      Yes could do - but you know the AAIB are not that happy with this solution in Calidus I've had conversations with their investigators about the suitability and they would prefer it if the CAA made a more onerous test for the certification process. In truth trying to break out of the canopy having had an accident with something akin to a toffee hammer and I don't think it would work out well tbh.

      @tomgalloway4891 3 года назад

      @@gyrocopterflyingclub6148Really - unless the machine ended up completely inverted (unlikely unless the mast snapped off) this would not be an issue as on its side the canopy could be opened.
      When it comes to the Calidus, this is a problem if it rolls onto its left side.
      It is quite easy in fact to break the canopy to escape and I speak from direct experience of this.
      I can confirm that the Calidus canopy was very easy to break in order to escape when I crashed and tipped onto the left side.
      It may look like a toffee hammer but it is actually a well designed tool to break a canopy/windscreen and if necessary cut seat belt restraints.
      I think in fact the real life safety issue would be trying to safely ditch in the water.

    Of my many years watching the development of gyros, it's common for a past design to be re-badged as 'the next big thing's from companies.
    Sure, it's great to see the development on-going, however to see a design re-morphing is the " everything old has become new again" scenario.
    As much as designers try to put a 'new sleek' spin on the design. The flight fundamentals remain the same. It has to lift its own body into the air to fly safely.
    This is a Rotorvox MkII, as you correctly described.

They have produced a manual here:- www.zsengine.eu/Manuals/C100-F%20Installation%20Manual.pdf My own personal view is that it will at some point be accepted and then why would you not buy one? After all it is highly likely the factory can make things to as good a tolerance as anything in Western factories if they choose it.

    • @gyrocopterflyingclub6148
      @gyrocopterflyingclub6148  3 года назад

      Hey Mike - I don't necessarily disagree with the view that the aircraft looks to have some good qualities and for now the Rotax motor is tired and tested... BUT... if i were a manufacturer of gyroplanes in 2021 I'd be looking to source a cheaper power unit and Zongshen make one. Is it any good? I've no idea but there is no reason it can't be and when you consider that any light sport aircraft cost is 50% motor that is nuts.
      Here is a very popular European sport fixed wing and its price list: -www.skyranger.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2018/06/Brochure-and-price-list-Swift2-and-Nynja-V15-sept17.pdf
      I just don't get the negative sentiment if that inc. VAT price become £9000, making the total price of that aircraft with motor £30k - what is not to like? On the basis that a basic open 2 seat gyroplane shouldn't cost anymore than a Skyranger again what isn't to like if someone makes a reliable cheaper power unit from whatever country?

    As a Gyroplane pilot since 1985 I have a couple of thoughts here ; first the enclosure is typical for just about any European designed aircraft (RW or FW) in that it’s probably great for crappy European weather but you would find it pretty insufferable for much of the U. S. save coldest winter. That little sliding vent on the side does you zero good while waiting on a ramp for takeoff and not that much better inflight. Imagine being cooped up in there in Arizona or worse still Florida.
    Second, “Why don’t they use the Chinese engine” - because it’s a Chinese engine ! If it’s anything like some of my HarborFreight power tools I believe I’ll wait a bit to see how it fares.

    • @gyrocopterflyingclub6148
      @gyrocopterflyingclub6148  3 года назад +1

      Hey hope you are well. Yes 100% agree on the cockpit heat and I wonder if a neat design hear could be an intermediate catch that holds the canopy open at a mid position while on the ramp.
      On China I take the general point and no doubt the proof of the pudding will be in the eating although I'd make this more general observation. In the UK we have a variety of big hitting universities. Oxford, Cambridge, LSE, Imperial College and Bristol for those that didn't pay attention and missed a place at the others. Chinese students are a big feature in these places and lets be frank will be in US Ivy league too. The Chinese are not backward people and we tend to "fear" or reject them in the West mainly because we don't go on holiday there or understand them widely. If the Chinese want to make a Rotax type GA motor then it can be even better if they are motivated that way.

    Rotax IS OVERPRICED and I would think are pricing themselves out of the business. They have already priced themselves out of my price range and many others I would think. They are leaving the door wide open for other engine manufacturers to steal a large portion of the market with a high quality yet reasonably priced engines.
    I feel China is no different than any other country whether it's the U.S., U.K. or Germany etc.... They can produce top quality products that last and perform well or they can produce the use once (if your lucky) and throw away level of quality.
    The engine would just have to be thoroughly tested to see where it stands.

    Not sure you appreciate how bad Chinese engines are. All their motorcycle engines are at the bottom of the scale when measured against the European oil contamination test. So much off the scale in fact that they are not reliable and for aircraft think that would mean not safe. I can’t remember the test name but Germans run top, UK mid section then the lower 3rd is occupied by Japanese and Italian yet the difference between them is minuscule parts per million of what ever contaminants they measure in the oil but!!! the Chinese engines are so bad the test equipment can not even measure the sample.. Maybe this is why.

    • @gyrocopterflyingclub6148

      Hey Paul - I'm not sure that its apples with apples however. I might agree that a $200 Honda 125cc motorbike copy has some limitations but the bottom line is that [as the carbon work in this Slovak aircraft is a guide] the modern factories in these countries are first rate and the people are super clever. I do hear your point BUT I should think that if they wish to make something that is up to the job then they certainly could and I think if they do that why would anyone buy a Rotax? Lets be honest if a GA aircraft flies 50hrs a year then its a lot and so in 10 years your £40K 915 Rotax effectively costs £80 per hour! Think about that!

      @@gyrocopterflyingclub6148 Unfortunately not just a 200 quid scooter engine. The contamination test is VDA 19 and there is an iso standard test as well but don’t know it. Test reports for all kinds of Chinese engines commonly show they come engineered with added plastic, fabric, sand and a myriad of other particles commonly found on a production line.. Though you do get them for free. 😉

      @@PaulAnthonyDuttonUkPaul I used to turn and machine turbocharger bearing housings, at odd times I'd machined compressor covers and much earlier when to be fair I when would not have known what I was looking at turbine housings. We ended up 2006ish buying in Chinese and Indian components. I never got to know the figures if they were run through a CMM machine, but I assume they must have been satisfactory I was doing some assembly work at the time. The surface finish on some of this stuff was absolutely excellent though. The thing that pissed me off was that with bearing housings we had a type of bearing housing where near the oil return the machining at that point left 1 or 2 cast projections. In house, we had to use a bar or file to break these off, then a few strokes with a file to clean the surface up. The bought in components didn't have these peaks removed. So if they were adequate then we had our in house machinists performing to a standard above specification.
      Yet another film talking bollocks about CNC machining. If you don't monitor the cuts of different tools it will all run away from you, and you will just produce shit. Too many times when I was starting off did I focus on my perceived problem and something else had moved and all I made was scrap!

Of course Morris Garages turns in his grave but at the price they seem to do a job. I should try and get a Chinese Rotax and fly it around see how it performs - I suspect that will be the only route to longer term acceptance is when one manages to fly x hrs without issue.
