I love the idea of THOCKTOBER
Thock wasn't part of my vocabulary a week ago, and now I'm looking down at my keyboard and feeling disgusted by the lack of thock as I type this message.
If you don't wanna do too much work or modding and just want a super nice keyboard to type on, I recommend the Leopold. Just got mine a week ago and now typing is a dream.
didnt expect you here
Seeshhh😂😂😂
in the last week...i've dug myself so deep into this hobby, its not even funny 😂
Welcome to this rabbit hole of a hobby😂
I'm a sound scientist but not a thoccologist. I think plastic cases may sound "deeper" because the material is softer, more pourous, and likely thinner than metal, meaning they would tend to absorb higher frequency sounds better and leave the lower, more thocky sounds behind. I suspect there might also be something interesting in the types of sound produced when you type, based on plastic having more elasticity, but also being more uniform, whereas metal is more likely to be rolled/formed in such a way that one direction has more give than the other. (Though don't take my word for it, I'm a phonetician so my knowledge/skillset is more fleshy, but the general acoustic properties and vibration are the same!).
ps: "Semantic satiation" is the reason thocc no longer sounds like a word. :)
This all sounds correct to me. You are right in how metal is formed. I come from the car world as a hobby and forged wheels verse gravity cast wheels are a big thing. Cheap cast wheels are made by pouring aluminum into a mold. The grain structure is crazy and all over the place. In a grav cast the mold is spun so that the grain structure is all going on way and has a uniform structure (in a circular pattern from the center)
Forged, in basic terms, is when they take a solid piece of aluminum, and cut it out into the shape of the mold. (all grain facing one direction and the grain ends at the cut outs verse flowing around the cut outs like a grav cast mold.
All this would change sound profile as well the cheaper stuff would have different sounds across the same board while the grav cast and forged would be more uniform in sound.

Sound engineer here
I think the best Thock would be a wooden keyboard body
Cause thats whats used in speakers/subwoofers as well
Cause wood resonates better with low frequencies
And plastic with mid and metal with high frequencies
So basically a wooden keyboard body with foam inside it and a little hollow space would be the best THOCC
SO PLEASE TRY IT OUT!!
I second this! Source: I own a wooden keyboard! Even with the steel plate on it, it sounds much deeper than any other keyboard I've used, and its got linears XD. Has a very nice feel as well, weighty without being heavy, and it smelled nice when I opened the package.
@@decameter Freshly varnished wood is the best

I just imagine some company eventually selling "keyboard amplifiers" that looks like some sort of like a guitar.
@@Currywurst-zo8oo duuuuude nice brain
Sound scientist here. Its about reflectivity and energy absorption. Plastic is a softer material than metal, so it can micro flex and disperse the vibrational energy, that is sound, better than something solid . Metal would just reverberate and bounce any vibrational energy off of its surface and back into the world (or back into your keyboard case over and over and over)
sounditist
Random idea: instead of foam, how about using butyl rubber? Like dynamat, the one used to soundproof old cars and sound systems. Butyl rubber can be bought on autozone as a tape putty since it's also used as a windshield sealant.
I know some people who modify their closed back headphones with butyl on the frame to reduce harmonics and whatnot
@@TheDonCucaracho Car dampening will work. I believe Keybored made a video using the material as case dampening.

Plastics like ABS, PC, and acrylics have a lower elastic modulus than metals like steels, brass, or aluminum.
A good way to think of it is that sound waves interact with a keyboard case in a similar way that switches bottom. If you’re using a brass/aluminum plate you have a much stiffer typing experience than something like PC. The sound waves essentially reflect back off of the aluminum “stronger” which means there is no resonance lost in the case, like there is in plastic.
The density of abs is so much lower than the density of aluminum that there is a substantial difference in the frequency and therefore pitch.
(I’m not a sound scientist yet, Mechanical engineering student)
Mechanical engineer here, you are correct. The sound is directly related to the natural frequency and excitation frequency of an object. Think of tapping a steel plate with your finger nail versus finger tip. Same natural frequency of steel, different excitation, different sound. This exactly what is happening when you have different plate materials, stem sizes etc, you are changing the natural and excitation frequencies. So the thud your finger makes is because it's softer and has a lower impulse, and the change in momentum takes longer versus your nail. This is why very stiff aluminum plates can be harsh and clacky while pc plates with flex cuts will be opposite. Now as a mechanical engineer, my work stops at vibrations of systems and materials. The way sound waves propagate and interact, and how they can be filtered, is a whole other subject, and I'll leave that to the audiologists :) Best of luck with your studies!

