Let's not forget Jeremy Brett as Sherlock Holmes. The 80s and 90s (and a bit onward with Poirot) were the high water mark for detective fiction television adaptations.
Joan Hickson was the essential Miss Marple . Her portrayal was just perfect & in my opinion, exactly what Agatha Christie invisioned when she created the character. I watched all different versions of the dotting senior detective, from Rutherford to MacKenzie & none can ever come close to Joan Hickson. She is without a doubt my favorit, even beating my second favorite ( Jessica Fletcher ), who also was Miss Marple in the Mirror Cracked 1980..Joan Hickson's theme music for Miss Marple is just superb ...Joan Hickson 10/10..🙂
Atle Kristiansen certainly. I've always thought this would make quite good exit music at a funeral....mysterious but triumphant. A decent epitaph for anyone.
This music was the signal that it was Sunday night in America. In a way it was as though I'd worked all week just to see Miss Marple sort things out. I truly relaxed. When Inspector Slack heard her name he cringed, his look said it all. Oh dear. And all she ever wanted out of it as a reward was, well, perhaps another cup of tea. God bless your dear old Blighty.
The TV titles with the drawings of the ladies and their sour evil faces always sent a shiver down my spine as a youngster, coupled with this most English of tunes they went perfectly together.
This is nostalgic to me because my mom was really into Agatha Christie novels and the shows made from them. i remember she would get the sets from the local library and also when possible buy the dvds in the early and mid 2000s. It's nostalgic because to me it was a happier time and nowadays I don't really see that side of her anymore. It's sad but at least the memory of her being happy is still there.
I used to wait for this program in front of TV at night with rapid heartbeating when I was kid. Somehow, I got used to English things, and went to study to England and met my wife staying next door. Oldery ladies around us were like matchmakers, they tried to connect me and wife which is almost same characters and atmosphere in that drama. I didn't know my life where to go when I watched this..but I know life led me to the door where beautiful people live. Really appreciate..really speechless to this program..so meaningful to me.
@@GaryTBuffalo24 I never thought about it... But I think you're right (a bit like the Emmerdale theme). The sound of the echo of your childhood crying out to you. Especially to a Taru!
Love this theme along with the old one from Masterpiece Theater. Doesn't get more English than this. When I hear this I'm ready to sit down and have a proper cup of tea.
Beautiful music theme associated with the best Miss Marple version played by Joan Hickson. Over 30 years later, this lovely music still plays in my mind quite often. It is has a cheery and uplifting effect to my soul. Thank you for posting it! 😃🎶👏
this tune used to turn my head as an eight year old. first time hearing an oboe possibly. or is it an English horn. I don't even know the difference right now. I used to hear this tune while playing with toy cars in a living room while my parents were watching tv. whenever I heard it I froze, transfixed. it doesn't involve nostalgia. just a good tune. a lot of old tv shows had memorable themes. even magnum pi.
The instrument is definitely an oboe. I am an amateur string player in an orchestra and possess perfect pitch, so know about these things. Theme tune is in C major. The English Horn or, as it is better known, Cor Anglais, plays a fifth below the oboe and its range is therefore lower.
Escribo desde Honduras. Siento tanto amor inexplicable por el paisaje inglés y esa dulce música. Que me imagino que todos los ingleses son tan dulces y corteses. No podría creer que pasarán los crímenes de Mrs Christie allí. Saludos!
Should have used the Fontana book covers from the 1980s - they were the best book jackets ever; especially A Murder is Announced which had a cake in the shape of a skull that had blood dripping out of it and A Caribbean Mystery that had a tropical bird and a knife in place of its beak.
i read recently somewhere that c.1985 it was expected that jan hammer's miami vice theme was going to win "a tv theme of the year" award but instead it went to "murder she wrote". but didn't anyone hear this? or maybe it wasn't 1985. 1984? english horns put to good use for a change anyway, that's for sure. or am i just hearing an oboe? don't know. "ask paul mccandless, son".
I wish someone would re-release the original BBC records real version from 1984 . It was much tighter with more staccato oboe as per the score and the orchestra was bigger conducted by Jon 'Have I Got News For You' Altman
Ken Howard and Alan Blaikley. The latter being my uncle who died last year. Lots of amazing TV theme tunes written by them! Flame Trees if Thika, By the Sword Divided. Xxx
I never warmed to Joan Hickson in this role-- she comes across as so puritanically straight-laced and humorless. Perhaps this is what Christie intended but I find Hickson's portrayal very off-putting-- certainly not anyone I'd want to spend any time with.
Jazz_Addict I think that was what was intended though. The message was that although she was supposed to be "a sweet old lady", she was actually a razor-sharp, acid-tongued expert in her field of detection, and a match for anyone (the local police and master criminals alike!). True empowerment I would say!!
@@bentattersfield3610 Ah-- you're no doubt correct! I haven't read the books, so I'm afraid I tend to let my spontaneous emotional response to the personality being portrayed dominate my reaction to the actor.
@@bentattersfield3610 Funny I never thought of Miss Marple as sweet. She was a no nonsense women who had little patience for selfish stupid people and lazy policemen. I know a lot of people didn't care for Margaret Rutherford as Miss Marple but she also was no nonsense.
2004mojo I didn't mind Margaret Rutherford too much; she was more comedic, but also good in her portrayal. I also like Helen Hayes and Julia McKenzie, but none of the others and certainly NOT that McEwan woman. However, no one shall surpass Joan Hickson
Fascinating! Would you mind telling me where, generally speaking? In the UK or another commonwealth country? I had long recognized it was suitable for transcription to the organ. It's nice to know I wasn't the first to see the potential. I'm sure you father was a better organist than I am!
Is it just me or can this theme tune, this series, this version of Miss Marple just cannot and will not ever be beaten? Perfect.
Totally agree,Joan was the best miss Marple
100%
I agree and have been listening to Joan reading some of the original stories on audio book. She had such a soothing voice
Agatha Christie herself wanted Joan Hickson to play Miss Marple, too. I think she did a wonderful job portraying her.
It won't because it's nigh impossible now for shows to made with sincerity and without self-awareness.
She was the best Miss Marple, together with Suchet as Poirot...best actors of all time!!!! Greatfull for her excellent job!

@@nancyfournier9632 I still say that the theme tune to miss Marple..is based on Elvis Presley.

As a lonely teen in late 80s America this series was a balm. Thanks for posting this iconic theme.
I hope your lonely teen years are long behind you ❤
Joan Hickson - Jane Marple forever...
Atle Kristiansen certainly. I've always thought this would make quite good exit music at a funeral....mysterious but triumphant. A decent epitaph for anyone.
Never took to any other Miss Jane Marple than Joan Hickson, the definitive version.
The Best there will ever be! When the Queen gave her OBE she told her you play it like one envisages it!!! 💙💙💙
loved her as miss marple!
Well, Christie met her as a younger woman and told her she was going to picture her when writing Miss Marple from then on, so that's that. ;)
The pinnacle of British Television production, Thank you , Joan Bogle Hickson.
