From the upcoming documentary film Behold The Earth, an inquiry into America's divorce from nature. Produced and directed by David Conover, Compass Light Productions.
One old new moon, as sister, cast a beam.
This newest moon, as rock, casts only shadow.
What speed westward could stop her being swallowed by the hills?
Which of all the fairest sounds between this rock and ours casts anything but memory?
Haunted is an easy word for all these moons and every sound below.
This was filmed September 2008 on Morey Hill in Hope, Maine. Last year was one of the best blueberry years in recent memory, and we spent much of the day eating handfuls of them. The spot is right up the hill from Morey Hill cemetery where DH Mansfield is buried. (More to come about that). We started filming a little before 6 am- it was still really cold. The film looks to be really cool. I'll post something to let everyone know when it's coming out.
Your music almost always brings me to tears. It makes me feel nostalgic for places I've never been and a feeling of connection to another time. Thank you so much for sharing your gifts with all of us.
That's nice to hear- thanks for the note!
Beautiful photography and camera work. Beautifully shows the beauty and majesty of nature, as well as showcasing your song in its best light. The old book of psalms is a wonderful touch.
Hey man. Yeah, puzzled sheep have always been among my best audiences. I was playing out in a field in Devon one time when a little lamb came running at me and smacked head first into the log I was sitting on. Then there were the cows that tried to eat my old Vauxhall chevette, but cows are another story.
Tim still listing January hills.
Your connection to nature is always apparent in your videos, Tim, and adds richness and authenticity to your music. Since returning to the north central Michigan countryside in February 2008, I've been reconnecting to my natural surroundings, too - walking, snowshoeing, hiking, but mostly, just listening. Thanks for your music/video!
I just saw Tim Eriksen for the first time in Santa Cruz, Ca, and I can't stop talking about him. He easily has the most raw talent I've ever seen in a performer, I'm amazed. I hope to have the chance to see him again!
This is beyond beautiful! It's stunning...beautiful visually and spiritually.
You are amazing and I can't even tell you how much I love this.
It's going in my favorites and I might very well listen to it on a daily basis as a prayer/ meditation.
Thank You so much for sharing this :)
Annie
his vocal control is simply beyond belief.
this gives me mega chills........the background is compelling.....the wind in the grass, the clouds, Tim's singing all combine to create such a profound mood...
My hear soars. My heart breaks. I hear the drone. I match it. You are truly an Earth Angel. Wow.
I'm wondering the same thing, it's lovely. Maybe overlooking the Quabbin? Or up in the hilltowns, looks like some low bush blueberries... Very nice.
Tim, This song reminds me of a Native American chant or prayer! Beautiful! Your music is so universal (or at least global). Wonder what response we'd get if we transmitted this into space...? At least the extra-terrestrials would know we had good taste down here! :)
I think I'm in heaven...oh, but it's very much the Earth!
amazing Earth, amazing music Tim :)
Simply Amazing! I absolutely love it and will definitely take the first opportunity to watch this film! I've been in a transcendentalist mood as of late and this fits it to a perfection! Mr. Eriksen, your music is unmatched and it appears that Thoreau would be proud as well!
As soon as Tim's voice started, I stopped what I was doing to see who was behind this great foreign-to-me sound. It charms and chills...amazing work Tim!!
great to see you getting some exposure in this way...when i first heard your music in 95 i had you crossed legged on top of the north yorkshire moors a singing silhouette with many puzzled sheep gathering around!
Great stuff
I love everything about this. Everything. Thank you and for Pslam 104...especially vs. 30...I went and looked when I saw the beautiful book propped there...boy does this bring revelation to me. The Spirit goes on. I'm going to absorb every particle of this creation...I love it. Thank you. ♥
This was wonderful! Beautifully filmed.
Absolutely fantastic....Beautiful scenery, haunting melody, such and incredible voice! And the throat singing at the end?! Blew.Me.Away!!! Thank you ever so much; incredible job!!
This is spell-binding. I think they will be playing this 500 years from now.
I'm glad you're enjoying it- thanks!
Great sound, a real taste of american spirit...greetings from Tuscany..
I'll be looking for the film--keep us updated on release. Thanks for including the words to the song--unforgettable.
Hi Tim...when I first heard this..I was wondering to myself if u had gotten any influence from the Tibetan throat singers. Cause it gives me the same warm and cozy hum. thank you for posting.
Brilliant artist.
Words fail. Except to say that this piece took me right out of time to somewhere else...
