Depends on lots of things. Firstly your travel dates, where from/ to, then on how many travellers etc. Also cheap does sound like an older model with maybe less service if you need it the most! I recommend reliable operators such as GO Rentals, Ezi, Apex etc to have a good time 😃
@ travel in March25 - 2pax for 14 days, service provider is Budget /Next? Also, is Budget / Next a reliable service provider ? Just to be clear, do i really need IDP, if my India driving licence is in English?
Hi Ajay, Budget Rent a Car NZ is one of the main (big) operators, they have a good reputation, but you pay top dollars. Never heard about Next Rentals in NZ. I recommend GO Rentals or Thrifty (they have a Black Friday Special on at the moment) - see geni.us/RentalCarOptions Generally with an English written license there is no need for an IDP, but if so you can purchase an official translation. Check for full requirement when making a booking. Cheers Michael
Hi got a quick question about the bond. If we pay the additional daily fee does it amount to a lower bond on a credit card or are we not required to keep a bond?
Is Ace Car rentals a reliable operator for 10 days in South Island? I am getting a mouthwatering deal on Qeeq from Christchurch Airport to Queenstown Airport.
Yes, ACE has been around for a long time. But, personally I have not dealt with them. Guess you will need to expect an older vehicle, which can be ok. Keep us post on how you go with them and enjoy your time in NZ!
@@hazmiamiruddinbinmohamad7914 Yes, I mostly recommend the RAV4 to my clients. It's more comfortable to drive and has more space. The XTrail is very similar. Note, rental car companies will not guarantee a specific car brand or model, but will say RAV4 or similar. Enjoy your time in NZ!
I'm doing a south island road trip over the course of 7 days (I'll have spent 5 weeks working and living in CBD Auckland). We're flying into Queenstown to pick up a car, and plan on dropping it off back in Auckland (or Wellington if we decide to fly back). We do plan on taking the ferry from Picton to Wellington. Do you think we're better off using one of those local rental brands you mentioned (ezi, apex, etc.) or renting from a major brand (avis)? Also, many of the local companies make you buy your ferry tickets through them it seems...can you opt out of that? Are you actually saving money by buying through them? Does that cancel out any chance of getting a refund or rescheduling if you have to? Thank you! :)
All great questions Justin. Generally you would be better off going with a local operator as you mentioned above. RAD is good too and they have a selection or late and older (and less pricy) vehicles. Operators will provide some 'ferry deal' only in the off season (May-Sept) or if they need the vehicles returned back to Auckland (which could be anytime!). So, it's always a great idea to check with them if they are able to cover the ferry ticket for the car and only purchase for the passenger tickets. As you have the vehicle for 5 weeks this would be a great rental for the operators as they often have to pay for truck transfers. Again, all depends on your travel dates, demand/supply and your vehicle preferences. Hope this answers your questions!
@@virtualjourneysnz Thank you for such an in depth response - really appreciate it! I actually won't have the car until I arrive in Queenstown. I'll be primarily using public transport to get around Auckland or weekend rental cars. But for the purpose of the South Island trip, I will only have a rental car for 7 days. Does that change your answer at all? Thanks again! :)
OK, with only seven days in the South Island I would suggest to p/u in QT and drop-off in Picton. Then go as a passenger only (less hassle than with a car). An operators such as RAD - www.radcarhire.co.nz/ - have depots at both locations. Hope this helps!
Did I hear you right, my card will likely be charged $4k-$5k at the time of vehicle pickup? I am booked with Apex, clearly I will need to review my contract carefully. I chose Apex as they allow one way travel and I could take it on the ferry and drop it in Auckland to close my trip.
Yes, if you on a standard insurance rental with excess you will be charged the bond. Just check with Apex they theirs is NZ$3300 (not sure if including or excluding GST, which is 15%). It's all written on their website under 'Includes'. Yes, Apex will allow the car onto the ferry. It's a recognised, long-established brand here in NZ. Enjoy your time!
Is it a good idea to book a wild card/ surprise car? It is cheap, hence evaluating. Please guide

If you pay the insurance excess you will only have a small bond for fuel/cleaning (only $100-200 depending on the rental company). Hope that helps!

There are lots of points in this video to consider. ‘Sing out’ for any questions needing clarification 😃
Is hybrid Rav 4 a good choice? Daily rental is higher compared to Corolla/ X Trail but fuel consumption is slightly better.

Is Snaprental locally NZ owned company also?
Yes, they are!
