Just a reminder since clearly some of yall need it; 'gay camps' isn't a fun little place to get a girlfriend/boyfriend. It's an abusive and dehumanizing place where you go through horrible things to 'fix' you. People don't leave these camps with a boyfriend, they leave with trauma.
This is true, although some parents also send their kids to general church camp (vs "conversion" camps) in the hopes that all that Christianness will do it, and that's more of where the "I had gay sex at church camp" narrative comes from. Those can still be pretty F'd up but they're less traumatic than the conversion therapy camps.

I have this dream of running a "conversion Christian camp" but in reality it's just a camp where gay kids parents send them too thinking they'll be "fixed". We'd have s'mores, crafts, and healthy therapy to learn how to love yourself the way you are. At the end of the camp we'd send the kids home with a boost of moral and hope for when they are grown, so that they can leave those bigoted households and have an actual loving home! Basically the underground railway but for gay "fixing" camps.
Or with PTSD from the gruelling methods they use in conversion therapy. Some use ice cold baths, electroshock therapy and correction rapes and beatings to try and “cure” them. Many lie and say the therapy worked to be spared of the methods

In fact, I would love if there were more cult/trauma deprogramming resources specific to LGBTQ+ survivors of hyper-religious environments. I have this dream of running a "conversion Christian camp" but in reality it's just a camp where gay kids parents send them too thinking they'll be "fixed". We'd have s'mores, crafts, and healthy therapy to learn how to love yourself the way you are. At the end of the camp we'd send the kids home with a boost of moral and hope for when they are grown, so that they can leave those bigoted households and have an actual loving home!

In fact, I would love if there were more cult/trauma deprogramming resources specific to LGBTQ+ survivors of hyper-religious environments.
Most times, it's enough of a struggle to even get people to acknowledge that any particular hyper-religious sect is a deviation from more acceptable forms of the same religion, or that certain "religions" are, in fact, cults on the whole. Let alone accessing healing resources or even finding any.
