John Brancy took the Media prize in the 2017 Hans Gabor Belvedere International Singing Competition. This year it was held in Moscow, Russia. See John perform "Ja vas lyublyu" from Tchaikovsky's opera Pique Dame.

Studied this role myself for several years before I ran out of talent and left my operatic aspirations behind. Lol that last word in the aria is such a b**ch! You’ve just sung your lungs out for 5 minutes, and then you have to hold that last word an interminable length of time, and do a perfect Mesa di voce from piano to fortissimo and back, AND hold that last syllable several more beats. And the tempo here didn’t do you any favors!!
Love your voice, John, and what you’re doing with it. Keep singing lyrically and emphasizing beauty over power. Be careful of the large American houses and the desire for baritones (and all voices, really) to constantly be bigger, darker, more powerful. Would love to see you as Yeletsky, Marcello, Rodrigo, Billy Budd, Zurga, Silvio, etc and your work in art songs and leid is fantastic!

I like aspects of his vocal performance better than Dmitri. His dynamics and acting are more interesting. He is less covered sounding all the time. Of course the piece itself is amazing. Never hurts.

Magnificent voice, extraordinary technique, deep understanding of the music and text (only very occasional imperfection in the pronounciation). Sensational interpretation of one of the most difficult arias for the baritone. Sherrill Milnes still does not have a successor. You may become the one! Very good singing john! Dimitri horovskys is vgd/ excellent! But Russian Pavel Lisitian is my favourite born 1904 died 2011 people please listen on RUclips i promise you won't regret! He may not have the looks of Dimitri an john! Singing this same song!!! In 1964 Excellent