Thanks! Yeah, I even had time to spare and dinner to go. Many thanks to you all for coming out and to the folks at the Bowerhouse for looking after me so well.
Very soothing to the soul
You inspired me to write a poem!! Thank you...I featured your song and a portion of the scripture, too. :)
HOPE?! The rocks sure do have a presence there, don't they. They get especially weathered up there. ( I'll be up from Amherst to Alford Lake in Hope this summer.)
cool- there's so much to hear in the winter. Other times too of course, but winter sound best to me.
awesome like allways!
I will confess to about 100 of the views on this film. Rather than list all of the aspects of this video I love will just recommend that everyone view it. Did think the scenery looked familiar, I lived in Maine and loved the place.
In the film, it looked like the book was open to Psalm 104, which really complemented that scene, I thought. (There is much natural imagery in that psalm.)
The hymnbook was a nice touch. Was that your book and your idea? And which book was it? (I noticed that the words of the psalm complemented the theme of the film.)
I particularly liked when they showed the book on the rock with the grass in front.
mh605 how do I access this film? I very much want to see it.
excellent... epic.
haha- yeah, and a top notch production team to follow me around in the woods-
kind of looks like up in Heath, but it's actually in Hope, Maine. Great blueberries in both towns to be sure. (And curious rock piles...)
I've got goosebumps!!!
@batfancy Interesting you'd say that. Winter is so quiet, usually, here. What's to hear except the wind?
je regarde le paysage de cette vidéo, waw c calme et vivant et trop beau
I'm sorry if this has been answered.. What bible is this at 0:48.. I search Psalm 104 and it is beautiful, but this page shown is like a condensed interpretation. Forgive me I have not studied christian scripture for years.. could someone guild me to what this bible/translation is that is in the video? Thank you ( I have tried a while with google with no results.)
Just want to add I've listen to you for years Tim.. dude pure talent, I dream of a day that I build a stage that might I hire you to grace our fields and community.. honestly.. :P
Hey, thanks for the note! I don't remember which of my many early-mid nineteenth century editions of the psalms has 104 on page 173, but it's one of Isaac Watts' metrical translations (so in a hymnal rather than a Bible edition).
So that's the source of the photo on one of the Cordelia's Dad CDs I have? (i.e., cows standing around a compact car.) I always wondered.
yeah, it was mostly live. The mic and sound guy were hidden behind a rock. There was only one camera on the shoot, so we did several takes to get the different angles. The sound is mostly from the performance that went with the close shot, with a few bits flown in from a studio recording I did after the fact along with some extra location sound.
anyone else get chills up their spine?
It's still in production! But it will be finished, hopefully next year.
It's an 1809 Watts I brought along because I knew one of the interviews for the film involved psalm 40. It's not directly relevant to the song, but kind of makes sense in part because it works as a believable part of the landscape.
Amazing. This is what I hear:
One old new moon
as sister cast a beam
this newest moon, as this rock,
casts only shadow.
What speed westward could stop her
being swallowed by the hills?
Which of all the fairest sounds
between this rock and ours
casts anything but memory?
Haunted?
Haunted is an easy word
for all these moons.
And every sound below.
Wow, good ear! Or maybe I actually enunciated. The only difference is "this newest moon, as rock" rather than "this rock."
I thought so! But I had to make an error... like a spirit line. or maybe a small mark of my own... I'm so pleased to have found your music. As with all I love, I promote it to my friends unabashedly - I show them what I love. I call you a son of Orpheus. I've said it scarcely makes sense to talk of "Tim Eriksen's music" as though these were two separate things..." Thank You for all the pleasure you've given me, and more, for the addition to my life.
I appreciate it- thanks!
@freitas007 It's not out yet.
Myself and a friend have actually been working on that! very shoegaze-y guitars. combination of natural vocals and black metal screams. also a lot of analog synth harmonies ( talking the place of the throat signing and humming).
yea we're weird dudes. haha
extra comme musique
nature continues around you,
We forget the mountain music of New England.
I would also like to know that. And where to find it, if it is released. Thanks :)
This song is kind of mesmerizing but it also reminds me of the scene in the movie, "Things are Tough All Over" where Cheech and Chong are stranded in the desert and Chong is high on peyote strumming his guitar, lol
@weaponsgradedelirium It's actually in Hope, Maine- but still the Appalachians I guess...
hey Tim! you have a new camcorder??
15000 watch!
Where can I see this film?
Has the film been released?
It would be great if you did. Maybe someday you'll be able to hire someone and make a film of your own.
Where are you. I need you
