Which is why I've listened to stuff off this album a lot over the last couple of months. I've been so pissed off at everything. I loved the album beforehand, but now it just speaks to me so much more.
It's more of the concept itself I appreciate. They had a pretty good struggle through the making of this album, almost fatal. I don't see this as a album they tried their best at, just letting out some aggression. Folks should realize too, one of the most legendary albums ever was Garage Days. And it had way worse quality.
Those of you who say St. Anger was a shit album, why don't you look at what the band was going through when they made this album. This album was not meant to sell millions, it was not meant to top charts. This album needed to be put out in this manner, and needed to sound like this, because this is what the band was going through. A shitty part in their careers, as well as their lives. They recorded this album without an official bassist all the way up until it was almost finished. Their producer was laying down Bass. This album is a projection of the emotions they were colliding with in themselves and between each other. Of course, we all know Kirk was just kinda there to be the mediator, but still. The point stands. And for those who dislike this album, and the way it sounds, they might not have yet experienced these emotions? I have always absolutely been in love with this album because of the emotions it captures, I can relate to it completely. Not to say those who don't like the album have never been through some shit, but that's just my take on it. Maybe they've never been in a position where they had to alter themselves forcefully? It's all just a perspective thing, please don't bite my fucking head off. Just enlighten me. Thank you for reading.
EXACTLY. And for this reason, I'm not ashamed to say that St. Anger is one of my favorite Metallica albums. This album is the rawest representation of mental illness i've ever heard in music. As someone who's suffered through hell and back mentally and still recovering, this album means a lot to me, it really does help me cope. It's also why I love Slayer's "bad" albums. God Hates Us All is my favorite Slayer album of all time.
@@kennyslg8914 See, I'm glad there's other people who can relate to this. Thank you for understanding. Best of luck to you during your recovery. May the power of Metal be with you.
This became one of my favorite songs of Metallica since the first time I listened. St. Anger is a great album for me. I understand that the old fans despise this kind of music, there's a whole concept of metal that changed throughout the decades, but as a 19 years old who grew on nu-metal and metalcore, I know that this album was a piece of art from my generation. Unfortunately back in the 00s Metallica was seen as and old band and didn't gathered the deserved attention to this album, only the Metallica fans knows this album and that's sad. I just like all the lyrics and the heaviness of the album, it's so real and touch a lot of the issues my generation go through (anxiety, depression, anger, etc) and it's crazy how they managed to make such great album that speaks to me and this generation. Not saying that they were old back then, but things was way different than when they began and the 2000s metal was really young. And just for the record, I like the first 5 albums of Metallica, tbh I like pretty much everything they've done apart from REload.
I am 47...huge tallica fan, and I LOVE THIS ALBUM...for the very same reasons you stated, the heaviness and the lyrics, man. What better way to let out anger?
thing is people don't realize what james was going through during the recording of this whole album i suffered from addiction so i know how james felt and all of that are put into the lyrics of every song on this entire fucking amazing album
They did that on purpose. Just read the Wiki page for it. They wanted that raw garage band style because of the struggles and tension they were all going through.
While I'll not agree saying its gold, I won't deny its really a lot better than people claim. I think people who put it down that much are actually just sour that their favourite thrash bands weren't half as successful as Metallica and they just wanted to pounce on Metallica at anything. I think they're just jealous farts. Then there are another section of close minded people who want everything to be thrash. What harm if metallica tried something different? and well too.
Because of the lazy songwriting, the nu metal Hot Topic crowd pandering, and most of all the godawful sterile neutered PRODUCTION. Every song would be better if it had been condensed to 3 minutes or less.

I actually like it a lot I think the weak part of this song is everything that comes after the " BUT IT'S ALL TOO MUCH YEAAAAAAH". and some mid parts that are just too repetitive.
Problem with this album is that it’s not memorable at all (except the snare sound lol). Can’t remember a single riff, verse or hook when I’m not listening to it.
Walamonga 1313 I actually find the riffs on the album to be highly memorable. In fact the attitude of the whole album has greatly influenced my guitar playing and writing
Did Metallica pull a Bruce Springsteen and release a bunch of demos under the guise of being a proper album? At least Bruce was upfront about it, and the demos were amazing. This is a piece of shit.
I didn't like St. Anger at all when it was released, but it's grown on me. Invisible Kid, Dirty Window, Sweet Amber and The Unnamed Feeling are pretty awesome songs.
I get what people saying about Metallica being soft and redundant with this album. I will agree to an extent; there are songs I like on this album, but you kind of ask like, 'how many times can Lars say he needs help, or that he's crazy? How many different ways can you come up with words to insinuate you're in pain?' It gets old, and with how many years they have been playing, you would think they would evolve and have more to say. Not hating, just saying.
I think that he's talking about the message, rather than the execution of the songs. Yes, they are very fast, loud songs, but the message is soft. And really, at least to me, that's the most important part.
Fun fact: James didn't write these lyrics. No one in the band wrote them. Robert Jens- Metallica's studio advisor- wrote them. That's why they're so hysterically bad.
Master of puppets for me. There that 3 people with different tastes (nu-metal, rock and thrash) in music with a single favorite band. That's why metallica rocks.
ryhansen1 Those are some pretty solid albums, but I just truly believe, from front to back, this trumps all their other work. Best metal album of the last 20 yrs man
For me it is this, because of it's rhythmic style to it, and probably the best produced out of the other songs, Frantic, best lyrics arrangement (if you know what I mean, not like Purify) and Self-titled song, cuz of how fast it is. Dirty Window is the only St. Anger song I have in my Spotify library that I didn't enjoy...
I don't know what it is, but there's something really cool about the tin can snare during 0:55 and the like. It's like a blacksmith's hammer coming down under the verses.
St. Anger is like its own part of metallica.

