26:58 It was stated. _Indirectly._ Watch the way burnt oak's facial expression and tone of voice change when he knows why the apples showed up, or the way Big Mac wants to know more stories about his dad and Burnt Oak tears up. Or how Mrs. Cake goes from a smile to a frown when Applejack mentions her mother. This episode is filled with many subtle cues about them being dead that thinking theyre anything but dead is ridiculous.
I agree, it's so painfully obvious that I can't help but roll my eyes whenever someone claims there's a chance of them being alive. Just let it go guys lol
the fact that Granny says to Grand " i'm sorry, I should have told you all about *her* sooner." she isn't talking about the existence of the grandfoals, because she would have said 'them'. she's referring to Buttercup and something happening to her.
from what we see of him, I doubt he would leave his children willingly. Granny wouldn't necessarily need to tell Grand about Bright Mac if something happened to him, but Grand would care if something happened to Buttercup. my theory is that there was an accident that took both of them.
I know it's obvious, but i just wanted to point out that Applebloom has almost the exact same color scheme as Bright Mac, and Applejack got her hat from him
Kito Brown Sorry, but how are apples sexual? I suppose two of them could resemble testicles, which Granny Smith doesn't have. Unless you're thinking of apple sauce.
27:05 - Wow, friggin' thank you. You're the first blind reactor to this episode who not only acknowledged, but addressed _immediately_, that you would be okay if the show didn't explicitly state that they were dead. I've seen SO many other reactions/reviews that nitpicked "But we STILL DON'T KNOW if they're dead!" I would think that several clues (the way the reminiscers address the parents in the past tense, "something to remember them by", etc.) would've made it obvious. :P
Yeah something to remember them by is what got me to believe that they're dead, plus added to the fact that everyone talked about them in past tense. They of course can't outright say it because of the rating, but it should be pretty dang obvious that they're dead at this point. And besides the story wasn't suppose to be about their death, but instead how they lived was what was important.
Usagi1992 this episode is the worst episode of my Little pony. Grand pear is an awful character and pearbutter is just a reversed aj colour scheme with fluffy hair. Also where did big Mac get his red coat or aj get all her colours from. Also they never say they're dead directly, so this is the worst episode I have ever watched. I she'd tears of pain watching this episode! This episode is *OVERATED* And that, people, is how to trigger bronys in one simple step.
Despite the resentment Grand Pear had by refusing to acknowledge his daughter's marriage to her new husband, Granny Smith stepped in and accepted her new daughter-in-law in open arms. EDIT: It's tragic he never got to forgive her so many years later.
While what Grand Pear did was terrible Its easy for me to be sympathetic. Letting pride and anger get between you and family is something I've seen happen quite a bit.
Patrick Morrison: Why not? He obviously feels guilty over what he did and wishes that things he had done things differently, I do feel bad for him because he at the very least realizes how foolish he was.
+Book Lover He didnt feel sorry when he moved away, he didnt feel sorry a year after, he didnt feel sorry when his grand children were born and he didnt feel sorry after his daughter died knowing that he disowned her. but after what was possibly decades after he chose himself over his family we are suddenly supposed to feel sorry for him now?
Who knows how long he's been trying to gather up the courage to go see his daughter, he was probably terrified that she would never want to speak to him again after he had gotten over his stubborn ways. And we can't know how long it's been that he's gotten over his stubborn behavior of not talking to her, so he was probably trying to gather all of his strengths to talk to her. It's something that's sad but it does happen in real life. He feels guilty now for what he did and realizes what he did was wrong, so it's easier for me to forgive him. Now if he was still as stubborn as before not wanting any contact to the Apple family that would be different, but that isn't the case. I don't know, maybe I'm a little more of a forgiven nature but I do feel bad for him and sympathize with him.

even though we've seen them, I'd love a more in-depth episode of Twilight's and Rarity and Sweetie Belle's parents (we don't even know what they sound like!)
I like to think that Grand Pear had contact with his daughter, but it was distant and civil. Emotionally cool. After all, he did seem to know the apple kids and what they looked like. It's why he gave Bloom a free jar of butter. Also, the trees are heavily implied to be the seeds they planted to seal thier vows.
