Kia ora tatou i tenei wa. Just abit about my background I'm Maori, I'm fluent in Te reo rangatira and I have a sound base in tikanga and Kawa (customs and protocols) around things Maori including Haka. I feel that I have to say afew words after reading some of the misguided comments. Firstly the Haka is not about invoking a politically correct or passive response from those who witness it or who the Haka is directed at. The Sth Africans are perfectly fine to try and chant over the top of it because Haka is about invoking passion, fear, courage etc etc and not just from those who perform it. When the Maori Batallion did their famous Hakas before they went into battle they didn't expect their enemies to sit back and be passive. the same applied when Maori tribes fought each other. I'm tired of people like Graham Henry who by the way has no idea of what Haka really mean or the whakapapa of Haka telling other teams and fans on how they should passively reply to the All Blacks Haka. Even the great Buck Shelford was wrong when he tried to tell John Eales on how the Wallabies should of respected the Haka. Finally the whakapapa of the Haka dictates that the All Blacks and their supporters have no say on how a team should or fans should react to it. This world is full of PC bullshit please dont try and water down and make a 'Taonga tuku iho' like Haka politically correct. For those who dont know a 'Taonga tuku iho' means a treasure passed down through the generations. Nga mihi nui ki a tatou katoa.
denver tai Nice bro! Im respect Maori culture, in the future I would like to get Maori tattoo but I heard its only for Maori background that can get the tattoo.
Tena koe Tong C, the Maori tattoo you talk about is called Ta moko and yes Ta moko is for Maori because it involves aspects like whakapapa and birthright. Non Maori can still get Maori design tattoo from Maori Ta moko artists but instead of being called Ta moko they are called Kirituhi. Famous people like Ben Harper and Robbie Williams have this type of Maori style tattoo. Most Maori Ta moko artist will perform Kirituhi on non Maori mainly because they need the business and it is another avenue for their artwork to be shown to the world. So you went to MAGS aye bro, good school man I went to a Maori boys boarding school that used to play you guys in rugby and yep we did Haka before our games and yep there were reactions lol it was mean as lol chur bro take it easy and mauriora.
Franko I'm not 100 percent sure on the whakapapa or origins of Kapa o Pango but the korero (talk) that I've heard about it, is that the AB's perform it when they feel the challenge is extra big or special. As far as challenges go for the AB's then it doesn't get much bigger then playing the Boks up on the high veldt at Loftus. The other Haka Kamate also has a controversal origin as it was composed and first performed by a controversal Maori chief who was abit of a war lord and conquerer. In some parts of NZ and to some Maori the haka Kamate is a reminder of this Chief and the mamae (pain) that he inflicted on their ancestors and yes my ancestors suffered at the hands of this chief. I think the All Blacks wanted an alternative Haka that was independent and free of the controversal origins of kamate. The NZ Maori rugby team used to have Kamate as their Haka but in 2001 they got a new Haka called Timatanga which means beginning. From memory Kapa o Pango was first used in 2005 by the AB's and Tana Umaga was the first Kaea (leader) of it. Hope this korero helps Franko....cheers bro

Quick fact: All Blacks only use this haka (kapa o pango) for teams that they consider a real challenge, and the other haka (ka mate) is used for lesser opponents
If you actually go look on wikipedia about the ABs haka they perform the Kapa o Pango quite often. Funny enough the last two mathces against the Boks the All Blacks before the test performed both times Ka Mate, both matches went down to wire in which the Boks won one in NZ. I don't think the Boks like Ka Mate, whereas the Kapa o Pango was where the Boks lost with 57 points on 2 occasions.
That's an interesting one. They used Kapa O Pango in Chicago against Ireland and Ka Mate in the 2nd test in Dublin. I would of thought Ireland are a real challenge to them. Be interesting to see what they use in the Northern Tour this Nov against England and Ireland.

As a South African, we don't disrespect the All Blacks. In SA, each Saffa is ingrained from childhood that one only fears God and nothing or nobody else.