Compared to older Metallica albums like puppets, lighting ect this album sucks. But the album by itself isn’t really that bad imo
The only weak part of this song is "Uuh,what a good boy you are" part.
I actually like it a lot
I think the weak part of this song is everything that comes after the " BUT IT'S ALL TOO MUCH YEAAAAAAH".
and some mid parts that are just too repetitive.
I love this song !! hits close to home..i was an invisible kid!!!
Did Metallica pull a Bruce Springsteen and release a bunch of demos under the guise of being a proper album? At least Bruce was upfront about it, and the demos were amazing. This is a piece of shit.
Love this song!
As much as my taste in metal has changed, i still hate this album.
I didn't like St. Anger at all when it was released, but it's grown on me. Invisible Kid, Dirty Window, Sweet Amber and The Unnamed Feeling are pretty awesome songs.
Nope. The album sucked completely.
Avatar Korra My favorites on the album are Invisible Kid, Purify, and Frantic.
ryhansen1 and My World
TheUnknownSin And I hate you.
Lyrics:

lars drum sound like empty paint can
I get what people saying about Metallica being soft and redundant with this album. I will agree to an extent; there are songs I like on this album, but you kind of ask like, 'how many times can Lars say he needs help, or that he's crazy? How many different ways can you come up with words to insinuate you're in pain?'
It gets old, and with how many years they have been playing, you would think they would evolve and have more to say.
Not hating, just saying.
+ᏰᏗşιℓ James, not Lars, at least as far as I know. I've never heard Lars speak. If this is Lars, then that's news to me.
+ᏰᏗşιℓ how is this remotely soft? some of metallica's heaviest can be found on this album.
I think that he's talking about the message, rather than the execution of the songs. Yes, they are very fast, loud songs, but the message is soft. And really, at least to me, that's the most important part.
dude, smart est shit ive réad in a while. i like tyour point of view
Like pumped up kicks, but more so.
I might be the minority but I like St Anger,is a cool album.
that fucking snare my god
St anger was awesome. Snare rules.
Drop #g wow
The fact this song is in Drop G# makes it painfully hilarious, cus it doesn't match the vocal style at all😂😂😂
How so?
The vocals litterally sound like Trey Parker from South Park doing some funny song on the show
The worst Metallica song
Fun fact: James didn't write these lyrics. No one in the band wrote them. Robert Jens- Metallica's studio advisor- wrote them. That's why they're so hysterically bad.
Solophent II they’re not that bad
That's why he's invisible.
i just came from the 2015 remake video
.. that snare twang... fuck ive never heard it so loud before 😂😂😂
I never cared much for metallica, this was the only cd i liked :/
good for you
This comment makes me sad XD
Ok song. Perfectly describes the lover I could never help. Also REALLY hate the trash can drum sounds.
Best. Album. EVER.
I would say it's "Load". They had some emotional songs in there. St. Anger is still awesome though.
Master of puppets for me.
There that 3 people with different tastes (nu-metal, rock and thrash) in music with a single favorite band. That's why metallica rocks.
Brandon Westfall Even though my favorite Metallica Song (Frantic) is on here, my favorite albums were Ride the Lightning and Death Magnetic
ryhansen1 Those are some pretty solid albums, but I just truly believe, from front to back, this trumps all their other work. Best metal album of the last 20 yrs man
Brandon Westfall hardwired
Dammit Pat, stop reminding me of St Anger...
I've never heard this song or any song off this album until Pat talked about it, now I have a burning hatred for Pat.
Which Pat? TBF Zaibatsu Pat?
Brandon Tachiera Yep, Fuckboivin.
Lol,when did he mention this album? Podcast?
+Brandon Tachiera In a Ride To Hell episode if I recall correctly. I could be wrong though
0:49 that riff sounds like Meshuggah, awesome
TRIVIUT Its because they are tuned to Drop G# on this song which is down in the range of most Djenty bands. Nice profile name btw cad
BT Studio Productions I think it's actually B standard on this song
Thall
A disillusioned Idiot And pasta no, its drop G#..i have guitar magazine special issue with this song tabbed on it
demiurge right???
If you forget the fact that this is a metallica album it's actually quite good in itself 🙂
I'll never understand Matt's appreciation for shitty music. It makes for some great content though!
Who's Matt?
This is actually the only song that I like from St. Anger
Coming from a fan of this album, in my opinion it is the only song I don't enjoy on it
For me it is this, because of it's rhythmic style to it, and probably the best produced out of the other songs, Frantic, best lyrics arrangement (if you know what I mean, not like Purify) and Self-titled song, cuz of how fast it is. Dirty Window is the only St. Anger song I have in my Spotify library that I didn't enjoy...
I love this song and this whole album. METALLICA rules!!!
I don't know what it is, but there's something really cool about the tin can snare during 0:55 and the like. It's like a blacksmith's hammer coming down under the verses.
every time I listen to this album it gets better
