- Today we have the one and only René Rebe on the show, the developer of T2 SDE one of the very few standalone distros that is severely under represented in the media alongside running 2 youtube channels, Code Therapy and Bits inside

Herr Rebe is THE man who inspired me so start hacking PS3 (and start a RUclips), He has more or less shaped the direction of the past 2 years or so of my life... Great interview, Brodie 🙂
I may have to react to this video later if that's cool....
LOL
@@PauloConstantino167 what is so funny ?

OMG René! This is a pleasant surprise. Dude is awesome.
Because most people simply don't get what Rene achieved. Maybe Gentoo and Linux from scratch people can grasp and price this.
One of my favorite great-ranters!
Since you feature him, your deserve a comment for algo--also got my subscription.
Really happy to see René here!
Don't delay, try T2 SDE Linux today!
he is one of them, one the linux gods that allows us mortals to just install it on a computer and enjoy it
High props and respect for bringing Rene!!! 💪
It is true keyborad wizard! I watch his streams with awe always, i propose it for every one as a humbling experience.
OK, Brodie. You get HUGE respect for having Rene' on here. DEFINITELY one of the most underrated devs out there. Respect due to him.
I wish there where 5 renes working on T2 full time.
And another working on NetBSD, another working on OpenBSD, and yet another working on ELKS and FUZIX for retro PCs and modern-retro boards
i have a a feeling they would be arguing with each other / ranting with each other the entire time.
Bring him back for a part 2
I watch this Rene guy a lot, so i had to click here to watch this =D
Love that SGI machine in the background!
He's so right though, like on gnome pdf viewer prints, but only black text gets printed properly. On dolphin webdav is broken in almost every way, I can't click on folders, I can't copy paste into folders, etc. Funny thing is im sure (and for gnome pdf I know) these features worked at some point, but probably some code cleanup broke them.
didnt know linux-2 existed with support obscure playstation 3's and what not, learned alot I think got to do it again! 😀
If you use a Discord voice channel instead of a direct call, you can manually set it's server region. Meeting somewhere in the middle might improve the latency a bit.
I'll consider that next time
i absolutely love rene rebe, incredible developer
If it's possible to get T2 running in a container, that would be cool. It could be used in CI easily to do cross-compilation!
yes, of course, just exact it in a container, chroot or VM ;-)
@@MoreReneRebe Thanks René! Yes I am doing that :D I should have been more clear, if it would be possible to get T2 available as a prebuilt container image that would likely increase adoption because so many devs are struggling with awful CI environments
bloddy legend
Indeed!!!
one week later, T2 is renamed.... now is called T3! (including the exclamation mark :D )
this dude is god tier
Hoping Rene joins Jeremy Soller in developing the Redux kernel
Donate to T2 Linux and maybe try it out
Probably one of the few distributions I haven't tried. Gonna have to fix that.
no media coverage for T2 SDE? the name does't help... :(
It happened! Yay!
I was thinking about making a Gentoo based image for my RISC-V device, but actively supporting cross compiling definitely has me interested in T2. Not excited about dealing with SysV init though I could probably replace it with OpenRC.
Honestly though, SysV init is not _that_ bad lol
The naming in the kernel isn’t consistent anyways.
Wish he did work on AMD drivers though almost, need more people like him. AMD drivers have some weird bugs with GPU compute and video decode. Let's just say I have had more than five GPU resets
@MoreReneRebe you need an upstreamer for your fixes ;)
the only problem I had with T2 linux was making the Desktop Window manager working out of the box.
I was not able to get a GUI running myself. :(
How does it compare to Buildroot and Yocto?
René is one of the Living Legends
I've had my keyboard crash my kernel! I was using Gentoo trying to get it to work and unplugged my keyboard then plugged it back in and bam kernel panic in TTY
Well, there's FreeBSD, AFAIK they generally maintain stable ABI and API. Although OpenBSD or even Linux arguments also makes sense. Things have pros and cons, and yeah, stupid shit happens too.
🔥
What happened with the first take of the podcast?
Just when we finished the recording setup and got started our 4yo child got lost in the zoo and my wife emergency called me to help find him and notify the authorities. Thankfully we found him within 30m. 🙏
Thank god. Wish you and your family the best. Thanks!
@@renerebe thank goodness. The joys of parenting
Rene Rebe just got swatted by police whilst live-streaming coding for his T2 Linux distro and various programming tasks. It is possible for viewers helping out _(even if just a one-off)_ and those of us reading his site to go contributing as members of the public as funders so that he can get on with coding without knocks at the door from false allegations. So, you know, like maybe go ahead with that precise activity with immediate effect and mention the T2 Linux distro in tech conversation to assist.
My comment has no hate in it and I do no harm. I am not appalled or afraid, boasting or envying or complaining... Just saying. Psalms23: Giving thanks and praise to the Lord and peace and love. Also, I'd say Matthew6.
Whoo
yeah dont forget to show the cd to camera
Is T2 on Nintendo 64 though?
Theoretically. But Sega Dreamcast. Not to mention PS3 ;-)
I don't know, I'm all for less code. If people want support for ancient/outdated/obsolete hardware than have a legacy kernel with all old drivers.
If you don't have the hw you don't run the code: so why would you care? If you have the affect he, you want it working, sooo ?!?!? The deleted code does not aftect performance or functionality on your latest x86 box at all.
@@MoreReneRebe I'm pretty sure there is some obscure way to exploit some old code even though it won't explicitly run on startup. If it exists, it can/could be exploited.
@@owlmostdead9492not really. All ia64 or sowex code is not even built for x86. And even vintage PCMCIA modules are not loaded without matching hardware.so a lot of fuss about nothing. Except removing hardware support that just worked.
@@renerebe Are these old drivers 100% self contained? No dependency on secondary old code that is accessible/callable in the system without the old drivers even running but they have to be there because of compatibility? I'm not a kernel dev, I'm approaching "less code" from an application perspective not system.. so I'm far from knowledgable enough
@@owlmostdead9492of course, especially all the non x86 arch code, but the driver modules, too.
Rene needs to get better internet