You can have contact and not be friendly with a family member. I know this from personal experience. Plus, the contact could have been one way. I'm of the opinion that depressing =/= better which is why I don't read a lot of feelsy MLP comics. They're more often than not empty depression and pessimism.
Okay, so I've seen this episode like half a dozen or more times but it wasn't until this watch (not the first time I've watched this reaction either) that I noticed they got married in front of the rock where Bright Mac engraved their cutie marks! I love how there's so much detail in this show that you can still notice new things even after several viewings. Like Joshscorcher once put it, "one of the show's shining points is its subtlety. Seriously, the number of times you notice things you didn't before REALLY adds up.".
.I think most people cried because they went into this with the idea that the parents are most likely dead. I am included in this, so when Pear Butter started singing her song i balled because you could feel how strong her love was and in the back of my mind i pretty much knew they were dead in present time. The though of such a pair being dead set me into tears. Showing the tree in the end cemented it. Also this might be a rumor but i heard that in the comics, it says they were killed by Timberwolves. I also heard rumors that two of the cast has flat out confirmed they were dead.
Holy crap, if that's truly how they died then that's awful... It's making me sad to imagine them being desperately torn and slashed, blood everywhere, screaming.... urgh.
Yea and the thought of Grand Pear not being able to apologize to his daughter before they died makes it even more heart wrenching since his guilt and Granny's reaction to him being back both heavily imply that.
Let me make it worse. Grand Pear in the episode shows many symptoms of Parkinson's Disease. His mumbled words, slight tremors, slow movement... It's possible that he wanted to go back to Ponyville after so many years to make amends with his daughter and see her one final time before he died, but now he'll never have the chance.
@@CaptainRhodor do you enjoy our tears? do our emotional suffering please you? if so congraz. you shall be sustained for a long while T^T we don't need more gut punch, this is already a split greater many shots with skrimish to the heart.
It takes alot to make me cry, but this is one of the only two episodes that made me cry (the other one being Crusaders of The Lost Mark.) My mom passed away when I was 16 and it still hurts to this day and its been 10 years. I can't imagine not knowing who my mom was and I just had to rely on stories or pictures. This is in my top 5 favorite MLP episodes and one of my favorites in season 7
I cryed...... 10 times now with every blind react I watch. It is just to beautiful. One of my fav moments is Big Mac asking if he could come back to hear more storys.
I know this is way late but. Something I read on another reaction to this episode is that the weeding was the last time Grand Pear saw his daughter alive but since he knew who they were it suggest that Buttercup had sent letters or even photos of them to him. Maybe she was writing letters every so often to keep him in touch with her family until he never got a letter again and finally worked up enough courage to go see his daughters kids.
Couldn't wait to see your reaction to this one. Never noticed her saying "Yup" before. Good catch. XD Overall a phenomenal episode that hit me in the feels many times.
i've seen this episode 4 freaking times and it still hits me like a bullet train. William Shatner did an amazing job as Grand Pear. this was an amazing reaction dude
What is this season!? And I though 5 and 6 were good. Edit: 23:40 Holy crap, that's intense for this age rating! Also, I don't see how anyone can say that their parents are alive after this episode. All the ponies they talked to who knew them seemed a little sad, at least to begin with, and they all talked about them in the past tense. Plus, why would it be so awkward to bring it up, if they weren't gone?
32:57 - yes, exactly. That's how *I* express my sadness too in this case: just letting it flow through me and embrace the beauty of the whole thing, not just start bawling.
Note that the last time Granpear saw his daughter was when he disowned her. That's gotta leave a big impact in a change of emotion after suddenly receiving a letter informing that your daughter died. I know, they don't say it, but it's heavily implied.
God this episode....i love how they showed us that they were dead through visual clues whenever they were mentioned someone would start to cry and if they aren't dead then where could they be? They aren't the ponies to up and leave their kids I know that for sure!
I like how people keep thinking they're alive, but the thing is...Why wouldn't they take their kids with them if they were drifters? How could they be trapped in another realm that is similar to limbo? All these excuses only make you think that Bright Mac and Pear Butter just abandoned their children...and from this one freakin episode you know damn well they would never do that! So, they're saying that Pear Butter gives birth to Big Mac, sends him to the farm, then AJ, sends her to the farm, then Applebloom, send her to the farm...If anything they'd KEEP their children with them, right?
