It's more of the concept itself I appreciate. They had a pretty good struggle through the making of this album, almost fatal. I don't see this as a album they tried their best at, just letting out some aggression.
Folks should realize too, one of the most legendary albums ever was Garage Days. And it had way worse quality.

Those of you who say St. Anger was a shit album, why don't you look at what the band was going through when they made this album. This album was not meant to sell millions, it was not meant to top charts. This album needed to be put out in this manner, and needed to sound like this, because this is what the band was going through. A shitty part in their careers, as well as their lives. They recorded this album without an official bassist all the way up until it was almost finished. Their producer was laying down Bass. This album is a projection of the emotions they were colliding with in themselves and between each other. Of course, we all know Kirk was just kinda there to be the mediator, but still. The point stands. And for those who dislike this album, and the way it sounds, they might not have yet experienced these emotions? I have always absolutely been in love with this album because of the emotions it captures, I can relate to it completely. Not to say those who don't like the album have never been through some shit, but that's just my take on it. Maybe they've never been in a position where they had to alter themselves forcefully? It's all just a perspective thing, please don't bite my fucking head off. Just enlighten me. Thank you for reading.

EXACTLY. And for this reason, I'm not ashamed to say that St. Anger is one of my favorite Metallica albums. This album is the rawest representation of mental illness i've ever heard in music. As someone who's suffered through hell and back mentally and still recovering, this album means a lot to me, it really does help me cope.
It's also why I love Slayer's "bad" albums. God Hates Us All is my favorite Slayer album of all time.

This became one of my favorite songs of Metallica since the first time I listened. St. Anger is a great album for me. I understand that the old fans despise this kind of music, there's a whole concept of metal that changed throughout the decades, but as a 19 years old who grew on nu-metal and metalcore, I know that this album was a piece of art from my generation. Unfortunately back in the 00s Metallica was seen as and old band and didn't gathered the deserved attention to this album, only the Metallica fans knows this album and that's sad. I just like all the lyrics and the heaviness of the album, it's so real and touch a lot of the issues my generation go through (anxiety, depression, anger, etc) and it's crazy how they managed to make such great album that speaks to me and this generation. Not saying that they were old back then, but things was way different than when they began and the 2000s metal was really young. And just for the record, I like the first 5 albums of Metallica, tbh I like pretty much everything they've done apart from REload.

While I'll not agree saying its gold, I won't deny its really a lot better than people claim. I think people who put it down that much are actually just sour that their favourite thrash bands weren't half as successful as Metallica and they just wanted to pounce on Metallica at anything. I think they're just jealous farts. Then there are another section of close minded people who want everything to be thrash. What harm if metallica tried something different? and well too.

      1. Can you write songs to a decent, publishable degree? Thought not.
      2. Everything is pandering to some crowd, somewhere. Old news. Try harder.
      3. All new Metal, not just 'Nu Metal', is dog shite. If you seriously think any Metal band of any sub-genre, post-80's is good, you have forfeited your right to an opinion.
      4. It was acclaimed as the rawest, heaviest Metallica album ever produced.
Basically, you're talking shit and probably don't know what you're talking about.
As with the rest of the people with your unified, invalid opinion; Go back to Amon Amarth, or whatever guttural crap people like you call "music".

Metallica with this album came out with such aggression and anger and decades of suffering of personal nightmares and its told all in detail on this album with everything they went through in their career I relate to it it such a deep honest album its raw as their old demos but with modern production Bob Rock got them to go out of their comfort zone and just write your anger and rip yourselves open and Lars drumset sound tight even though its like the young kid in all of us air drumming on pots and pans etc and basic sound lyes but simplicity Metallica explorer extremely well thats why they have a religious like following and the guitar tone on this is the sound of whats creaking floor boards at violent pitch and the sound of violent screams of such emotion I love this album its the one I listen to in the gym RTL and StAnger are fantastic Metallica for the win yes Iam a diehard follower and proud to admit it and les I worship Megadeth too but no need to go there lol

I think the snare is unique, I would have mastered this differently, but kept these tracks too just because they're hard as hell. Fuck anybody who hates this album, they obviously don't like Metallica for the right reasons. They obviously don't need solos. They should have had epic AJFA leads on here, but still. This would be better for a mosh pit than anything off Death Magnetic (With very minor exceptions). But as far as this album goes, it's like Korn meets Metallica. Props to Metallica for this album. i bought this album when it came out and regretted it. but now that I listen to it Now when I've become more mature with the sound of metal the tone James and Kirk are using with the style of metal they are playing is actually really heavy. it's a nasty tone they have and Lars's drums still are horrible for real. that snare needs to be thrown away. sounds like some kid from a parade in his room trying to keep pace with a metal song. horrible

    • @marcosrenan93
      @marcosrenan93 8 лет назад +4

+Clifford Purk I respect your opinion but what makes me see this album as super heavy is the drums, especially because they sound like drums recorded in a garage. The James' vocals help me think this way as well. it's rough and without any "special care" (He screams all songs). Cheers.

I get what people saying about Metallica being soft and redundant with this album. I will agree to an extent; there are songs I like on this album, but you kind of ask like, 'how many times can Lars say he needs help, or that he's crazy? How many different ways can you come up with words to insinuate you're in pain?'
It gets old, and with how many years they have been playing, you would think they would evolve and have more to say.
    Not hating, just saying.

I think that he's talking about the message, rather than the execution of the songs. Yes, they are very fast, loud songs, but the message is soft. And really, at least to me, that's the most important part.
