strongly
Exactly! Lennon #1:)
@@Lu-em5wx can I guess Paul is your number 1
@@PunkMarioBros paul is better not the best of all Tim but better than lennon
@@Kevin-fj3ff it’s personal opinion and this is mine because I feel a link to John’s songwriting and how it has inspired me in a different way to Paul’s which is why I made this my top 3
But where is Jeff Lynne?
Taylor Swift, Mariah Carey, Madonna in the top 50..to laugh 😂😂😂
Thanks for at least putting him on but John Mayer’s got to be higher
You could put Freddie Mercury
Madonna LOL
Mariah Carey at 20 is CRAZY

2. Roger Waters
3.John Lennon
4.Bob Dylan
5.David Bowie
6.Brian Wilson
7. Steven Tyler
8.Freddie Mercury
9. Michael Jackson
10. Robert Plant
Stevie nicks, Lou reed, Joni Mitchell, bob Dylan, George harrison, David Bowie, John Lennon, Paul McCartney are one of my favorite songwriters of all time, but I don’t listen todays music only 60s 70s 80s and 90s with grunge rock, art and alternative rock😂
Paul Mc Cartney,,, Best Man,,,
You must be kidding making this list without Freddy Mercury, Roger Waters and so Manu others...and ranking George Harrison below Kurt Cobain and Madonna...
Sting was alright, but let's get real, Newcastle's finest has to be Alan hull (lindisfarne)..Even sumner would admit that.
I think it could be perfect without:
Mariah Carey, Taylor Swift and Madonna( out of 100);
Phil Collins, John Mayer,Otis Redding, Chris Cornell,Steven Tyler, Tracy Chapman, Gordon Lightfoot, Sting, Donald Fagen, Willie Nelson, all of them out of 50, but into 100 and replaced by:
Elton John
Graham Nash
Carly Simon
Emmylou Harris
Stephen Stills
Jackson Browne
Buffy Sainte-Marie
David Crosby
Carl Perkins
Robbie Robertson
Kate Bush
Jagger/Richards
Frey/Henley.
*WHERE IS JIM MORRISON ????*
Morrissey should be here even though he is Morrissey
I'm sorry but how is Axl rose not on this?! Man literally wrote the greatest rock ballot in history (novmeber rain) and estranged they're so relatable!
That would be Stairway to Heaven
Since john lennon write imagine hes number 1 for me
Paul McCartney is the greatest of all time.
Bob Gaudio? Barry Gibb? John Fogherty? Burt Bacharach? Pete Townsend? Keith Richards and Mick Jagger? Also, I love Johnny Cash, but I think a good amount of his hits were penned by other people.
Re Burt B…I think Hal David wrote most of lyrics.
How is Noel Gallagher not there writing songs like wonderwall, don’t look back in anger, live forever and countless more
He maybe top 150
Jeff lynne???
Taylor Swift 💀💀💀💀
i think this kind of videos should say "Greates singer songwriters of all time IN ENGLISH" the world is gigantic, for example in spanish there are a lot of better than most of your list
Agree.
I am from Brazil, and we have amazing singers/ songwriters as Raul Seixas, Renato Russo, Cazuza.
If Renato Russo doesn't decide only write his lyrics in Portuguese he could reach internacional sucess.
A true genius. Saddly he died so young.
Cerati está entre los mejores.
Finally some respect for harry chapin
As turning 19 next month I love the Beatles so much
just saying, Micheal Jackson and Madonna had a lot of help to be some of the best songwriters of all time. i feel like this is a fair point to make when you're talking about members of bands and their writing.
I'm surprised to see Michael Jackson here, the song you used is "beat it" from the album Thriller, an album of 9 songs, where MJ only wrote 4!
I grew up in the 60s and 70s pop/rock scene, so appreciate Dylan, Wilson, McCartney etc. But I also realize Irving Berlin was more influential than most on this list, with only a couple exceptions.
This was a nice attempt at a list of "All Time" and is fair in many respects. However, any such list is of course, subjective in terms of inclusion and rankings. However, the list contains some real flaws just in my opinion. First, there are artists on there from today like Taylor Swift. However talented she is, her songs have not stood the test of time yet, through no fault of her own and it remains to be seen if her songs will still be played 50 years from now across multiple generations. She may ultimately be well embedded into the list down the road but now is not the time. and she is not the only one. Then, there are others like Mariah Carey and Madonna, who most or all of their big hit songs that they supposedly "wrote", were written with multiple songwriter partners, which I think disqualifies them from this type of "Songwriter" list. They may have literally just written a few lines of lyrics to these songs, which is often the case. Also, there are some individuals like Lou Reed, that did not leave behind a body of work that was truly memorable to the full general public, other than 1 or 2 songs, despite their share of output The problem with all this is that this leaves off the list full songwriters who did meet the criteria I have tried to describe. To name just a few of these, think of Jim Croce, John Denver, Ray Davies, John Fogarty, Roger Waters, Pete Townsend, Eric Clapton etc. Whether or not you like these omissions and others not mentioned personally, they do meet some real criteria as I have outlined.