10:05 "That's a nice touch with Luna still being in the moon." It also gives you a sense for how much she missed out on by being gone all that time, not being around while so many stories like this one were unfolding.
You know, for Mrs. Cake's name being Chiffon Swirl, Chiffon is actually a type of cake! (Along with being a type of fabric) Cupcake could totally be a simple nickname by Mr. Carrot Cake if anything. Cute~ So, when she married him she became Chiffon Cake! It's delicious btw. Carrot cake too mmm 😋
Silly Luffy, you don't 'commit Sudoku,' you play it! Unless you're thinking of Seppuku, but then you usually do that for your own dishonour, not for your parents.' This episode is so beautiful, it makes an impossible Try Not To Cry Challenge.
I was so looking forward to your reaction to this episode, and I was not disappointed. This episode made me cry hard, especially when the song played. I lost my mom last September, so it really hit me hard. Trying to imagine never knowing what my mom was like, having to hear from other people what she was like. This is in my top 5 episodes, easily.
wait- if ponies with horns (Unicorns) put rings on their horns to get married and ponies that are just ponies (Earth-Ponies) get married by planting seeds together, then how do Pegasuses get married-? 😅
this is just for all of y’all who still think they’re somehow still alive given how they talked about their parents in past tense and saying stuff like “if mom and and dad were here they would be so proud”. that’s stuff you would say about people or in this case pony when they’re dead. they obviously can’t say they’re dead cause kids show but with all the hints and the past tense talk they’re gone. if they were alive why would it be so hard to talk about the feud? why would it be so hard for mrs cake and mayor mare to bring up their parents? i see no evidence backing up the fact that they’re not dead other than the fact that they didn’t out right say it. it would be poor writing to make such a emotional episode talk about them as if they were dead and they just suddenly show up alive and well.
7:40 "They have an outhouse for a bathroom." And yet they do have indoor plumbing. Maybe the outhouse is just there for Granny because she's too stuck in her ways and won't use the more modern facilities.
Great reaction. I was really surprised to see that you weren't overwhelmed emotionally from this episode, just going off of some of your reactions in the past. I got tears in my eyes thinking about the episode even days later. Your reaction was the second time I've seen the episode since it aired early, and it still struck my heart just as much. I felt such great happiness from the beautiful love story. Adding to that the fact they were such fantastically kindhearted and nice ponies makes me so much more sad that they are gone.
The main impression this episode gave me was a feeling of "awwww" from how sweet their relationship was, so of course it made me very happy instead of sad. I guess it's just one of those things lol
I hope I didn't come off as harsh, that wasn't my intention, because I really love your reaction videos. I tend to feel everything more deeply and intensely than most people; it is a side effect of being overly empathetic and sensitive. Which makes stuff like The Perfect Pear and the fanfiction My Little Dashie really strike emotional cords. I don't mean to imply I felt sad the entire episode, quite the opposite. I found the episode fantastically beautiful, and lovely. The romance and love between Bright Mac and Pear Butter was completely enamoring, and it brought tears of happiness, but it also has a bit of sadness with them as well because they are gone. I apologize for writing a novel length response.
I know by now this is old news, but in case you didn't know Lauren Faust herself that they are dead. In fact, they were meant to be dead from the very start.
For each reaction I go through, I seem to get more and more emotional. And heck, even if you didn't cry out, I did see you get emotional enough. The mood of this whole thing pretty much solidifies the fact that they are dead. Though, should they go ahead and explain how they died, they sure have a lot of fanfics to choose from. ;)
Grand Pear tearing up and talking to the apple siblings made me drop a few tears. Mostly because family is something very precious to me and I come from a big one myself.
This episode just makes me always tear up and tugs at my heart. The Romeo and Juliet aspect of the parents love story was beautiful and the song was amazing. It really is a song that anyone in love can relate to. And the fact that they subtly say their parents are no longer there with them. It really tugs the heart when you realize Grand Pear never got to apologize to his daughter for leaving her during the wedding. Granny clearly holds this against him for years until the end of the episode. She let go of her hatred for Buttercup the moment she chose to be an apple, giving her the comfort of the Apple's home. It's great seeing how different the Pear's family is to the Apple's family
People keep asking about the trees twisting. It is possible. My yard has an Oak and Pine growing together; almost as one tree. Trees also have been know to grow around things. In fact there are cases where people have left things like bikes against the tree and forgot about them; when they came by the old tree again after many years, the object was almost completely engulfed by the tree.
