Normally you taste a Russula by chewing a little bit on your tongue. If it tastes mild it's edible. Provided you first make sure it's a Russula!

Lol, I picked about 10 of these gems in my yard, cook them in butter and ate them. I only did it because when showed to my neighbor, he chewed it raw so fast before I could say anything. He’s still alive the next 36 hours and then I started sautéing it for dinner. That was over a week ago. I wasn’t sick or dizzy. FYI I wouldn’t try if they looked anything like the death caps though.

Are you still alive? Some poisonous ones have incubation periods of weeks 😁

@@stefaniebeh706 Russula Sp killed only one person ever recorded in Japan. So even a poisonous one will only make you pay a visit to an hospital most likely but it is always good to be cautious.

What was that book you were using for reference?

    • @Adam-wl8wn

It looks like "Mushrooms and other fungi of Great Britain & Europe" by Roger Phillips. It's the go to book of most of us Mushroom pickers here in the UK. Also, sadly, out of print, although eBay throws it up occasionally.

Why is there little or no audio on your fungus videos?

  • @ophrynion

If it is bitter cannot be eaten since it is toxic most likely. Independently of their colour, this is the general definition for Russula Sp. as far as I know.

I'm gonna say not. Those are not Texas birds and that's not a Texas forest. Probably somewhere in the UK.

There is audio, but sometimes videos don't open properly. Try reloading the page.

In the latter part of the video he takes a charcoal burner home to research more. I noticed the fairly large book he used that had wonderful pictures of each mushroom including gills, stems, top view, side view etc. Can anyone identify this book and please share with me the name and author? I would love to add it to my mushroom ID book collection.
    Many thanks

I’m sure the book he is using is by Roger Phillips and is simply called Mushrooms. I have it, and it is excellent, but a small criticism might be with the printed colour balance of a small number of the images, and therefore comparing colours with what you have found can be tricky.