More rigid materials vibrate faster because they do not flex as much when a vibration moves through them. The faster something vibrates, the higher a sound it makes. Think about foam swords that thop when they clash together, plastic swords that clack, and metal swords that ring.
Sweet, so much better now, sounds great, I love it. Congrats!
I didn't know how much I needed the thocc until I started watching your vids. I always assumed thocc just meant that sweet deep sound, it's an onomatopoeia.
This right here is the sound. I typed on a keyboard like this ages ago when I was in school and haven't discovered what made that keyboard so special until I stumbled onto these niz/topre EC keyboards. I'm buying a niz after I leave this comment.
I adore your keycap set. Wish I’d have been researching this when it was available ha!
I really prefer these kinds of modding videos, it's a lot more interesting to watch
I got the Niz Plumb x87 because of you and I absolutely love it.
Is it too big for gaming I was wondering of getting that one or the 75% version and I'm still debating thank you!
The sound is best described as a soft and low pitched sound that is quieter than the typical loud snapping sound created by some mechanical keyboards. Thock is commonly sought after for keys that are larger than 1U, such as the Space Bar, Shift, and Enter keys
I'm a Topre user happily typing on a Novatouch, glad to hear that you're interested!
Unfortunately, Cooler Master canceled the Novatouch, but there are some good options out there - although unless you harvest the Novatouch sliders or buy after-market sliders and stabilizers, keycap customization is most likely not feasible unless you get a Realforce RGB (which doesn't have options smaller than TKL).
But as for keyboards that I'd recommend: there's either the HHKB - a 60% keyboard, or there's the Leopold FC660C - a 65% keyboard. Topre gets more tactile the heavier the dome weighting is, but the 45g domes have that sweet spot (well, as far as stock domes go) between having good tactility and not being stiff as fuck like the 55g domes (since I've also typed on a 55g Realforce keyboard before).
My favorite Novatouch (with Hypersphere rings mod and lubed stabs) got funky after 7 years of daily usage (randomly loosing USB connection, typing stuff in repeat when this happens, I've dusted it off regularly but no luck). So I bought a new keyboard. Cannot quickly obtain a new Topre board here so I got Keychron Q3 with Gateron Brown switches (pre-lubed) and with an intention to get Boba U4 later. Imagine my surprise-it feels more tactile and way, way more snappy! No mushy feeling. I can type much faster than on Novatouch easily scoring around 110 WPM instead of around 90. The difference is especially noticeable when I need to repeat the key press... The stabilizers are way better (even the spacebar has no rattle, my Novatouch is junk in comparison despite lubing the stabs). The touch is actually pretty good (of course, when pressed very slow on one of these Gateron Brown switches and at an odd angle it's not as perfectly smooth as the Topre's rubber dome, but when typing quickly I don't feel any scratchiness except perhaps the modifier keys-I guess I need to try good linear switches for them). The sound-no deep Topre's thock, but after the force break and tape mods it sounds "marbly" and I like it! The spacebar is way better (even though I didn't lube the stabs yet). So instead of trying Boba U4 (silent ones) I've decided to try U4T (regular ones which are more tactile). Overall I'm pretty happy with the purchase already. Wish I had experimented with other mechanical keyboards earlier, I was wrongly assuming my Novatouch was the end game.
Love the Niz Plum line. They feel and sound so good even if you’re not ready to start modding. Plus they have different sizes which is great for me because I like having a full size keyboard for work, and I feel like a lot of companies don’t make full size. The stabs are frustrating to deal with though if you want to change keycaps :(
No ISO layout options though.
@@tams805 Tbf, I think ISO layout is a whole nother line of minorities
i love those turquoise green keycaps! i wish they had the clear letter/symbol stuff for RGB to shine through though.

Ah yes i love thock , it’s so great and astonishing and makes me wanna buy a keyboard… and lube…. But then i remember , i’m broke :D

