Dammit Jazza you made me cry happy tears. I'm four years late to this but I needed it. "It's not the few pieces or artworks of theirs you have seen that makes them exceptional and talented, it's the thousands that you haven't." I needed that. I really needed that. Sometimes when I look at artists whose work I love, I don't see them as people. I see them as some sort of artistic god that was born into this world with a skill set I could never attain, some divine gift that only a handful of mortals are blessed with, but that's not true, nor is it fair to them. I am sure each one of them sweat and maybe even cried over pieces that just didn't come out just right but they never gave up on their dreams - it's not fair to take that hard work and perseverance from them by assuming they just...put a pencil to paper (or stylus to screen) and draw like a 3-D printer, well, prints: line by line of flawlessness until a final product is there for everyone to see. No, they made mistakes, you're so right. Hundreds upon hundreds of mistakes but they kept going and pushed through, learned from them (or got help/direction), and became the artists they are today. So there is hope for artists out there like me who like what they do but are always feeling like what they WANT to do is just out of reach. So thanks, Jazza. Thank you for reminding me to stop being so hard on myself, and to take chances, make mistakes, and keep pushing forward. Godspeed.

And with one comment you have become my favorite RUclipsr. Literally have just made me stop looking at blank paper in frustration. The whole video is awesome but your very last comment spoke to me as an artist to the core. Inspired me to just draw even tho I have been looking at the paper for over week and couldn't think of what to draw. Thank you for finally letting me knowing what to draw...nothing as long as I am drawing
The answer is so much simpler than this. Draw a cube, a sphere and or a cylinder. If you don't know what to draw, do that. Pick one, and shut down your mind, stop thinking, and draw your first line, then as soon as you have the first line down, start thinking again, and think really hard about how you can make this cube, box or sphere look as good as humanly possible for you. As soon as you've done that, just go ahead and draw anything, first thing that pops to mind, draw it, first idea that comes to mind, do it, don't think, just do. Fail miserably, sure, but do anyways. You were spot on in the video that the reason for this is the high expectation, but that's not all the reason, that's just one of the reasons. People very rarely don't know what to draw, people usually have something that they want to draw, they just know they can't draw it, people who are very good at drawing and know themselves capable of drawing just about anything, those people rarely find themselves wondering what to draw, they might however get bogged down a lot more in how to draw it different than last time. So, one thing you could always draw is that thing you know you want to draw and also know you can't draw, setting out to just go ahead and fail, and fail hard, that's indeed a very powerful way to start, expect failure, but try your best anyways. But there's another lurking secret problem that many people don't know about, it's this barrier of entry that gets created when you think too big and I'm not just talking "draw complicated human body, yes!" no I'm also talking "draw 30 boxes!" or "draw one face" I mean sure if you've drawn tons of faces and it's easy for you then yeah, you're thinking small, but if you haven't, then it's big, and you subconsciously know that you can't do it, you subconsciously know that you are inevitably going to fail, so expect the failure, hope for success and seek out the unknown. The unknown is a beautiful thing, because when you venture into the unknown you stop subconsciously knowing whether or not you'll fail, you can't know the unknown after all. Try drawing the exact same thing in a different way using different techniques, what's gonna happen? No one knows. That's where improvement really happens. Some people might need to think so small that they only set out to draw "3 lines" or "triangle" (yes, I'M GONNA DRAW A MOTHERFUCKING TRIANGLE BITCHES! STOP ME IF YOU CAN!) as small as it takes to get them to just start. Although while there is wisdom is this, there's more wisdom in that the reason they are not drawing is because they are too busy thinking, stop thinking and just fucking do it, that's all it really takes.
Leen the Queen Right? hehe. Well when I said it was simpler what I was really thinking was: Style comes naturally if you don't think about it and just keep drawing. Then I went on to explain how and why that is, and that became like a page in a book.
draw something momdain.... brain: Scissors me: *draws scissors* mmmmmmmmhhh *add flames to it: brain: oh oh me: *evil laugh* *5 hours later* me: I GOT A SCISSORS WITH FLAMES, BLOOD, SUNRISE BACK ROUND, WITH A SEXY SIDE KICK. brain: i knew where this was going, i tried to stop you, but you were in that phase, and i was doomed to fail............ good job.
I really appreciate not only your tutorials dealing with the technical aspects of drawing, but also your insight into the psychological hurdles artists must overcome.
I am 14 and I drew my WHOLE LIFE and I even feel like my art isn’t that Great..So Ik how it feels and I am glad Jazza is helping you with your troubles!! (Ps I also watch Jazza a whole lot XD)
when i know what to draw: alright get my sketchbook get my pencil get my everything i am ready when i dont know what to draw: tries to draw a mouse but it ends up looking like a turd
Before I wanted to be a fashion designer before.....I'm only 10. But know I want to be an artist because I'm really good at drawing, and I really have artist block most of the time I dont know why, but it just happens and that's why I am watching this right now. But I will try to do my best to be one of the best artists in the world😊❤✏
This is me in a nutshell. 4yo me really wanted to be a fashion designer, I also later had that idea when I was 8, but then my art improved and I decided I wanted to become an artist.
When I don't know what to draw I think "Noun, Verb, Adjectives" For example Dice run green cartoony, so a green cartoony dice running, draw that and then do another one like "girl swimming chibi dyed" or a chibi girl with dyed hair and she's swimming. You can even add "with". Chibi dyed hair gi l is swimming WITH her dog.
I have a picture of jazza in my camera roll, then when I get sad I look a him a smile! He is awesome, his smile warms me. He feels like a brother. And I just want to say that him has helped me with so much.
Jazza: and all you need to be creative is just draw anything it does not matter as long as you don’t leave it blank. Me: *draws tiny line* Also me: yes!!!! I’m creative now!
Your so Inspiring! I'm not the best artist yet BUT just recently I've found my cartoon style! And always looking to improve! I've make art vids (mostly drawling) and I want to show other people my passion for drawling! Thx so much for the advice and ideas!
