  • The best vampire movie anime has ever seen. Not much competition for the title, but still!
ALSO! I goofed near the end and spoke the wrong character's name. Apologies.

Small note, Sage: the ending does not involve Charlotte's family mourning her passing and leaving flowers on her grave, but Leila's. D came to complete his promise that he'd leave flowers on her grave if she died before him.

  • @SAPProd

I thought that was Leila’s family mourning her passing as an old woman, playing with earlier where she believed no one would mourn her when she dies and making D promise he would visit her grave.

Point of clarification, the female barberois can only merge with metal and wood. Metal and wood are classical elements in Japanese folklore and they are linked together by their position on the elemental wheel.
Just a fun fact you miss if you don't actually know anything about classical Japanese culture.

Technically, they were originally Chinese, rather than Japanese, but considering the sheer amount of cultural influence China had (and has) on the rest of East Asia, some ideas of the elements spilled over from China to Japan.
The traditional Japanese elements are: Fire, Water, Earth, Air, and Void.
The traditional Chinese elements are: Fire, Water, Earth, Wood, and Metal.

    • @darthgeist3966
      @darthgeist3966 5 лет назад +29

Fun fact: Caroline, the female Barbarois, is in fact a Dhampir in the original Novel, being a bastard child of a Vampire and a Barbaroi mutant. Not only can she merge with objects to alter her nature and theirs, but she can also use her vampiric powers to bite and control inanimate beings. Which she does in the Novel with a giant mechanical arm that had once belonged to a colossal robot the size of a small mountain, in order to try and kill D with it.
Also, Carmilla is a creation of the Anime. Carmilla does not exist in the Novel with the books ending being much more bitter-sweet than the Anime's. In that not only is the shuttle that would take Mayerling (not Mayer Link) and Charlotte to the City of the Night no longer functional, but Mayerling gets killed by Mashira (the wolf-dude), who is in fact a Carbuncle, the same kind of parasite as Left Hand, who moved bodies after his initial host was killed and had taken over the body of Borgoff Marcus, after Borgoff had been killed by Mayerling.
D, with Left Hand's assistance, would kill the parasite Mashira for good, but while they were doing that, Charlotte (who was alive since there was no Carmilla), killed herself on Mayerling's talon so that she could be with him in death, rather than live the rest of her life alone without him.

Okay anybody else wonder why anime made 21 years ago looks better than modern anime? Also why it feels more like anime? Mean Blood lust is an anime based off western vampires and post apocalypse themes, hell it even has guns and space ships. Yes it still has that feeling being anime, something distinctly and immutably different than anything in the west. This is something i find troublingly missing in most modern anime, outside of something like Konosuba, Full Metal Panic IV, That Time I got Reincarnated as a Slime to name the few notable difference most anime just doesn't feel like anime anymore.

Well, I think it relates to the segment where he was talking about computer automated animation. Hand drawn animation has that look which can't be replicated by computers. And of the animators are cutting corners, what other parts are being trimmed to save time and money. The best example I can think of is the Golgo 13 series from 2008. Barely animated, written with a gun nut mentality by people who obviously never fired a gun, and long drawn-out scenes of still frames with "scintillating" dialogue. Not to imagine so much CGI that really looks out place both in clashing of art styles and in smoothness of animation.

Oh, we're slowly getting to the understanding that a program and/or programmER can't make artistic decisions but holy hells have we got a long way to go and is it ever a painful trip. There's a HUGE myth that digital work needs no actual artistic knowledge or as little as possible (call it George Lucas syndrome). The tide is turning though, so keep throwing money at good art.

    • @Eener1000
      @Eener1000 5 лет назад +6

@@TheRid16 basically, shadows and dark areas are often in a contrasting color to the main color/lights color. If the whole scene is red, shadows are green to give an example. Putting shadow on something is not just mixing the main color with more black to make it darker. That is something most starting artists do and takes quite a bit of experience to grow out of and to really bring your art to the next lvl.

My mind just never stays focused on one project so as a result I wind up working on whatever one gets me hyped in the moment lol XD
Hopefully I will be able to complete the video in the near future. I've been dying to talk about this movie for ages and every time I introduce people to anime, Bloodlust is something I always include to show people just what animation (specifically hand drawn traditional animation) is truly capable of.

