In the story of the game, this villain is like a foreign element to the world that travels here from another celestial body bringing corruption with it, so its theme not being as traditionally Japanese is interesting
Davi, you have never played Okami?! Dude, you've missed one of the best PS2 games. It's an experience on par with Shadow of the Colossus at the least. The HD version is on all platforms, Steam prominently and it's an experience you as a composer, as a gamer, as a human should have asap.
I first got Okami on the Wii (the mechanics of the Wiimote in order to draw the symbols was so fun) and I played it at least three times there and two on Xbox. I'm *so* stoked for the new one!
Makes sense this theme isn’t as “traditional” since the final boss is ominous/foreign/mechanical. The antithesis I suppose of the traditional “Shinto” themes of Okami. Yami is basically a giant mechanical Eldrich esque ball with power over darkness entirely. It’s form’s likely represents different vices/forms of violence man can commit. I forgot why the actual core is some odd almost fish like creature with lines on it like Okami, but the lines are EXACTLY straight, which some point out could point to it mocking the other gods and their stripes, but also how the straight lines point to “mechanical perfection, not natural”
A "man-made machine-god" would be the litteral opposite of the old gods yeah... Also machines tends to erase/kill the problem rather than solve it, given the opportunity, so Yami being some machine who lost its purpose and continue doing whatever corrupted conclusion it reached about its original function would be...terrifying. "There is no reasoning with it, just execution of a goal not even itself may understand the implications of" is a real worst-case scenario. Especially since unlike the old gods and demons it does not sleep.
This is actually the song from the first major phase of the boss fight- the final boss takes abilities away from the main character, and the player has to fight for them back. Other people in the comments have mentioned that the final boss is mechanical and meant to be strange and foreign, which is where the baroque elements and organ come in- this is the only track in the game that I can think of with non-Japanese elements (aside from the Oina tribe themes, which are more inspired by Ainu music). Using the organ wasn't because western musical styles are creeping in wherever things need to be ominous, it's there because this boss is foreign. Also, the track that you listened to before, The Sun Rises, is for the second main phase of the boss fight, with a cutscene between them- it's the part of the game where the main character returns to their true power and form, so the aggressively Japanese sound is the triumphant return of the light, etc.
Great video, Davi! Okami has an amazing OST. Shinshu Field Theme is one of my favorite field themes. You should definitely play the game. Okami literally brings you happiness. (幸)
Ah yes, the Yami OST. (SPOILERS ahead) The name of the track is actually "Emperor of Eternal Darkness". The protagonist of the track is clearly Yami itself but the track of positivity is Amaterasu fighting it, which immediatly gets destroyed by Yami coming back In the end, Yami wins at first agaist the sun goddess, until she get helped by the "friend she made along the way" and "The Sun Rises" again, playing the following track. An incredibly beautiful work by Rei Kondoh, who is the same madman behind the Bayonetta soundtrack which I highly suggest to listen to.
This, to me, is not the final boss theme. Its immediate follow-up "The Sun Rises" is the actual final boss theme, and it's one where you (the player) is the final boss.
Yami is an interesting sort. He represents evil in all forms. From what humanity has done in greed to what they've done with their bare hands. Each of his phases represent those aspects of evil. Even more: He's actually a machine being piloted by a small, almost pitiful, aquatic animal residing in a waterfilled glass ball.
Okami is such an amazing game with a fantastic soundtrack. I hope you get to play it one day, especially now that there's a sequel coming. Okami HD is available on modern systems.
Ah yes. Emperor of Eternal Darkness. Fantastic Final Boss and amazing battle themes. To give some background, the title is not just for show. His victory blankets the entire land in pure darkness (not unlike what Necrozma does to any pokemon fans). All of the evils through out the game originate from him. Be it Orochi, Ninetails, the Twin Owls, or every common demon you cut down. And in death they all return to him. Each form and phase he goes through is a depiction of humanity's evil and how it destroys, even to the point of smothering out gods. A small fish in a jar that controls it all showing how all evil can start small. The 1st form smashing everything, the 2nd burning and aflame, the 3rd showing how we'll gamble it all away, and the 4th a mech of sorts showing how we'll even use machines to do out dirty work. And in his last phase (yes, he has a LOT), he forms a hand, as we commit every evil with them. Editing as I watch: Heck, considering the unique western instruments noted here, could be a reference to how the western influence has caused so much damage to Japan throughout its life. It might not be, but it's an interesting way to read it I think. The glimpses of heroics could be you beating your powers out of him throughout the fight.