CiaoJazza I've turned 50 and suddenly finally started drawing. The book about right hemisphere drawing I always wanted to get, I suddenly discovered in my bookshelf where it has been hiding the last 17(!!) years! OK, I started, by the book. And my four test drawings were much too good!!! I couldn't believe what I had drawn! Yeyyey!! I was over the moon, bragging, showing off ... - but where to go from here? I ONLY wanted to LEARN drawing. NO other goals. But how to top that initial zero to 100 "progress"? I'm actually going the opposite direction! I'd discovered I can do perfect circles. I can't anymore. And finally I am totally paralised. I buy scetchbook after scetchbook, so I don't have to waste the first one on my crises, but with each new one, I'm still CONFRONTED WITH MYSELF the moment I want to begin. That's the hardest! Even doodling scribbling etc is impossible. BUTBUTBUT ... =) I found a little remedy: »»NEWSPAPERS«« Ha-haa! ha--ha-hàaa! On newspapers the scribbling works again. Exercises too. The copying of pictures still won't go. There I'm still stuck stuckstuck ... But honestly, I specially buy newspapers now, with few advertisements. And old cheap softback books: tiptop for exercising. It's as if it contains s.one else's story I'm not confronted with ME so much ...
The reason why I think of you as one of the "best" artists, is because you don't only create your own content: you aspire others to create content too! In a way, you could say that you create artists... :)
Your art skills are brilliant but, your psychologist skills are extraordinary. You convey inspiration and open doors and lead folk to their promised lands of creativity from their imprisonment minds. Very awe inspiring and impressive genius
What I do is look around and find three objects. Then I combine them. Say I see a pair of scissors, a tissue box, and a toy car. I would draw a tissue box driving a car and getting attacked by scissors. Or I ask my brother for two adjectives and a noun. He might say giant, scary, orange. So that's what I'd draw. That's just how I do it.
I do get the point of what you're saying, but it's kind of annoying [as you yourself point out]. How do I do the thing? "Oh, well, you just do the thing and it happens." Yeah, but what do I do to START doing the thing? "You do the thing, and then you've started the thing." JUST TELL ME HOW TO DO THE THING! "JUST! DO! THE THING! IT'S NOT DIFFICULT- JUST DO THE THING!"
My friends and classmates often look at my drawings and criticise them. Sometimes I'm like "Alright, I'll do it better next time." But when I draw to have fun and not to spot mistakes and correct them I don't really want any criticism at all...
I've been working on step two actually. I have a shitty part time job in retail. Best way to fight boredom and exercise my imagination? Sticky notes and coworkers. This is good for them too. I ask them to name two animals and draw little sketches of what they could look like combined. So far I've done Flamencolephants, Girrfoxes, Roachowls, Monkats, Dodo Horses, Ant eater Squirrels, and lots of other weird things. Good or bad it gets us all talking and being creative.
Thanks Jazza... You've actually inspired me to start drawing again. I used to draw a lot from like 12-16 but I stopped because I hated how it looked close to the same as when I started & how no matter how many other people my age I saw that were drawing for just as long it would always be better than mine. So I'm now 23 & I only started drawing again the day before last. I started getting into the story time animators & saw you collaborating so I checked out your channel. I have been obsessed since my birthday, which was about a week ago, especially your character design sessions. I kept watching your creative process & kept thinking "I would've done it this way" (not to say you're doing anything wrong, I'm just saying that, because I'm a different person with different life experience & different preferences, I would take the same idea & execute it in a way that makes an entirely different piece). Then I noticed how you simplify things like hair in ways I never did before & it just clicked. I never liked my art because I tried so hard to conform to the styles of my favorite anime & manga. I love how it feels to draw that style of body type, eyes & clothing but proportions & hair were absolutely killing me. Plus, much of the anime style shading relies on color or a special sticky stuff that you're supposed to cut to shape & stick on the piece that I couldn't buy & that means that when I tried to use what I learned in art class (cross-hatching & such) I felt like a failure because it looked so different than what I wanted. When I watch you I realized that none of that matters. My style can be mine & completely unique. If I wanna use cross hatching or draw my girls hands in a way that they don't look like they're all professional pianists, I CAN. You do so many styles & I've seen you borrow a bit from your usual comic book style when doing something outside of it & ya know what? It always looks amazing. I decided to try the certain things you do like drawing thicker locks of hair & doing proportions that make sense to me. I love her! She's no where near like yours but... she's not just my idea, she's a drawing & I love the way it came out. & ya know what the best part is? the icing on the cake? After I doodled my first character in years I realized something. I'm not trying to impress anyone anymore. I used to show my family everything I drew & fish for approval where I knew none would come. But that time, I drew just because I wanted to see what I was thinking about live on the paper. That's it. I just wanted the girl I saw in my head to be a real drawing. I did end up showing my boyfriend & he said it was great. That he had no idea I could do something like that. Then, I wanted to draw again yesterday but didn't know what so I watched one of your design sessions & made a game. I watched up till you had your parameters set by the twitch chat & paused. I drew my own half-spider whore & she's beautiful. I even made her trans which actually started as "These breasts just don't suit this body" but I LOVE this character now just how she is! I'm glad I wasn't able to draw breasts in that moment because my mythical transgender spider whore is amazing. I feel much better about myself because I can & do draw again. So thank you. Thank you for being the push that got this stone rolling again. I've gathered quite a bit of moss in these 8 years but I'm just glad to have some momentum. I love you Jazza.
That hit the spot! I think now I know for sure why I fear the white paper - expectations. I think I've always knew but never looked at the problem in the eyes. Or at least not for too long. P.S. One trick I use sometimes is to draw on an old, torn piece of paper. Probably with something already written on it. Because it doesn't look that special.
I watched this and then ended up sitting down and staring at a blank sheet of paper.