Also yeah Kawairi is an an odd one if you check out his very first movie Lensman it's drastically different from his tranditional stuff as well but what that and the birdy OVA have in common is that they are quite literally is earlier works but they do have small bouts of gothic themes to them difference is his work after are baptized in gothic themes

Sooo Bennett's 2 years younger than me...I feel old.
I actually remember watching this in my school's anime club several times back in the day.
I liked it, but I wasn't as big a fan of it as others were. Mostly because, at the time, it simply fell into a lot of the shonen anime tropes.
Main character gets involved in retrieving a plot coupon. Quirky Miniboss Squad tries to stop him and would-be allies from getting the plot coupon. Final Boss turns out to have a final form or a boss of his own. Main character gets the plot coupon, but being a shonen MOVIE, we don't learn anything new about the main character, just get "more of the same."
The difference, and why I actually DO remember it, was that the presentation was indeed really, really good. And characters DID actually talk about things and not just go from one plot point to the next.
I hate to say it but like a lot of revolutionary anime from the time, a lot of it gets diminished by the deluge of copycats that followed. Not from any malice on the part of the copycats, who are often made by people who DO want to do their own thing, but more by being hamstrung by the original author or studio as to what they can and can't do with the characters.
Probably why properties like Vampire Hunter D, Lupin III, and sometimes One Piece (MHA might get onto this list. I've heard the recent film is actually pretty good) get at least passable films, since their premise allows for standalone stories to slide in easily.

Happy Birthday Sage! I hope you have a great one and may your wishes come true!
I watch Bloodlust back in highschool and I really love it, (Without knowing it was the sequel and found some AMVs with it) the animation and the colors were just so gloomy and goth fit it and the story was something new to me.
When Charlotte tries to shield her Meier from the sun while he was still metling and kept getting attacked just breaks my heart. That was the time Twilight came out and I know this joke is been done to dead but better love story and when Charlotte was bitten Meier still fills in the request they both wanted. I believe their love story next Buffy and Angel as the best Vampire romance ever.
D was an interesting character to me, he knew what he is and didn't mope about it, even if he did find some happiness it won't last long because of his bloodline, same with Alucard from Hellsing thou the two are complete opposite but its nice to see Vampires that don't mope about thier eternal lives.

I think it’s a mix of technology, talent, resources (money and time), and zeitgeist. Like the creator of FLCL said, a show like that was only really possible because of the era it was created in. The same is true for much of the other great shows of yesterday. And it’s sad, to me at least, because I find myself growing more and more distant from the anime of today. It just doesn’t inspire the same air of mystery and wonder that anime used to.

I watched Bloodlust on a whim after seeing the scene where Meier walked into the sunlight to rescue Charlotte. It really was a beautiful film and also just a lot of fun. Vampire romance done right. I liked how equal their relationship was despite the power disparity, because Meier made it equal.
Charlotte's death in the end upset me mostly because it was a somewhat expected ending to a tragic mortal/vampire love affair and I wanted to see them make it despite the odds. What do you think the likelihood is of Meier reaching the city of the night only to find someone waiting like 'oh dear, another one. Humans are just so fragile aren't they?' and fixing her up? XD You've gotta imagine a lot of vampires who make the journey often outlast their human partners.
Can confirm you don't need to know anything about the series though. I jumped right in and wasn't lost at all.

It's not often something from my childhood ends up on Anime Abandon, and I'm glad this one did. I think Vampire Hunter D: Bloodlust had a much larger influence on my taste in anime than I realized. It was nearly half my life ago when my Dad put it on my brand new PSP for me to watch. Even back then, when /every/ anime I watched was good, it was obvious this one was a little different from the DBZ and Inuyasha I was used to.
It's also so god damned gorgeous. I think grandeur is an incredibly good word to describe it. Visually it's my favorite anime.
For some reason, the thing that's always stuck in my mind from this anime is the scenes where D buries himself in the ground to avoid the sun. It's hardly a big deal but I always thought that it was a really cool little touch.

The Black thing is something you learn to control in digital in art school, or at least I did. Part of it is stylistic, part is not that it can't be done, but that animation is salaried work that has no over time and ridiculous hours is pushing artists to either seek perfection and not get it done and get black listed, or push out something not as fully worked as it could be. personally I'll always be a fan of colored lines for this reason, when you take black digital lines to a dark neutral brown or a midnight blue or purple, you avoid making characters pop as harshly off a background. The cost of that is you have to go in and correct things that should have solid blacks, or closer too. In the end it's a matter of time crunch limiting more than the tech.

