I think he was an actual serial killer, knew that he was going to die, but created the story of him being a werewolf to be the explanation for why he did it and so he could be immortalized in his village.
It makes sense to me, serial killers themselves are known for being charming when it comes to luring in victims or putting on a front to keep themselves from being detected. I'm inclined to think most werewolf attacks with people being named were committed by serial killers.

How terrifying this creature was! However, "voluntarily " confessing to crimes under torture is sketchy in any day and age. I wonder what became of the anointed girdle. Was it put away... destroyed... lost...?
Historically speaking; he had orginally confessed the very same macabre story long before his execution ever took place. So anything he claimed whilst under torture was a re-confessing of what he had already stated.
@@brunohale His confession was ridiculous and it was made under the threat of torture. This was just another witch trial. The villagers had cut off the paw of a wolf that had attacked a young girl. They were subsequently convinced that Stumpp was a werewolf because he was missing his left hand. This seems like a cautionary tale about the savagery of religious zealots. His confession didn't spare him from torture and he died a terrible death.
Do we know if he would use weapons or not? It kind of seems like he didn't since I did not see or hear anything of him mentioning weapons or weapons being found that he is said to use. If he didn't, that would make this even scarier since he would tear out some of his victim's hearts. Imagine trying to tear another human apart with nothing but your bare hands and teeth.

What I find myself asking, more so than them hunting down the wolf, was why didn’t they attempt to take the garter? Did they not even know if it’s power until it was too late? That’s the conclusion that I find makes the most sense. Case in point, Jekyll and Hyde, had they simply taken his elixirs, he’d no longer have the ability to transform. Of course that’s fiction and this is what they call non-fiction so I’ll go with that too. You’d truly have to already be near doing the same things that the wolf version did as a human to make such a deal and only want to be more effective at it. To have sharper skills and superhuman abilities. And possibly to rid himself of any and all morality while in wolf form. Truly an incredible story to hear, and definitely one that could inspire more research!

Yesssss! I love this story and I am glad you covered the story of Abel Griswold (thought to be Stubbe's birth name). Surprised you didn't mention how Stubbe was executive alongside his daughter who was incestuously involved? Also Jean Grenier was a 13 year old werewolf. The werewolf you were talking about was Gilles Garnier. But the similar names and both being from the same country make the mistake an easy one to make.

It seems more likely that he confessed under torture, and pamphlets written later embellished his story with the "succulent flesh" bit. Either way dude died a pretty horrible death.

I stayed under that oak for over 12 hours. When I saw the beast, I turned my bow planar to the horizon, knowing that this was my one and only shot. When I struck it greatly in the neck, I could tell from its screams, that it had not much time left in our world. I dropped my dagger at a hunter’s feet, which had also been pursuing the beast. Myself, gratified in my hunt, and him, being sung as a hero of his province. The songs that they sung, fantastic with a pint of ale.

Ever cop that has pulled me over or pulled a driver over while I was in the car, approached the drivers side with traffic driving beside them. But I'm in Alberta, Canada, and the law here is you slow tf down to 60km/h MAX when passing an emergency vehicle of any sort pulled over on the side of the road. I don't know if you have a law like that. Maybe you're right and there is just a higher chance of a cop being side-swiped by a drunk where you live, so they've made it policy to approach from the passenger side. I stayed under that oak for over 12 hours. When I saw the beast, I turned my bow planar to the horizon, knowing that this was my one and only shot. When I struck it greatly in the neck, I could tell from its screams, that it had not much time left in our world. I dropped my dagger at a hunter’s feet, which had also been pursuing the beast. Myself, gratified in my hunt, and him, being sung as a hero of his province. The songs that they sung, fantastic with a pint of ale.

Ever cop that has pulled me over or pulled a driver over while I was in the car, approached the drivers side with traffic driving beside them. But I'm in Alberta, Canada, and the law here is you slow tf down to 60km/h MAX when passing an emergency vehicle of any sort pulled over on the side of the road. I don't know if you have a law like that. Maybe you're right and there is just a higher chance of a cop being side-swiped by a drunk where you live, so they've made it policy to approach from the passenger side. Anyway, I happen to agree with you, these strange, absolutely un- sensational accounts are my favorite too. This one, especially so because the man didn't even THINK about the possibility for over 20 years, until he did, then, I'm willing to bet he gave it great thought, and likely had a hard time going to sleep for a while after he started really pondering it, well before he wrote you about it. Thanks for another great re-telling of an amazingly strange happening. You have distracted me for 45 minutes now from writing the paper I've barely started that is due unless than 20 hours now. 😂 Time well wasted.
