    Been enjoying the posting of the Dragnet videos. Jack Webb was a great actor to be sure and its a treasure to be able to watch these old classics. Thank you!!!

      i know right? it seems they were improving that take and Webb legitimately cracked up and he just decided to keep it in. it's very interesting to see him like that

      Yes, he was genuinely laughing, it was great. It humanized him when Joe had those moments listening to Franks crazy theories.

    Interesting, the radio version of this explains that he wanted to escape his mother who wouldn't let him be his own man. Saying that if he killed his persona, she would finally leave him alone. She comes to the station to verify it's her boy, they argue and he stands up for himself. She smothers him into leaving with him and he's back to the life he was trying to escape.

      Oh yeah, you’re right. This was slightly different than the radio version. This had Franks funny “ theories” and took place late at night. It didn’t have as much detail regarding the boys mothers either. I listen to the radio versions at night to fall asleep to and just listened to this a few nights ago ( Frank was also played by another actor and wasn’t as funny even when telling a story about Fay).

    Always enjoyed Alexander's character. His character was more easy going then Webb's uptight portrayal of Joe Friday. Enjoyed the small talk and bantering between them while cracking a case.

    Adam, thanks for this episode. It's really great to see the old show once again. I'm old enough to just barely remember the old Dragnet when it aired. Being only 4 or 5 at the time, it was the music that always caught my attention. At that age, the plots were a bit over my head. I do remember seeing Ben from many episodes and liked his acting.

      We have plenty of uncirculated episodes but they will not be shared. These episodes cost money and are not to be given away for free. (Ever again). As a result of this video being shared it ended up on both an "archive" site and a Roku station.

    I have a question--I really love the old shows but I feel the acting is different from what it is now...do you think it’s just different or was the acting bad? Thanks Adam

    • @artmoss6889
      @artmoss6889 2 года назад +2

      I agree that the acting in this show is not like the acting in modern prograns. One of the reasons has to do with Jack Webb's acting style which is terse, understated, and under inflected. Webb insisted that the other actors in the show emulate this plain-spoken style. In addition, Webb produced these shows with very little rehearsal and with the expectation that all scenes would be filmed in one take. In addition, the actors didn't perform in dialogue style. Rather, actors would recite all their lines at one time, and then they would edit things together to make it appear that the characters were talking to each other. This resulted in acting style some have called superficial, one that didn't allow for much complexity or emotional depth, or as Joe Friday might say, "Just the facts."

    Can you please tell me where you obtained this episode? I know the person who bought the source film and I was the one who made the telecine transfer. This was at a tremendous cost and you posting it before we could at least break even on the investment was not in the best interest of people like us who search the world for uncirculated episodes of Dragnet from the 1950's. We have quite a few more but will not share them if they will be irresponsibly tossed up on RUclips after we pay a very high price for them. Because they are in the public domain you are legally allowed to upload them. At the same time, you are holding up other uncirculated episodes from being shared with the Dragnet community. The Facebook group is over 3000 strong and they deserve to see these episodes.

      I originally offered my email address but it's clear you don't want to discuss this. Fair enough. This came from a DVD I purchased, I waited about 2 years after it was first offered and when the DVD was no longer being offered to share this. While I do appreciate that some exclusive period of time is appropriate on these newly discovered disks I don't think "Forever" or "For an Indefinite period" is an appropriate length of time for such an exclusive claim for something that's in the public domain and really should be available for everyone.

      Sorry, I missed your message. I would be happy to correspond via your email address or talk with you directly. I'm not sure where you contacted me, however, get hundreds of emails per day and don't have my RUclips content sent to and address that I check on a regular basis. I will gladly start looking. You can start by telling me where you bought the disc. I have a feeling I know where you got it.

      I feel that this is an inappropriate forum for anyone to bring up business. Also, I bought a set of Dragnet about two years ago from Amazon. How can you think that anyone knew what you were trying to do? Great Detective of Old Time Radio is merely trying to do his thing. I am sure they didn't know that you had plans with your set of videos. To attack someone like that at a public forum is out of line. May you should do more research to find out who else is putting Dragnet on RUclips. As a matter of fact maybe you want to ask all the other folks uploading Dragnet to cease and desist because you have plans with your set of Dragnet films.
