  • In this video we show you step by step how to do the exercise 'Ich denke die Rede' - 'I think Speech'.
When these gestures, which we will now show, are made one after the other, they have a harmonising and I-strengthening effect on the soul. In difficult times they can be experienced as help. With these gestures one also finds one's way to eurythmy particularly well.
The six positions of the human figure, arranged in different geometric figures, come from the work "De Occulta Philosophia" by Cornelius Agrippa von Nettesheim.
I Put your feet side by side and stretch out your arms so that they are horizontal.
II With your right foot, place your feet slightly apart and hold your arms so that they are about the same height as your larynx.
III Spread your feet out a little further by putting your left foot to one side. Hold your arms up so that you have your hands so that when you join them with a line, it goes under your heart.
IV Spread your feet, with the right foot, even further out, very wide, hold the arms so that you have your hands far above your head, but there should be a line exactly from the hands to the feet.
V Put the feet back in the third position, and now make the arms so that the hands form a line just above the head when you draw a line.
VI Keep the legs together and the arms vertical, all the way up.
Once one has mastered these individual positions, attention can be paid to the relationship between the arm and leg movements, whether the arms and legs are moving parallel or opposite to each other.
Then pay attention to the geometric figure in which the figure in question is located, in a circle or square or pentagram:
    I to II parallel
    II to III opposite
    III to IV parallel
    IV to V parallel
    V to VI opposite
Then check whether the figure in question is in a circle, or in a square or pentagram (see drawing):
I The figure is standing in the square: with head, hands and feet we touch the sides.
II The figure is in a circle: with hands and feet we touch the circle.
III The figure is in the Pentagram and in the circle: we are standing in the five star (from the Right foot - to the head - left foot - right hand - left hand - right foot) and touch the circle with our head, hands and feet.
IV The figure is in the square: we touch the corners with our hands and feet.
V The figure is standing in a circle: we touch the circle with our hands and feet.
VI The figure is in the square: we touch the horizontal with our hands and feet
It was not until twelve years later that Rudolf Steiner made a statement about this exercise:
    I think speech I
    I speak II
    I have spoken III
I seek myself in the spirit IV
I feel myself in me V
I am on the way to the spirit to me VI
Literature: R. Steiner GA 277a, GA 279 and Logos Eurythmy.
(The information of Rudolf Steiner can be found in GA 277a, p. 14 and GA 279, 12 July 1924).
The videos are based on the original German Eurythmy given by Rudolf Steiner. That is why sometimes vowels or consonants are pronounced differently than we are used to in English.

In the version I know the palms for position 4 are pointing upwards not downwards. "I seek myself in the spirit"
There's a different version that replaces "me" with "myself". Ie. I feel myself within myself and I am on the way to the spirit to myself.
    Nice presentation, thanks.

Rudolf Steiner's literature does not say that the palms should be turned in the fourth position.
Yes, there are indeed several variations of this verse, which can be found in GA 279.
      Thank you for your comment!
