Houtzaagmolen 'De Rat' in IJlst

Aan de boorden van de Geeuw, een eeuwenoude vaarverbinding tussen IJlst en Sneek, staat vanaf 1828 "De Rat", een herbouwde houtzaagmolen. Overigens is de molen nog veel ouder. Oorspronkelijk komt ze uit de Zaanstreek, waar ze al vanaf 1683 als balkenzager fungeerde. Maar ze werd aangekocht door IJlst, helemaal uit elkaar gehaald en hier, op deze plek weer opgebouwd.
Slenterend tussen de stammen die liggen te wateren, gelokt door de wenkende molenwieken, nieuwsgierig naar het gestamp van de op en neergaande zaagramen, brengt de geur van het vers gezaagde hout bezoekers terug naar een tijd waarin het aloude houtzagersambacht nog dagelijks werk was. Those are sash saws. The mechanized version of the old "whip saw" method where logs were cut into boards by hand using crosscut saws. One man stood above the log and another man below, usually in a pit, who wound up with the handle of "pit man"....... ......a hard messy job.......
That's the first time I've seen a sash saw in use outside of the United States.
There is a working water powered sash saw in a museum in Massachusetts and there WAS one in or near Guelph, Ontario, Canada.

cahartley7 dear Sir we in England call them Frame saws but what ever you call them, or we call them. They are very efficient and when you combine them with Dutch Know how, and knowledge of wind power they beat anything an American could think of into the ground! Also Dutch history pre dates yours by? Years?