It's kinda funny, the first time I saw this it didn't affect me at all, but pretty much on every rewatch it's been like clockwork: as soon as Gran Pear says "I'm so sorry" my eyes start getting ever so slightly moist and I do this kind of stiffled sniffly-smile, and another wave hits at the very end with the camera panning away to Pear Butter's song. I think Shatner's acting and the music pretty much made this episode for me, in the end.
I’m surprised not many people realize how similar this is to Romeo and Juliet. Two rival families, one of each side falling in love with the other and having a secret wedding to seal their love. This is still one of my favorite episodes a year later jhhhhhhhhhhhh-
Over 30 viewings so far. The part that always chokes me up is the deep remorse and regrets of Grand 🍐 and the true beauty of the relationship between the two parents.
26:32 "The one thing I do wonder is... what happened next?" Although it's virtually certain that AJ's parents met an untimely death, we can take some comfort in knowing that they must have had at least a few good years together, going by the age difference between AB and her two older siblings.
At the 2016 Middle Equestrian Convention in Poland, My Little Pony character designer Kora Kosicka stated in response to a fan question that Applejack's parents are dead.
Grand Pear is voice by William Shatner Pear Butter voiced by Felicia Day Bright Mac is voiced by Bill Newton Burnt Oak is voice by Bill Mondy Twilight is now a background pony since there is a lack of Twilight's Focus Episode in Season 7. Parent of Order: Twilight, Pinkie Pie, Rarity, Fluttershy, Rainbow Dash, and Applejack
I love this episode! It is more then likely my second favorite episode of the series, my favorite being Amending Fences. (Amending Fences just hit me on a personal level). This kind of story isn't new, it basically is Romeo and Juliet. Star crossed lovers whose family can't stand each other. But it's just a plot point that may be so cliche it just works on so many levels. And for MLP FIM to blow this kind of plot out of the water for me and make it amazing; well that is just great to see. It made me cry so much the first time I had watched it, and even watching it now still gets me teary eyed/and even crying. The Apple parents are definitely dead, the hints before this episode with the series, the hints in this episode, plus the line they left something to remember them by, that just sells it to me. Plus everyone acted in a way that you would if someone you cared for was dead, yeah there's no denying it. Talking about old times, and the like. I can't see anyone having any doubt about them being gone after this episode. (Unless some people are just in denial). Such an amazing episode, love it so much! Great reaction and can't wait for more
I loved the relationship between buttercup and bright mac, they were almost as cute as Trixie and Starlight! (Seriously I ship those two so hard they are adorable!!!)
Another special episode come and gone and my goodness this one is beautifully written! I love Bright Mac and Buttercup, they are wonderful characters(they are the sweetest little pony couple I ever did see) and I respect how their story was revealed to us in this fashion. Another fantastic episode from S7 and I'm looking forward to what's next!
Honest to god, nothing in this season hurt me quite like seeing Grandpear’s grief. That was the last time he saw his daughter. He never got to make amends, and he had to carry that guilt for the rest of his life. I can’t imagine how terrible it would feel for a loved one to die before you can make amends with them over whatever the feud was...
29:39 "I think I do know the reason why we were never given... any specifics on what might have happened *after* they got married... I think it's because nobody _needs_ to know." Indeed. It's more far more important to know how someone lived than to know how they died.
Also their relationship is more like 'Hartfields and Macoys!' both families hated each other but the daughter of the Macoys ran off and married a Hartfield! XD
Speaking of headcanons, here's one about Pear Butter and Grand Pear's interactions (or lack thereof) until Grand Pear moved back to Ponyville: fav.me/dbdvcxh Dr. Wolf has also dubbed it. ;w;
7:00 "Trigger alert! Trigger alert! Non-apple product!" Funny, I would have thought that AJ would be the_least_ likely of the mane six to be triggered by anything. :)

God this episode....i love how they showed us that they were dead through visual clues whenever they were mentioned someone would start to cry and if they aren't dead then where could they be? They aren't the ponies to up and leave their kids I know that for sure!