Although while there is wisdom is this, there's more wisdom in that the reason they are not drawing is because they are too busy thinking, stop thinking and just fucking do it, that's all it really takes.
that's good,
thanks for the additional knowledge.
You cant just automaticlly clear your mind..
cuppy cake Of course it takes willpower but it is possible... what makes it not possible is that you THINK it's impossible, get it?
Cestarian Inhabitant ITS SO MUCH SIMPLER!!!
*writes a book*
Leen the Queen Right? hehe.
Well when I said it was simpler what I was really thinking was: Style comes naturally if you don't think about it and just keep drawing.
Then I went on to explain how and why that is, and that became like a page in a book.
draw something momdain....
brain: Scissors

This video is still to this day includes one of the most inspirational pieces of advice I have ever been given.
I really appreciate not only your tutorials dealing with the technical aspects of drawing, but also your insight into the psychological hurdles artists must overcome.

Before I wanted to be a fashion designer before.....I'm only 10.
But know I want to be an artist because I'm really good at drawing, and I really have artist block most of the time I dont know why, but it just happens and that's why I am watching this right now. But I will try to do my best to be one of the best artists in the world😊❤✏
Did you draw your profile pic?
This is me in a nutshell. 4yo me really wanted to be a fashion designer, I also later had that idea when I was 8, but then my art improved and I decided I wanted to become an artist.
I'm in love with your personality and videos! Baylee jay sent me and I'm subscribing! These tips will help me with my art. :)

+Toby v1.6 a big bowl of noodlesoup
+Robin Vinke haha
When I don't know what to draw I think "Noun, Verb, Adjectives" For example Dice run green cartoony, so a green cartoony dice running, draw that and then do another one like "girl swimming chibi dyed" or a chibi girl with dyed hair and she's swimming. You can even add "with". Chibi dyed hair gi l is swimming WITH her dog.
girl*
Berucrat this is really good but idea this should be something jazza does. He asks his twich chat... They pick...he draws...cool series maybe
I see it in my head I just can’t put it on paper

Me: *draws tiny line*
Also me: yes!!!! I’m creative now!