It's interesting that Sage delved into The Black thing. I'm an traditional art student and one of the first things we learned was never to use black paint if we wanted to paint from life. If you want shadows you could use purple and darken it, and you can get a nice black by using burn sienna with Ultramarine, or burn umber with a crimson. Black paint in a tube is often too harsh to integrate nicely with other vibrant colors.

@@zerakielvmark Yah, my first art lessons were never use a color that wasn't mixed with another color first. Its challenging enough in paint but when a peogram is micro-managing every 0 &1, I'm sure it's impossible. Can a computer tell the difference between that almost kinda maybe sorta blue-ish grey and the almost kinda maybe silver blue-ish grey? I've given people stroes trying to explain that while having artwork scanned and touched up. The general opinion is it can't be done, at least not ecomonically.

Um, I thought at the end, the funeral was for Leila since she gave D a spiel about no one coming to her funeral. He said he would, didn't he? The little girl looks just like her too.

    Great review.
So, yeah, admittedly one of my favorite moments was when an old man in a town stood up against that sheriff for D's sake... because D was that same man that saved him and a bunch of other kids from something that plagued the town decades ago.
And... yeah, vampire lore 101. If a character is named Carmilla... She's gonna be "evil even by vamp standards".
Also, the time skip and funeral at the end. When I first watched it years and years ago, never realized it was a time skip so I was confused. My bad.
... *deep breath* Paranoia Agent... The only Satoshi Kon anime I've ever watched, and not for lack of looking. Also, flawed as it is, one of my personal favorites.
If you must be caustic about it, fair enough. XD

My girlfriend made me watch both of these a few weeks ago. The first one I thought was 1980's anime schlock, it wasn't bad schlock, but it was still schlock. This one I thought was a masterpiece and it was done right. While the backdrop still could use a little work we got to understand D's story and the parasyite a little bit better, also the parasytes line are good, his final line about D being a good person who just dresses badly is hilarious.
And Benett is right the late 90's through early oughts were a magical time in anime, before it all went digital. We had digital effects but still had a lot of cel animation and it has a special look and grittiness to it. You can't have another anime look like trigon today.

    Well happy birthday Sage.
I guess both you and I are Libras.
No wonder I love this channel.
    LoL!
Welcome to the club of October babies.
oh and where is ice before reviewing that anime you showed us at the end of the episode here that you're going to be reviewing for November.
Do not try doing a drinking game to anything that is insane in that anime.
You would be needing new kidneys by the first five minutes of watching.
    Definitely keep away anything Sharp.
    Or blunt objects.
Because you will be hitting your head just trying to understand it.
or at least wondering how some of it connects to each other on some parts.
plus you're talking to a slightly older otaku.
I only got *coughing sounds* years on you.
What you'd still expect a lady to actually say her true age.
    Ha.. ha..
But anyway happy birthday Sage and hopefully many more.
And here's a suggestion for you why not review an anime that was created the year you were born.
Trust me I tried looking up and oh boy the madness that came from that search.
    And that was on me.
Imagine what you'd find for you.
    Enjoy your birthday and Halloween.

Before I nit-pick, great review! I'm so glad this movie is getting more recognition recently. However, there were (possibly,) THREE characters from the first movie, as it is implied that the mechanic D sees mid way through the movie is actually the kid from the first movie, as the scenario he describes was a lot like the events in the first movie. Granted, it's not 100% confirmed, but I still thought it was an interesting call back/cameo :)

I’m a little struck (in a good way) about how well articulated the traditional vs. digital argument you made was. I always try to talk to other people who like animation about why digital inherently does not have as organic or natural a feel as traditional media; some agree, some disagree. I always bring up things like the film grain lend color a greater depth and density, and how real lighting and film can aid the sense of authenticity, but I think that point about how the computers simply can’t discriminate between what colors do and do not appear in nature just because they’re not being done in real life is awesome. And I completely agree with you, Bennett

My username has a bit of a backstory. Y'all remember Twilight hitting the world in the balls around 2009 or so? Well, I was in high school when that happened, in freaking Port Angeles Washington no less! When I say Sparkleboy fever was everywhere, I mean that I personally had tourists asking me if I knew Edward or Jacob several times a month, and yes they were serious. Hell, still happens once in a blue moon. The split over team sparkles or team furry was so savage that there were physical bloody fights if you picked "wrong". So, since I was a teen girl, I got asked several times a day, every day, for months what my team was, so I said screw them and picked something else. Team Vampire Hunter D all day long baby, and he's STILL the (half) man!
