    I have started to use tongue depressors for the male connectors. They are stronger and don't fray on the edges.

      GREAT idea.

    • @ubermoose5694
      @ubermoose5694 5 лет назад +12

      I bet that could be used throughout the build. Instead of cutting male tabs into the middle pieces cut everything with female slots and glue the tongue depressor sections where you want male tabs.

    • @Monkeyshaman
      @Monkeyshaman 5 лет назад +2

      @@ubermoose5694 other than for stability I don't see why you would want to glue them down at all.

    • @ubermoose5694
      @ubermoose5694 5 лет назад +4

      @@Monkeyshaman what I've found with using tongue depressors is they're not as consistent in their thickness as the chipboard. So they don't always hold as tight as the built in tabs. You're totally right that the only reason to build tabs into the structure instead of just making all female slots and using double sided tabs is stability.

    Great job as always, dude.
    New tip I discovered, if you're looking for quality gimble to add variation/textures to your sci-fi/modern terrain then the best thing I've found is to keep medicine capsule/caplet/pill blisters (plastic on one side & foil on the other).
    The middle parts (of the blister) usually have a great little design with extra little diamond markings that look great once primed & painted. Just superglue them on to add a little bit extra to an otherwise bare wall/barricade.
    Also, using strapping tape (used to externally package large boxes) is great for trimming as it looks like reinforced steel once primed & painted

    I've been working on making a set of terrain based on this system. I'm going to be incorporating these updates and using tongue depressors instead of adding male tabs from here on out. This has been so inspiring for me. I can't wait to finish so I can play some games with it. Looking forward to the next videos in the series!

    CONTAINERS PLZ!!! Shipping crates, Ammo boxes, Weapons Lockers, Barrels, Drums, Pressurized Tanks, MEDKITS!! Containers, especially SCI-FI style containers, seem to be the hardest thing to find in all of DIY. Im not sure why o.o
    I dont think there is one single tutorial online whatsoever for ANY container from the HALO franchise, even though there is a massive amount of weapon, vehicle, and armor tutorials. O.o Just WHAT are you supposed to put all those weapons and armor IN exactly? O.O

    You can/should also color your male adapter so you don't accidentally rip out a real tab because you forgot which was which. Also, you can color the female adapter black for it to fit in a little better.

    Hey Wyloch
    I just wanted to share a principle of my personal design philosophy, a point which you seem to be ignoring.
    (You're free to do what you like of course, but I wanted to suggest maybe some new point of view).
    The principle is as follows: looking good is not enough. The terrain should FEEL GOOD when you touch it with a mini or with your hand. If it's janky or wobbly, it's bad, even if it looks beautiful. Everything should feel sturdy and safe. If you hit it by mistake when moving your hand, it should be unharmed and unmoved.
    This is why I did away with a lot of terrain pieces that were too light, too dishomogeneous. No paper flags, no scatter terrain, and I never put terrain on top of other terrain without a perfect snug fit or a magnet, and no smooth surface where models can slide.
    The ideal terrain should be a solid castle, that feels completely united to the touch, and can withstand clumsy hits from my elbow without moving an inch.
    It feels so nice to move models around/in/on a piece safely. It feels so nice to have nothing that wobbles when you kick the table's leg and I can't live without that feeling now.
    May look worse in pictures, but that solidity is what I live for. My five cents on something that matters and is overlooked by many terrain crafters.

    • @grayeaglej
      @grayeaglej 5 лет назад +2

      I agree with your sentiment, however I think Wylock's vids are aimed at much younger and amateurish audiences who are just getting started either in crafting or in the game itself.
      Making something more solid is something that comes with time, money, and experience. These pieces (assuming you dont plan on transporting them much) could be fixed to MDF bases, filled with sand or plaster, or even made entirely of MDF or even completely from metal. Anything is possible, that is just not the purview of these tutorials.

    Really cool to continue to see more ideas for these walkways. Now I'm inspired to try to make wooden walkways again, possibly something like in an elven or treetop village. I mostly play in a fantasy setting so futuristic Warhammer doesn't fit nearly as well, but I can really see a lot of the same concepts being applied to that different theme/genre.

    Currently looking into building a set of these for myself. I'm hoping to do it in a way that they can be modular with other building types (mainly gothic ruins and industrial mines) since I like the idea of a building opening up to a walkway. I think the main thing is to adjust the gothic ruins enough that they fit the height of the cans.

    Come to think of it, those fuse clip-ons could make for perfectly serviceable objective markers in their own right, to match the ones on bases. Just vary the number of fuses to denote which number it is. They could be used in combination with the base mounted ones, or you could build a simple scatter terrain frame to mount the clip-ons to, if they need to be uniform and/or you want to stick them on the ground or the middle of something instead.

    One small suggestion, you might try painting the silver ends of those fuses black then dry brush with a metallic color. The shininess kinda stands out from the rest of the terrain. I remembered that from an ancient White Dwarf article for making Epic scale razor wire. They had recommended using some kind of thin aluminum wire and advised the prime and dry brush because if you didn't, it would just look like some aluminum wire on the table and not terrain.

    Again, thank you for posting this continuation on your modular system of terrain. Excellent ideas. A thought ... an old used wet teabag for weathering your banner? Also, the hair curler ladders are great, but ... and while I understand the mechanical why ... I have to ask, why did you keep the "wide" ends to connect the two segments? Cosmetically, this looks off and physically, would make the ladder unusable for a climber. Couldn't these two pieces be fastenened alternatively to give a more seamless series of naturally spaced rungs?

      Play Grimdark Future instead. Its free, its easier, and it's more fun. And it uses 40k models.
