    I took advantage of that sale on the Creep for patina practice before starting on my expensive Proline body. I had great luck with the salt-and-hairspray method on both bodies but now I have a painted Creep body looking for a home. So I guess I need to build another rig.
    My method is a lot more fiddly than yours though. I do clear matte inside and out, then use orange and metallic red on the inside randomly. That puts the rust layer inside, then I do the paint color on the outside over the hairspray and salt.
    For salt I find it’s best to use irregular salt if possible. I’d use Maldon but it’s very expensive, but some kosher salts and sea salts are nice and irregular. If you ever see David’s Kosher Salt, that one is perfect.

    We have had a Silhouette for years now. We originally bought it to do heat transfer vinyls for t-shirts and such, but these days I mostly use it for adhesive vinyls. I'm about to paint a cliffhanger for my LCG build, and I'll be using the Silhouette for design masks before I break out the airbrush. A vinyl cutter is a great tool to have around the house, and we still use it for clothing, t-shirts or items my wife sows (mainly beanies, baby and kids clothing these days), mostly made as gifts for friends and family.

    Very nice job as always! I watch Plasmo's modelling channel and he has some great weathering techniques that transfer well.
    He uses a distressed sponge to add random paint chips. Another cool one is sealing with matt vlear then adding oil runs and such with dilute oil paint, remiving excess with a cue tip.
    Anyhow, keep those Creeps coming!

    Painting bodies is such a relaxing part of the hobby. I was airbrushing bodies before I was even into the Hobby.
    I only do the rock crawling. But I still airbrush bodies for my buddies for their go. Fast trucks.

    Thanks for this video! Showing in detail how you do it! Might buy a few bodies and experiment and see whats available here haha. Also Gorilla tape is bloody fantastic, all of my bodies got it. In my Rally cars and two tamiya buggies use Gorilla tape on the lower edge to give some wear resistance and strength, and ofcourse reinforce the bodyposts.
    Amazing how simple the patina work looks!

  • @dmgarage5182

    I thought i was alone using spray vinyl fabric dye on bodies. When i did 1/10 scale drag racing i used the bright red on every body i ran because it would never come off. The body would crack before the fabric dye let go.

    • @CrawlerCanyon
      @CrawlerCanyon  Год назад

      I've been trying to convince people to use it for YEARS. I mean, an 11oz can used to be $6, and would do 2-3 bodies. Never, EVER chips.
      Duplicolor is missing out on a market-- they should be relabelling and selling out of hobby shops as well. I just did a TRX-4 Sport body with vinyl red, and the can had to be 10 years old.

    So, everyone in rc needs a vinyl cutter and a 3d printer? 😂😂😂
    The creepER cab is a great deal, I've thought of getting one to customize my Yeti Jr Can-Am.

    • @CrawlerCanyon
      @CrawlerCanyon  Год назад +1

      I would honestly put the vinyl cutter way above the 3D printer, but that comes from a parts fabrication background. I can make a bumper mount, side skirt, ESC tray, etc. in less time than it would take me to figure out the software for the 3D printer, much less print it. But reproduce identical window masks dozens of times? Baby, there's a machine for that.

      I'm a better designer than fabricator. I can't draw any other way but 3-5 view schematic drawings. My grandfather was a draftsman, my father is a machinist/draftsman, and I started a degree in Mechanical Design; I guess that's got something to do with it.😎

    I got the cricut joy last week n its awesome. I painted the inside of my creep cab a metallic blue an I don't know if I should back it with silver or white? Great video ❤❤

    • @CrawlerCanyon
      @CrawlerCanyon  Год назад +2

      (For me) that would depend on how translucent the paint is. If you can see right through like it's tinted blue, I'd use silver. But if it's semi-opaque, I'd do white, as the color will pop more. For reference, Wiley the Coyote is backed with white, Tamiya Metallic Purple for the color coat.

    How do you go from a scan to cutting it on a cricket? I need to make some duplicate masks and have a cricket available to me

    • @CrawlerCanyon
      @CrawlerCanyon  Год назад +2

      Low tech is my approach. Once I have the scan, I import it into Cricut Design Space, hoping that it's not loaded with too many jaggies and errors-- they look smooth to the eye, but the scanner sees EVERYTHING. I then put the imported file on the workspace, and here's where it gets low tech: I measure one of the existing masks, like for Creeps I use the back window-- then just make sure that the one on the workspace matches that measurement. Click duplicate to make double, and cut it.

  • @michaelwilson7973
    @michaelwilson7973 Год назад

    Could you explain how to use a Cricut to make window masks and cut them out? I have a cricut but used it once to make sure it works.

    • @CrawlerCanyon
      @CrawlerCanyon  Год назад +1

      I do it lazily-- I scan the OE window masks to start. If I had to build them from scratch, that would be a lot more labor intensive. Scan at 72dpi, import the file into Cricut Design Space, do any clean up to erase the lint and cat hair that was on the scanner bed. I then measure the long edge on any window mask that has a relatively flat side, and resize the one in the workspace to match that measurement. Duplicate, cut (at least) two sets. I recommend Oramask 813 if you're doing a lot of masks, or plain 651 is fine. I'm still using 651 as I got a variety pack (over 25 feet worth) for like $20 many months ago.

    • @michaelwilson7973
      @michaelwilson7973 Год назад

      I will give that a try. New to the cricut scene. Loved the patina video I want to give it a try. I’m on vacation in Daytona Beach.

      @@CrawlerCanyonwhat kind of clear coat do you use

    • @CrawlerCanyon
      @CrawlerCanyon  11 месяцев назад

      @@michaelwilson7973 honestly, nothing comes close to the absolute ease of use and "touchless" matte finish of Tamiya PS-55, but I hate having to spend $7 to get one body out of a can-- you squeeze two cabs out of a can. So I've been trying EVERYTHING. The new Traxxas stuff goes on horribly, but if you wet-sand afterward, it is SUPER matte. That's the final coat on both of these. The Duplicolor vinyl clear sprays phenomenally, but is kinda semi-gloss, so same story, needs post-work.
      The goal is the same performance as the Tamiya, but not at $2.50 an ounce. Absolutely don't try the Duplicolor 1K Ultra Matte Clear. It's basically satin. And expensive.

    paint a traxxas body? I have yet to see any come unpainted. and cause of that they are overpriced junk

    • @CrawlerCanyon
      @CrawlerCanyon  Год назад +1

      To my knowledge, you can get all of the Traxxas crawler bodies in clear-- I've done the Sport, Sport Camper, and Defender. TRaxxas just almost never provides a picture of the clear body, but shows the completed body instead, presumably to add confusion. Do I think they're too expensive? Well, I think all lexan bodies are overpriced. The Sport body isn't bad at like $45. The others? Well, $120-150 for a body is INSANE, but look what you get for $75 in the shape of an Axial Early Bronco-- no grille, no exterior details, not even the roll cage that's required to actually attach the body-- that's another 25 bucks. At least with Traxxas, it's ALL in the bag.
      Now-pre-painted bodies are a scam.