Nice video. Niz Plum is what I always return to as well. If I dont type it for a few days, I miss it.
I been using an HHKB for a while now and its honestly my fav board, the switches are on another level, Taeha calls topre endgame haha
Yes get hhkb
LOL 😂😂😂 that intro was the BEST! 😂 Love the content Hipyo :)
Thanks for the video! I actually like membrane keyboards than any other one, since I use my notebook keyboard so long and get used to it. And I like 1990s keyboard aesthetic, so I enjoyed this.
Cool video you've done it again hipyo!
I’m gonna do this one day, THE FINAL SOUND OF THE KEYBOARD IS WHAT I BEEN LOOKING FOR
The NIZ Plum micro 84 is the best kb I have ever used. It really is like typing on clouds. (Plastic case is no problem, the spacebar is ok too.)
I have no ideal why, but can confirm plastic cases & plates are indeed the cheat code for deeper sound. Also yes Topre is where thocc came from.
This satified my thock needs, thank you!
Topre master race!!! I use a Realforce with Topre 55g as my daily driver at work... seriously the best stock board you can buy imo!
Those NiZ Plum keycaps are fooking NOICE.
Omg so thoccy!! I luv it
cool build man, is it possible to install a blocker to make it like the duo82? also wondering if you can comment on 2019 vs 2021 switches. anxious to buy the new model.
Nice one. I got a niz plum myself and I wouldn't change it :)
Is the keyboard too big for gaming I was wondering of getting the 75% version or getting the x87 one Thanks!
thank you so much thock goober, youve changed the live of me and especially my friends.
I certainly didn't go for thock. Considering I went for an Aluminum case and brass plate haha. xD I like the sharp clean TAP, IDK it feels nice. And makes me happy.
Loved the video.... personally I feel like an acrylic board, polycarb plate, plus boba u4ts would instantly have more thock.
Fc660c low noise, but i havent tried replacing the silencing rings with any other aftermarket ones, sound amazing with lube, but is a little fatiguing to type with my right hand (non dominant hand)
Also is made of plastic and it got those smooth thocks
Well edited good job
as someone who uses the word "thock" very differently from how you do the intro was so much funnier than it was ever meant to be
Know how sometimes you like a RUclipsr and then you watch them stream and their personality makes you dislike them and ruins all of their other content? Hipyo did the literal opposite of that. He managed to make me like him much more when I watched him stream, and now all of his content gets +1 wholesome and +1 kindness points.
Niz plum and hansung are the same thing. I have a modded deskeys hansung, and it feels amazing. No costar stabs also

Somehow missed this video and I'm only just now watching it 3 months later
As a Niz Plum 87 user myself it's super validating to hear that you are also a fan of those boards, I'm so sorry about the plate warp because otherwise this thing also looks like my end game
It's been said a lot in the comments section already and whilst I'm not a sound scientist I am a trained audio engineer and 100% plastic is "thoccier" because of it's more flexible/softer nature than metal. Wood would likely be even thoccier and it would be cool to see keyboard enthusiest/designers start looking into the designs of say bass instruments as to how they produce deeper sounds
Good job man
this was a very nice *deep* video
The rick and morty part got me, I'm subbed now.
$220 for that?!? Holy crap, I think I’m gonna bail on this hobby before I even get started. Honestly sounds like that’s the best course of action at this point. You can keep your “thock”, and I’ll go with off the shelf mechanical keyboards.
The real definition of a CUSTOM keyboard
Hipyo you got me into keyboards and I built a budget keyboard about a year ago and it’s ok but I’m buying a keychron v2 and I’m going to keep it stick and eventually replace keycaps and switches
I'm so hyped
I like the colors of the keycaps, it's like the colors of my room
BUT I DON'T HAVE MONEY EVEN TO BUY A BUDGET KEYBOARD 😅