Yeah, Mrs Cake's initial body language in particular was pretty telling.
10:05 "That's a nice touch with Luna still being in the moon."
It also gives you a sense for how much she missed out on by being gone all that time, not being around while so many stories like this one were unfolding.
You know, for Mrs. Cake's name being Chiffon Swirl, Chiffon is actually a type of cake! (Along with being a type of fabric)
Cupcake could totally be a simple nickname by Mr. Carrot Cake if anything. Cute~ So, when she married him she became Chiffon Cake!
It's delicious btw. Carrot cake too mmm 😋
Silly Luffy, you don't 'commit Sudoku,' you play it!
Unless you're thinking of Seppuku, but then you usually do that for your own dishonour, not for your parents.'
This episode is so beautiful, it makes an impossible Try Not To Cry Challenge.
Using sudoku instead of seppuku is a meme lol
I'm not up on memes, but I did figure you were playing for laughs.
this is just for all of y’all who still think they’re somehow still alive
given how they talked about their parents in past tense and saying stuff like “if mom and and dad were here they would be so proud”. that’s stuff you would say about people or in this case pony when they’re dead.
they obviously can’t say they’re dead cause kids show but with all the hints and the past tense talk they’re gone.
if they were alive
why would it be so hard to talk about the feud?
why would it be so hard for mrs cake and mayor mare to bring up their parents?
i see no evidence backing up the fact that they’re not dead other than the fact that they didn’t out right say it.
it would be poor writing to make such a emotional episode talk about them as if they were dead and they just suddenly show up alive and well.
This episode made me cry more then any other episode
The Saddest Part Is The Last Memory Of Grand Pear Is Being Disowned! That Got Me Grand Pear Might Die With Regret!
7:40 "They have an outhouse for a bathroom."
And yet they do have indoor plumbing. Maybe the outhouse is just there for Granny because she's too stuck in her ways and won't use the more modern facilities.
Must be about the tenth time I'm watching this. Yet it still makes me legit cry. That is quite an accomplishment.
This is a great episode. It's great learning about Applejacks' parents. The setup is interesting. The ending is fantastic.
Its so adorable how mutually aware they are of how strongly they feel for each other.
Ah Buttercup, the most adorable pony to ever exist.
I saw this episode a few dozen times now and I just noticed AJ has her hair in the same style as her mom. Nice touch
I know by now this is old news, but in case you didn't know Lauren Faust herself that they are dead. In fact, they were meant to be dead from the very start.
Yep, I've known they're dead since season 3.
The show has tried to hint it several times, but certain fans were always very stubborn in their denial.
Gotcha! Yeah that was always something that kinda annoyed me. At least it's resolved now and gosh darn, years later this episode still makes me cry.
For each reaction I go through, I seem to get more and more emotional. And heck, even if you didn't cry out, I did see you get emotional enough.
The mood of this whole thing pretty much solidifies the fact that they are dead.
Though, should they go ahead and explain how they died, they sure have a lot of fanfics to choose from. ;)
Also, they specifically stated the tree was something to remember the parents by. If that doesn't mean they're dead...
you and RarityDash said the same damn thing when Apple Bloom brought home the pear jam, that is freaking funny, almost died from that
The episode the fandom wanted, but was never ready for
Still waiting on that episode with the feud with the bears.
Didn't want to be over hyped *proceeds to hype himself up* Love you man XD
I gave a moment of a silence at the end of this reaction for Applejack, Applebloom, and Big Macintosh's parents. Rest in Peace.
for me
when they go back to talk to grand pear
always brings me to tears
that is if the song hasnt already done me in
It's kinda funny, the first time I saw this it didn't affect me at all, but pretty much on every rewatch it's been like clockwork: as soon as Gran Pear says "I'm so sorry" my eyes start getting ever so slightly moist and I do this kind of stiffled sniffly-smile, and another wave hits at the very end with the camera panning away to Pear Butter's song. I think Shatner's acting and the music pretty much made this episode for me, in the end.
When I first learned that Grand Pear was voiced by William Shatner, I didn't believe it at first.
