The first Romantic symphony?| Franz Schubert | Symphony No. 8, Unfinished

Some think of this as the first Romantic symphony because it combines lyrical melodies with the Classical sonata dramatic framework. It also uses instruments for their sound and poetic effect instead of just their function.
From our March 2023 livestream, enjoy Franz Schubert's Unfinished Symphony in this performance by the Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra, under the baton of conductor Louis Langrée. Although Schubert started Symphony No. 8 six years before his death, the work remained unfinished, with only two movements fully composed in 1822.
