They had evidence of what it was, but couldn't figure it out for thousands of years.... then we did discover it, about a hundred years ago.

It's interesting that the two boundaries of our knowledge are singularities. Both those in a black hole, and the one at the Big Bang.
What's even cooler - once you cross event horizon - singularity is not a point in space but event in inevitable future. If you want to escape singularity - you'd need to move back in time, which is impossible. So when you reach singularity - you arrive to the end of time.
Of course you do cause you're dead if you go into a black hole, sphagettified. Thus the only way you exist if you go back in time before you die.@@bensky2760

In a way it does make sense. What good is a universe if it cannot reproduce another universe.
If, according to Prof. Hawking, black holes can "evaporate" away, does that not imply that they can lose mass from within the event horizon (E.H.)? If molecules at the event horizon can be torn apart, so that part of the molecule is absorbed, while part of it appears as radiation from the black hole, that does not suggest to me that anything has crossed from inside the E.H. to the region outside of it - yet that must surely happen if the black hole can lose mass. Have I misunderstood that?
If an observer outside of a Black Hole would see objects reaching the E.H, but never falling into it, because time stops for them from the perspective of the observer, would that not mean that we should eternally 'see' everything that has ever fallen into the black hole? If this is the case, would we only lose sight of such an object when the E.H. eclipses it due to expanding as the black hole grows because of the accumulation of ever more mass?
the leakage from a black hole seems to infer a loss of information... this is has a high probability being radiation..
But.. it could in theory also be a few other options: a known particle, a known but unmeasurable field, a known particle in an unknown state, and unknown particcle, an unknown field.
Or simpler : the leakage or radiation/loss of information is a temporal effect. An indirect effect of a continous change of state. Where it looks and calculates like evaporation but within a timeless space/time there is no time for evaporation.
Hawking posits that black holes can lose mass through emitting “hawking” radiation, although at a pace so slow that it will take 100s of billions if not trillions of years for them to evaporate. And in respect to the second question we would simply see the objects captured by the black hole appear to gradually dim and eventually fade out of existence as they pass the event horizon , rather than actually crossing the threshold from our perspective
@@wallyslow We know the equivalece between mass and energy - e=mc^2, but is there an equivalence between mass and "information"? After all, we're talking about loss of mass from a BH, which you explain as a loss of "information", but I frankly don't understand what that means. You say it infers a radiation, but when an antenna radiates, does it lose mass? The problem I have is that somehow, mass is lost from the BH, through the Event Horizon, to the universe outside the BH, and mass moving through the EH in that direction is contrary to what I've been given to understand about BHs.
Not that any of this actually matters to you and me, of course - and I don't suppose I will ever understand it - I don't have enough life ahead of me to 'get' it. Maybe future generations will understand it, as the current one understands Relativity - but mine won't.

Einstein came up w the math problem that implied black holes in the 30s I think & he didn't even think they really existed for a long time. You even mention him right after saying that. This stiff is super interesting by itself, you don't have to exaggerate. Plus once you say something like that, it throws into question how truthful anything else you say might be.

It makes more sense when you realize that different types of black holes are more or less firmly sealed Dyson spheres, where the inside topology might be any scale compared to the outward sppearsnce
And another confusing thing.... information cannot be lost but what if an electron and it's antimatter counterpart a positron touch....they're instantaneously anighalated right? As in ceasing to exist?
No, A positron and a electron are just positively charged and negatively charged. They are not matter and matter. They do not annihilate themselves. I hope that helped

There doesn’t seem to be a place inside a black hole. Not sure why we would posit that we live inside a singular non-place. Perhaps a better title would have been, “We live outside a bunch of black holes.”
There are many black holes in our universe, so if the universe was in a black hole, there would be black holes within black holes - and that posits a conundrum!
The black hole is not the singularity, it is the effect caused by the singularity. It is what the observer sees outside the even horizon, which is just some arbitrary distance from the singularity determined by the mass of that singularity. There is space inside the black hole, we just can't observe it because no photons can escape the event horizon.

Just because a theory/hypothesis conveniently cleans up issues with other theories is in no way a validation but should simply be considered a invalidation of said original theory. But.... People get their emotions invested in their hypothesis causing behaviors such as denial rather than the loss of their emotional investment. This is where such actions are better appropriate in religion as they completely invalidate the standard of the scientific method of which all hypotheses and theories should be judged. Making them the wrong material for science communicators

If you take the Schwarzschild radius of a black hole with the estimated mass of the observable universe you get a size approx the size of the observable universe.

Is there a theory of gravity that allows for its force to become *_infinite_* - given that we don't fully understand what it is or how it works? Wouldn't that rule out the possibility of gravity particles?
Are you asking if gravity is relative? surely...to measure something is to measure it against something..thus those relate..hence it's relativity. if we cannot measure it ...then is possiblity an infinite (unmeasurable). So yes you could be wrong and also no you could be right.
@@wallyslow Well, I don't understand how anything can be infinite _relative_ to something else - but, though I've never visited a black hole - even mathematically - my belief is that the theory states that the density of matter at the centre is infinite, which I think means that gravity at that point is infinite, presumably getting less as you move away from the singularity towards the Event Horizon and beyond. What I was asking is whether gravity *_can_* become infinite. Not all measurement scales extend to infinity - for example, absolute zero temperature is a finite number - it's not infinitely cold.

This is my favorite theory. If we are living inside a black hole, the expansion of the universe could be explained by the increase of the size of the black hole consuming more material. What happens with Hawking radiation? Does the universe shrink?

Truly, we have no idea what is really inside a black hole. We believe there’s a singularity only because that’s what the maths says. Doubtful that we will ever fully know what is inside a literal puncture in space and time.
We aren't really here every atom is 99.9996% Empty space.
Maybe black holes are new universes and dark matter and vacuum is dark energy and it's about zillion universes like atoms and maybe we live in one black hole in our universe is one big empty space and it's our hole it's 2d and inside is 3d universes and it's 4d

No, don’t be silly. We are a speck of dust under someone or something’s fingernail. You so no? How do you know? We maybe under a rock in some other universe. Who know? And how do we knows there are not countless universes under our fingernails? The point is is it doesn’t really matter. This is our reality. What ever it may be.
Being in a black hole makes more sense to me than any other theory about our universe. It would also explain the dark energy/dark matter enigma astronomers are still currently having trouble tryna explain.
