  • Spanning over a decade from the early 1950s through to the mid-60s, NOVITIATE is about a young girl's first initiation with love, in this case with God. Raised by a non-religious, single mother in rural Tennessee, a scholarship to Catholic school soon finds Cathleen drawn into the mystery and romanticism of a life devoted to the worship and servitude of God.

I wish that some ex-nuns would respond to this movie, instead of mostly Catholics or ex-Catholics who think they knew what went on behind the closed doors of the convents. This was a cloistered community (they never left the grounds and seldom spoke). I was a nun in an active community during this historical time. Some of what was portrayed in this movie is true and did happen in some convents, other things I can’t even imagining happening like the scenes of the young women dancing around an outdoor fire with the bridal gowns on. But the reluctance of the Mother Superior to react positively to the changes brought forth by the Vatican Council and her reluctance to educate the other nuns about it was true in the community I belonged to, as well. Several nuns left our community because they embraced the changes and the community did not. The discipline or flagellation wasn’t practiced in many communities in this century, but had been practiced in the far past, but more often by brothers. Read books and stories by ex- nuns and you’ll find some similarities to this movie.

What is the goal of monastic life? In the movie, the main bone of contention between the Mother Superior and the new directives of the Vatican Council is that the older nun(s) want the order to remain a closed community. They believed the convent should be a place of spiritual refuge sheltered from the materialism of the wider society. This attitude was criticized by reformers in the Church. The reformers called for nuns to be more involved with society in general. They felt nuns should be aware of current affairs. The reformers assumed it was possible for each nun to retain an inner spirituality even while working outside the monastic walls. I suppose different orders have different priorities. But the movie depicts the deep divide between two very different approaches to monastic life.

Vatican II destroyed the women religious as well as much more. Not from the documents of Vatican II but from the bishops going their own way. The church is metaphysical and can't be broken nor destroyed but souls can be. St Athanasius was right the paving stones of hell will be the skulls of priests and bishops - 325AD.
We were under communism so we missed much but kept our Catholic sanity while dying like odious vermin.

Vatican II brought nothing but heresy to my church. No young man dreams of being a priest in an Anglican rite novus ordo mass. We want the tradition that the hippie popes like John XXIII and Paul VI tried to get rid of. We want the latin mass, the gregorian chants, the respect the eucharist once had. Thats what young men like me want. You think age made you wise but it made you stupid and blind.

@@caneloalvarez1516 That sounds like you want a romanticised version of the Church and not face the real problems both physical and spiritual inherent in cloistered communities. The Santo Domingo De Silos Monastery Choir put out a Gregorian chant CD in the 1990s, were they disrespecting tradition? Isn't it possible to meld the old and the new for the benefit of all?

As a former nun who entered a convent at age 14 in 1963 the trailer looks pretty accurate. The flagellation was not typical. That appears a bit of over dramatic Hollywood add on. People want to think that was common ; it was not.. Just like not all congregations cut off a novices hair. Vatican II was so needed and Pope John XXIII brought about a great deal of consolidation among Christian religions. He pointed us in the direction of unity and understanding. The religions still had their own interpretations. My congregation was very reticent to change the habit or allow people to return to their baptismal names. It wasn't till 1970 that the habit was significantly modified. Yes, there was a mass exodus during the mid to late 1960's. My congregation demonized anyone who left. It was sad. I saw someone commenting sarcastically and calling someone a "boomer". They appear a bit uninformed but want to silence people with whom they disagree. Too bad they are so intolerant of a difference of ideas.

An absolute gem of a movie. Not only the story of a young girl trying to become a nun (which is interesting in itself) but raises the question to what extent the changes recommended by Vatican II were inadvertently harmful to the very basis of monastic life. The Mother Superior's methods seem harsh, old-fashioned. She's vain, overbearing, not at all "Christian-like". Yet the older nuns represent a strong, interconnected, distinct community and this cohesiveness was threatened by the liberalizing attitudes of the 1960's. Cathleen's path was left hanging at the end so there's lots of possible story lines to follow in a sequel.

Here's the thing: according to the Catholic Church, no Pope or church council can change doctrine in such a way that it fundamentally contradicts what prior councils and popes codified. This is, as I understand it, how the charism of infallibility works: matters of faith and practice, ex cathedra, etc. Cardinal Newman also elaborated upon this in his work on the Development of Doctrine. Thus, did Vatican II really _change_ anything or did it simply provide a fuller picture of what the Church already implicitly believed from its inception?

Não me sinto seguro de deixar meus filhos aos cuidados de um padre ou pastor evangélico. Duas freiras se descobrindo, descobrindo o prazer é de longe o menor dos problemas que poderia acontecer em um filme retratando a igreja católica 😢

Perhaps all involved with this film should have done a little research before filming. Inaccuracies and exaggerations are too numerous to count. This film is tantamount to the Library of Congress asking someone to give a public lecture on Dickens whose only knowledge of Dickens is reading a "Christmas Carol" every December.
