  • In December 2012, Kobe Bryant wasn’t even halfway through his last elite Lakers season, but he was putting more thought into the bigger picture than ever before. What was leadership all about, anyway? How could he use social media to advance his message? Would he rather be remembered as a winner or a great teammate? And what made him want to pick up the phone and call Bill Simmons out of the blue?

Kobe was a stoic and to me his best way to lead was by example, that's why his words always beared so much credibility among fans and more importantly basketball peers

I never had much use for Kobe until the last couple years of his career--until this thoughtful, incisive, sharply intelligent man revealed himself. He wasn't this entitled enfant terrible of basketball, this prototypical Laker (lifelong GS fan...I never liked the Lakers, and never will). I wasn't sure I'd ever like him, but I respected him and I always found him worth listening to, almost regardless of the subject.
But by the time of that awful, tragic crash, I found myself mourning like so many other fans of the NBA. It didn't matter if you liked him--he just didn't care, and all of the fans knew it. So when he'd reveal these concerns and preoccupations, the way he aged and faced Father Time, the way he retired and how happy and productive he was after that retirement, I'd come to admire him in part because of that frankness, that focus on his own destiny. Because when he did something I respected, I knew there might be calculation of his actions' effect--of course there was; how could there not be? Kobe could turn honesty into a competition, for god's sake!--but there was nothing deceptive.
He showed himself to cement his real legacy; he didn't use PR and puff-pieces. He didn't lie or mislead, and I am certain he'd have gone on to a post-playing career every bit as brilliant as his most dominant basketball days.
    RIP Kobe.

This reminds me why I wish Bill would write columns regularly, I consume a lot of content, but he was always at his best when he was writing in my opinion.

Excellent, brilliantly done piece about Kobe. I don’t consider myself a Kobe fan, but can appreciate the all-out devotion others display towards their passion. Thank you for the content, and thank you for sharing this with us Bill.

Not to get likes or some shit, “You should have said hey” makes you smile after the last dance 1996 finals shit but “I will next time” gets me in tears every time

Thanks for sharing your story. Its amazing to hear how great Kobe was even in a phone call and as a soccer dad. And even more amazingly difficult to think there's always a next time rather than walk a few minutes to see someone.

Old school Bill!! Great piece!! Reminds me of my security days! I used to LOVE reading your columns! You were kind of like Shaq for me! Even though I was a huge Kobe supporter, you were too funny to actually hate!

Kobe is the sage of basketball, I love that he predicted the newfound confidence of Lebron that would take him to new heights of dominance, and his assessment of the Thunder. Psychic stuff