The blend of traditional Japanese with a more modern sound was actually intentional! The thought that went behind this entire soundtrack is really fascinating
Davi Vasc, you are my favorite RUclipsr composer ever! I loved this music when I had PS2, it's a masterpiece to listen to, plus I'm a big fan of foxes and kitsunes. I wish one day you could listen to the music of Touhou 15: Pure Furies ~ Whereabouts of the Heart. You will love listening to Junko's ZUNPETS. Also, thank you to make me happy. :)
you've got to play Okami. The HD version is on steam. Would love something like the bloodborne playthrough, where you react to all the music and art in the moment of gameplay on the gameplay channel
I am so happy to finally see you analyze this! Ever since you did The Sun Rises, this one is in my opinion a very important track to accompany it. As others have mentioned, the final boss has two parts. This is the first, and The Sun Rises is the second. That moment of hope you noticed, that's a motif from The Sun Rises. My favorite part of this track is thay fact that you can hear repeatedly in the music that motif breaking through, like rays of sun until it is ultimately interrupted again and again by the other music. The way the interruptions are, it almost sounds like mocking, like Yami is scoffing at you for even trying. This entire track is like a build up for The Sun Rises, where the payoff is you finally get to hear the song in full. I love this track, it isn't talked about as much as The Sun Rises which is arguably the main theme of the game. Its motifs can be heard throughout the soundtrack, and with Yami it teases you with it until finally giving you the full song. I honestly think it's very important to listen to them back to back rather than in isolation. I adore this soundtrack and this is one of my favorite games of all time.
Okami ties with Dragon Quest 11 as my all-time favorite game. It's got one of the greatest soundtracks in video games imo. Glad to hear you talking about it!
Uhm, I wasn't expecting the organ. I have been playing Okami and I just finished the first half. I don't remember an organ, but I could be wrong since I mostly remember the exploration tracks, which are pretty cool. Either way, the melody is good. And since the boss of the end of the first half has multiple "phases" yeah I suppose the final battle is kind of similar in that aspect. Well, that's it. ¡Adiós!
okami! thanks for doing a track from my favorite game. i think you'd find the 'twin devils lechku and nechku' track from the same OST really interesting too.
I never appreciated this song enough as a kid when I was playing the game, in part because I was younger and in part because the music perfectly sets the tone for the overwhelming, frustrating, and panic-inducing odds of this final battle. I was always too busy just trying to survive and time my actions right when fighting Yami. It really does sound otherworldly, compared to the rest of the soundtrack. The only other track that comes to mind when I think of ones that sound like they don't fit the theme is Wawku Shrine, and that one is appropriately different, too, in my opinion, given the bosses of that dungeon.
@@Sonicfalcon16this. Having played again recently, the story and gameplay aren’t the “ten out of tens too” that I felt they were when I was a kid. Still 8-9 out of ten for both tho. The gameplay element of being able to use powers outside of combat blew my mind as a kid and is still nifty to this day. The story itself isn’t always highs(naturally)due to how long it is
You really should try nine sols themes they are really good. My list would be: 1) Yi's theme a path for us all 2) The lone sol 3) Jiequan's theme ballad of warriors 4) Eigong's theme my will is our truth 5) Ji's theme long awaited death
day 1 of asking for made in abyss OSTs from kevin penkin, my favs are ''Prayer & Immolation'' and ''Encounter of the Umbra Hands'' Kevin Penkin's instrument choices, changeups and continuous moving parts are like he is stuffing a series of Jackson Pollocks through a woodchipper, and then acting as though it is completely normal that he somehow presents you with a Mona Lisa grade artwork made of the woodchips. It's art.
That's a great track! Yami means Darkness in Japanese, right? The organ makes sense in this case... This also reminds me that I never finished Okami :v
Have you heard of the wither storm theme from Minecraft story mode? It's one of my favourite songs from any game and I would love to see you react to it.
I like to think the shakuhachi and other japanese instruments are representative of Amaterasu, she's doing what she has to and this fight is also emotionally her lowest point in the entire game.
I don't know if you're gonna see this, but I'd like to see a reaction video of shadow fight 2 ost. Even tho its a mobile game, it was way ahead of its time in music, lore and gameplay. Hope that game gets the recognition it deserves.
Makes sense this theme isn’t as “traditional” since the final boss is ominous/foreign/mechanical. The antithesis I suppose of the traditional “Shinto” themes of Okami. Aaaah crap I missed it on my PS2 days. Never had a thought to buy it. I just bought it and have it waiting to play on steam now
