I remember when chima came out. Seeing the first wave sets, and then seeing a crocodile boat that had an attached helicopter, I was sold. Because of that, I really liked the theme.

I was the only Ninjago fan my age who thought it was worth it giving Chima a chance. And you know what, it was a worthy evolution of the average “big bang” theme whose innovations would bleed into later big bangs like Nexo Knights and Monkie Kid and back into Ninjago. Sure, it was held back by the limitations of the show’s writing and the parts of the time, but man was it something.

  • @Obi-Wan_Kenobi

Chima being deliberately designed as NInjago's replacement is probably the genesis for Ninjago fans' general hostilities to new Lego story themes. They felt threatened by Nexo Knights and even Monkey Kid because they think they are also trying to replace Ninjago using Chima as a precedent.

As a kid in the 80s I was a fan of this toyline called Battle Beasts. The concept behind them and Chima is almost the same, tribes of anthropomorphic animals battling it out using sci-fi/fantasy tech. I remember seeing Chima in stores and wishing I were a kid again, because the sets looked really cool. I would've loved them growing up. The crocodile boat looked awesome.

I havnt forgoten battle beasts (mostly because I loved Headmasters era transformers) Battle Beast will be seen in a very special episode about the themes biggest controversy.

Very interesting hearing about potential Fabuland reboots, considering Lego Animal Crossing was just announced.
That's pretty much the next generation of Fabuland, just without the oversized pieces.
I wonder if the same people were involved.

I was there as a kid, when both Ninjago and Chima used to air on Cartoon Network! It's true about what you said, a lot of my friends and others kids at school just absolutely LOATHED Chima, as we all thought it was going to replace Ninjago, after the season 2 finale (the intended finale for the Ninjago series, before Rebooted was quick created to expand the theme. I'm a HUGE Ninjago fan and I'm still watching it today, and Dragons Rising season 1 has been a awesome soft-reboot/continuation of Ninjago's lore and worldbuidling so far) and I felt like I was the only kid at my school who actually watched Chima. 😅
While China's show does pale (sadly, heavily) in comparison to Ninjago's show, I still enjoyed it, and I feel like the STILL SHOCKINGLY EVER-PRESENT MODERN DAY HATE for it is so unwarranted! Thank you for making this retrospective series, since I hope some non-fans will at least warm up to the sets, miniature designs/sculpts, and just the overall really interesting worldbuiding this theme had! 💙

Yea... honestly at first i hated it, only wanting sets that had crocs in them. Didn't like the show but by the end of season 1 with the black clouds i was sold.

Coming from Sluggers video. Must say, very well put together video! Was a Chima fan since the very beginning and still follow the communities tied to this theme today. Chima has always had a special place in my heart since its launch in 2013 and man was this theme great. Never really had any biased towards the theme. Even if it were to successfully take over Ninjago's spot, I would not have mind, personally that is. If this theme was able to still go on along side Ninjago I would have been stoked! (Past 2015 that is). Anyways, very excited for what is to come next!

One thing I do want to point out is that while there are certainly parallels between Chi and controlled substances, Chi is as much a resource as it is something that changes physiology. In that way, it's a lot more akin to something between money and batteries than it is drugs.

i vaguely remember seeing the sets in stores (mostly target) way back when chima was the new thing lego wanted to push out. though since i was like 6 and wasnt into legos back then. i skipped out on it. and only all these years later have i garnered a fascination for the series. the characters hit right. the builds are magnificent. and the worldbuilding is... perhaps a little bit cheap in some places. but relatively solid for something that ties into a building block toyline. im hoping to get some sets of my own sometime online. mostly ones starring the villainous tribes like the crocs and especially the later scorpions/spiders.
slugger might've sent me but i can say with confidence i'll be following this series and see where it leads. and perhaps use it as a guideline on which sets to get if your gonna be giving your collector's thoughts on them like how slugger does. looking forward to the next installment!

It is probably the most recognizable mecha song for most people living in the United States and Canada.
I know most people didn't grow up watching AZN or other channels that had a variety of shows with the soundtracks that were not used in shows if released in the USA because of licensing due to songs typically done with the intent for a record deal.

Good video! One point of criticism to make future ones even better, though: Try to comb over your scripts to avoid repeating the same word or phrase too often. Repeated uses of the word "Chi" could be replaced by "it", while repeated character names could be replaced with pronouns like he or she, for example.

  • @matthewtaylor744
    @matthewtaylor744 11 месяцев назад

Not bad, but you should work on your script writing. Try consolidating your sentences more, you're using a ton of simple ones. It's really sticks out in the couple places you start like, 2 or 3 sentences with the same noun. So yeah, look into working on that. You're visuals and editing is good though, and you definitely have the knowledge, just polish the scripts more.

And another point to the contrary, I'm a furry, but the theme never enticed me. I never bought any chima sets when it was active, and honestly forgot it existed. Years later, I did get reminded of it and started buying some of the minifigs off bricklink, though, I like the uniqueness of non-human minifigs, not even just furry ones. They're a nice contrast to the ocean of yellow and skin-toned standard minifigs. Though I ended up buying a bunch of the vidiyo stuff before that was all discontinued for the same reason; maybe I would've gone for Chima if it hadn't come out at a time I both wasn't as interested in lego any more, and lacked the money to buy sets anyway.