I'm into mechanical keyboards since I got a KM-G12 with red Aukey switches for 23€ on sale on Aliexpress. Probably not the best MK out there but as first MK (and with that price) it's very nice.
The ANSI layout is not always available (not a problem for me since I needed one of the ISO layout).
Now I'm trying to improve it without spending too much, with some neoprene foam to fill the case, and o-rings. Maybe I will try lubing switches without desoldering in the future.
@@lylluzzos :o
ive got a stock razer keyboard with optical linear switches that has a really surprising amount of thocc for almost every key
How have you not tried topre yet?!?? HHKB is what got me into the hobby almost 10 years ago now haha. I still own mine from 2010 it’s amazing and actually starts sounding and feeling better with age. I’d say go for a used hhkb pro 2
Why is your voice so well fit for this
For topres, realforces may be nice but the HHKB is truly an outstanding piece of overengineered plastic. I would think they are the quintessential topres to review before exploring the others :)
Just don't 205g0 the slider housings and you'll probably be good. They are slightly too thick for the slider housings and it's kinda easy to overlube with them. 3204 would have been a safer option.
This is going to be great
Sound engineer here :
the reason why plastic is thockier than metal is due to how sounds resonates on the materials along with their natural frequencies, the denser the object the more it can resonate with higher frequencies but since switches are lower frequencies they tend to thock less compared to a material that resonates more with lower frequencies, basically since plastic molecules are less dense than metal molecules the sound resonation would be more spacious compared to a metal, if you would like to achieve maximum thock then i would suggest wood since their acoustic reflection is the best compared to those two (hence why "acoustic" instruments are mostly made out of wood due to the echoic sound chamber that wood produces, more tonal and natural), but i'm not really a sound engineer and i have no idea what im saying so maybe im right or wrong who knows thank you and bye
@I have EXACTLY 0 Subs! frr
And 5hrs later, it's 3am and I'm still watching your videos... loathing my current keyboard.
if you ask me thock would be a deep sound that does not sound mushy (?). When you press the key it should sound as deep as possible but you should be able to hear when it is fully pressed. Almost sounding like the key cap has hit the surface of the keyboard and gives off a little bit of like a 'tackk' vibe. (tackk as in that's what the sound would sound like idk i dont do sounds for a living)
basically you dont want it to sound soft, you want a hard/concrete sound that's also as deep as possible. SO, i would say that the best material for thock is wood (but idk about wooden keycaps i think that's pushing it a little) because that just makes sense in my head as its a soft sounding hard surface or something
Hipyo should really try the leopold fc660c, I think he'll like the topre switches and the form factor.
I would love to see you testing the logitech keyboards the G915/G815 & the PRO with their own switches
THIS IS GONNA BE SICKKKK
I am really excited for this video!
I don’t game and I use my laptop’s key board. But I’m still enjoying this content. Dude’s got skills.
what makes plastic deeper sounding is beacuse it’s flexible that’s why poly carb plates are deeper it allows flex, when you jiggle and move around an aluminum sheet it has a higher pitch noise then when you move around a piece of plexiglass it has a “wowo” sound as opposed to the “tni tni” sound
It will be my dream if this keyboard had a production by Niz.
Truly awesome effort. I too think plastic = THOCKIEST
Currenly using a NIZ TKL that still requires some modding. But I do really enjoy the sound and feel of the switches. Took some getting used to the standard 35g ones though.
It's easy to replace the mats with stiffer domes if you ever want to do that in the future.
You made a hypothesis and tested it; you are definitely a sound scientist
i got my first mech keyboard today. Its just a random one off amazon for 40 Euros.I plan on lubing the switches even though they are garbage but i dont have any more money to spend on a costom one.Its loud but its a start.I hope they dont need a sodering iron to remove the switches
Why did you start with the Micro84 instead of the Micro82? I've never actually had a keyboard without costar stabs but I've greased mine up quite a bit which helped. I've had my Micro82 for a few years now and it's been good, but I've noticed on a couple of keys I seem to have spring rattle. Have you ever noticed this with yours?
I have built 2 keyboards so far this year because of you thank you so much for getting me into this very expensive almost waste of money hobby lmao

I classify thock as deep, smooth sound
I dare you to make a thocc typewriter
I remember thock always being used to describe topre boards. I find it slightly confusing with a lot of videos describing regular mechanical switches as thocc. all i hear is clack
Could you make a keyboard with a numpad on the left, its better for ergonomics. I haven't made a custom keyboard yet but want to and love these videos!
I like high pitch and quiet methinks
Toby probably had some power tool already in his car ready to go at 9pm when you called
fucked up on getting a metal keyboard but all good got a deep marble pop, sounds mint
You gotta get a Norbauer case if you like EC. It's the end game of all end games.
Swap the Domes. BKE Redux domes for Topre and Topre clones. If you want to make even more Thock. Ultra-Light Domes have the same tactility as 55g genuine Topre domes, while being 15g lighter, and the Light BKE Domes are even more tactile than 55g Topre, while being 5g lighter. Heavy Domes are like MX Blacks in weight but having a significant amount of tactility.(Think more than - Boba switches, Box Royals, or Sunflowers.)
Only downside to BKE Domes is that you need to get a Plum87, RC930, Genuine Topre Electronics, or just make sure your board has absolutely zero RGB. Sometimes you gotta do some cutting for the domes.
Nice video ☺️
Hippyo, did you keep this one or move to the Micro 82 (that honestly likely was released in part because of your video)?
We need some sound engineer to profile what a thocc sounds like.
I love how he was trying to make a deeper sound and ended up making the original definition of thock
An ex colleague of mine has a Topre. The switch is really weird, somewhat heavy, nothing like a regular mechanical feel.
Ahhh thock we love to see it
Why plastic/acrylic is more thocky.
It doesn't vibrate as much as metal, so the frequency of the vibrations is much lower (if it exists at all). It's like a sponge, rather than bounce sound back like metal it diffuses it throughout the chassis (i think).