"I have achieved artistry!"
This is what the people that say ‘I can’t even draw a stick figure’ need.
Your so Inspiring! I'm not the best artist yet BUT just recently I've found my cartoon style! And always looking to improve! I've make art vids (mostly drawling) and I want to show other people my passion for drawling! Thx so much for the advice and ideas!
LPS kitKAT huh I like to "drawl" too!
CiaoJazza
I've turned 50 and suddenly finally started drawing.
I found a little remedy: »»NEWSPAPERS««
Ha-haa! ha--ha-hàaa!
Alexandra Wimmer I can't even read that if I wanted too 😂
Good job!!! Congrats for starting art and persevering!!
Are you italian?
I can't read that not at all
My brain is pulling me away from reading it
I tried to draw a pair of scissors, but accidentally leaked a gen 8 pokemon.

This thread is getting weird XD
***** Absolutely not :P He deserves tons of love!
how is this so inspirational? like i had a creativity block for a long time, and now i just wanna draw
Since when did Jazza became so Inspirational😢😢😢.....Wonderful,,,👏👏👏
Am I the only one that really wants Jazza to draw a post apocalyptic nazi gummy bear?
Yes please do that.
The reason why I think of you as one of the "best" artists, is because you don't only create your own content: you aspire others to create content too! In a way, you could say that you create artists... :)
Shit write a book dude.
Seth lol he has !😄
omg I must find this book😍
Chocopop81 MSP what's it called
Seth lol o
Seth lol I'd grab that book.
art block is my default, and every once in a while i come out of it very briefly

Ooooorrr... You could always watch Shia LeBouf's "Just do It". If that doesn't get you moving, you're a lost case.
Kappa123.
This video might as well be that,
+TheDinis Always works for me.
+TheDinis If someone told me straight up to ' Just do it' I'd slap them into tomorrow.
+Dawn B I feel the same way.
Your art skills are brilliant but, your psychologist skills are extraordinary. You convey inspiration and open doors and lead folk to their promised lands of creativity from their imprisonment minds. Very awe inspiring and impressive genius
WOW! That speech in the beginning actully makes me gonna go make some animations :D I thought of don't doing it first :/
+Waffle Gaming "being bad at something is the first step to being kinda good at something" Jake the dog.
Ross Freeman Genius!
Thanks!
Ana Paula Pedro. I did that and my brother said crazy flying ant.
Jazza, you are terrific! I hang on your every video. You are helping me grow as an artist. TY. :)
I do get the point of what you're saying, but it's kind of annoying [as you yourself point out].
How do I do the thing?
"Oh, well, you just do the thing and it happens."
Yeah, but what do I do to START doing the thing?
"You do the thing, and then you've started the thing."
JUST TELL ME HOW TO DO THE THING!
"JUST! DO! THE THING! IT'S NOT DIFFICULT- JUST DO THE THING!"
Buy a book for absolute beginners, put enough efforts to learn and practice.
My friends and classmates often look at my drawings and criticise them. Sometimes I'm like "Alright, I'll do it better next time." But when I draw to have fun and not to spot mistakes and correct them I don't really want any criticism at all...
Don’t worry my dude I get that too
You look like a much younger Gordon Ramsey jazza
Great. Now I want to animate a post-apocalyptic nazi gummy-bear XD
+.Co Bros His left arm got eaten by a mutant five year old.

Scroer Uee yep
I love you Jazza.
go animate, but don't use GoAnimate
Ha ha exactly
That is exactly what I thought!
Paused at 3:25... Motivational videos come with motivational faces.

Bayle Jae sent me here , and I am in love already
+LPS Blue Studios naaaaw thanks!
Another tip that works for me, instead of thinking "what should i draw/paint/etc." just think of random stuff and draw them.
Oh look it's Jazza I'll draw that
TL; DW: JUST DO IT! Don't let your dreams be dreams!