Where is John Mellencamp, Steve Earle, John Fogerty and John Prine
What about Tim Buckley?! I'm so surprised!
WFH!!!!
Where is NICK CAVE???
Any list of great singers/songwriters in incomplet without Nick Cave, from Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds.
This guy is a genius!!!
By the way, Leonard Cohen deserved a better position on that list.
Nick is in 40
My mom loves him
@@SaharMaorLevyIt is Nick CAVE, not Nick Drake.
@@charlotteholmes3056 Oh shit
But my mom loved Nick Cave a lot
Did I miss Jackson Browne ?. One of the finest contemporary American singer songwriters.
There are a number of things wrong with this list, realising this is wholly subjective. For instance, Carol Kings' best compositions were written latterly with Tom Stern or as songwriting team with Goffin and Wexler.
If you include King, then John/ Taupin and Jagger/Richards should be in there also.
I'm not sure Madonna wholly wrote her songs either. If Taylor Swift is included as a current phenomenon, then how do you discount Ed Sheerhan.
In my humble opinion, the finest singer songwriters in the trueist tradition are Dylan, Mitchell, Paul Simon, NeilYoung, Jackson Browne, and Van Morrison. With acknowledgements to McCartney and Lennon, Brian Wilson, Springsteen, Bowie, Prince, and stevie Wonder.
I'm sure I've missed a few, and people will disagree.
Paul McCartney is clearly #1.
And what about Michael Stipe?
Wheres Townsend and Daltrey?
Unfortunately the English speaking world is so limited. Have you ever heard e.g. of Ludwig Hirsch (Austria) or Fabrizio DeAndre (Italy)?
Taylor swift...but no Freddie Mercury...😢
I know it's hard to put together such a list, but this seems too personal, i mean taylor swift is here and freddy mercury isn't?
Ikr
Taylor deserve to be here. She's in the top ten for me. Madonna should not be in this list.
@@asvjthat's just your terrible taste, doesn't mean she deserves to be here
I think that Damon and Noel deserve a spot on this list Noel is an immaculate songwriter and Damon is Damon.
wtf, prince better than George Harrison?
And it misses the best country singer, Glen campbell...
Yes I have to agree with that. Prince was a better guitarist, a multi-instrumentalist and better vocalist. He has more hits himself as well and great songs but thats partly because he was always a solo artist and became famous that way. If George got to write as much as John and Paul then perhaps we'd be having a different discussion.
@lzeb4730 ability at playing an instrument shouldn't really matter much should it? Lennon was pretty basic on guitar and piano also. There's others that weren't great instrumentalists on this list too. Its about writing songs that is what matters
Yes sir. A LOT better in fact, if you just stopped underestimating him because he likes fashion and doesn't look simple and actually listen to some of his stuff you'd notice it.
I had no idea Madonna wrote her own songs. But even if she did then surely not that high! Not top 200 even. But its probably a case of her giving songwriters more money for her taking the credit. Sorry but i just cant beleive shes a songwriter.
As for the others. Well its all subjective. I didnt see Elton in there and theres so many more that could have been included.
For me Thom Yorke is one of the greats. He would be high on my list.
Madonna actually a great songwriter if you don’t mind check her 90s albums, her songwriting is unique when it comes to female artists especially from Erotica to American Life era and it contributes to other female artists in succeeding generations, maybe you only overheard her overplayed singles that is not much good enough for songwriting. However, I think she did not deserve to be that high compared to others like Mitchell or Carole for female, those are better writers. Check the catalogue of artists before judging, if you do not like it, then this is subjective depending on a person taste.
Finally Madonna!!! YAS I love her.
WHAT ABOUT ELTON JOHN? BARRY GIBB? JIM CROCE? NEIL YOUNG? GLEN FREY? DON HENLEY?
Jim Croce and Neil Young was on the list.
Elton didn’t write lyrics.
Thom yorke?
No Patti Smith? Janis Joplin, also maybe somewhat unpopular opinion but if John Mayer is here I think so should Justin Vernon
Neil Young 21, Madonna 10 ….be serious. The only one that can compete with Neil is Bob
Paul wrote more songs because he had 41 more years to do it And counting. Johns work is more creative Paul wrote for his audience and I thank him for that John wrote for himself and that shows more courage I like Paul more than John, but John was the bigger talent
1. David Bowie
2. Paul McCartney
3. Prince
That's a Solid list. I personally would change the sequence nonetheless
Brian Wilson should be in top 3
I definitely think Damon Albarn deserved a spot on this list.

2.Bob Dylan
1.John Lennon
Ann Wilson.