I’m surprised not many people realize how similar this is to Romeo and Juliet.
Two rival families, one of each side falling in love with the other and having a secret wedding to seal their love.
This is still one of my favorite episodes a year later jhhhhhhhhhhhh-
And now also Read Dead Redemption 2.
16:18 "She is really cute as well."
Looks like Windy Whistles has some competition in the attractive mom department!
I'm still fangirling that my profile pic is in your room
This episode made me cry my eyes out
Because it was so touching
Wait... Processing... APPLEJACK'S HAT!!!!
I have a vague recollection of Applejack having an entire cupboard filled with hats, but I can't remember which episode.
Over 30 viewings so far. The part that always chokes me up is the deep remorse and regrets of Grand 🍐 and the true beauty of the relationship between the two parents.
One of the best episodes by my side...
...just beautiful❤❤❤
26:32 "The one thing I do wonder is... what happened next?"
Although it's virtually certain that AJ's parents met an untimely death, we can take some comfort in knowing that they must have had at least a few good years together, going by the age difference between AB and her two older siblings.
At the 2016 Middle Equestrian Convention in Poland, My Little Pony character designer Kora Kosicka stated in response to a fan question that Applejack's parents are dead.
Grand Pear is voice by William Shatner
Pear Butter voiced by Felicia Day
Bright Mac is voiced by Bill Newton
Burnt Oak is voice by Bill Mondy
Twilight is now a background pony since there is a lack of Twilight's Focus Episode in Season 7.
Parent of Order: Twilight, Pinkie Pie, Rarity, Fluttershy, Rainbow Dash, and Applejack
The episode where EVERY brony and pegasister cried...
I sure did.
The worst part is the implication that the last time he saw his daughter alive is when he was disowning her
12:51 Sam Elliot pony aren't you supposed to be helping Ghost Rider pony???
Well, either that or he´s ordering a sarsaparilla in a bowling-alley XD
this episode never fails in making me cry
Maud Pie smiling, Fluttercord the Episode, and now this are giving the cheeks one heck of a workout.
I feel really sorry for the next episode having to follow after this one.
ITS LIQUID PRIDE
at 13:30..just wow...
"Hey! In record time you made her wet."
JUST......LOOOOOOOL
I wish we get more back story of Discord parents.
19:48 YES IT IS!!! I cry every time! 😢
I also love that big mac is dating sugarbelle and she kind of has a similar look to his mom, some may think that's creepy but I find it sweet
Never could have guessed that it was Shatner if it weren't for the credits.
I think the guilt Grand Pear feels made him the nice pony he is at the start of the episode.
No, this is MLP. The parents didn't die.
They were destroyed.
The trees were from the wedding seeds. When they planted their love.
What is this? Two 6 Stars episode in a row? xD
Good reaction man
Honest to god, nothing in this season hurt me quite like seeing Grandpear’s grief. That was the last time he saw his daughter. He never got to make amends, and he had to carry that guilt for the rest of his life. I can’t imagine how terrible it would feel for a loved one to die before you can make amends with them over whatever the feud was...
This family war reminds me 3 chapter from Read Dead Redemption 2. Also there were both families and we had Romeo and Juliet.
I'm subbing to you for many reasons. but one of those reasons is because of that Offspring beanie. You have good taste my good sir. XD
29:39 "I think I do know the reason why we were never given... any specifics on what might have happened *after* they got married... I think it's because nobody _needs_ to know."
Indeed. It's more far more important to know how someone lived than to know how they died.
Also their relationship is more like 'Hartfields and Macoys!' both families hated each other but the daughter of the Macoys ran off and married a Hartfield! XD
This episode still makes me cry.
10:10 - 10:16 I enjoyed "Over a barrel" it was such a nice Season 1 episode.
11:34 my face when I get no brownies
Speaking of headcanons, here's one about Pear Butter and Grand Pear's interactions (or lack thereof) until Grand Pear moved back to Ponyville: fav.me/dbdvcxh
Dr. Wolf has also dubbed it. ;w;
7:00 "Trigger alert! Trigger alert! Non-apple product!"
Funny, I would have thought that AJ would be the_least_ likely of the mane six to be triggered by anything. :)
