    Cool build! My last race bike (before my home mortgage, kids expenses, divorces, etc) was a 1985 Honda CR125. Recently, recently, in the attic looking for a leak, I came across an unused set of JT Racing pads, boots, etc. The heat of 35 years in the attic took it's toll. I stored all that stuff with hopes of one day racing again. Fond memories.

    If you want to soften rubber parts like that boot, mix wintergreen oil with rubbing alcohol (not the pre-mix) at a 3:1 ratio (3 parts alcohol to 1 part WG oil) and let the part soak a couple of days. Brings it back to like new condition. I haven't done it in a long time, but the last time I did it it worked well. It doesn't sweat either. You can re-use it a lot of times too.

    • @5150mxVW
      @5150mxVW  4 года назад +1

      that is a great tip ! Thank you

    • @tarstarkusz
      @tarstarkusz 4 года назад +3

      Funny thing is, there is only one series of videos on YT about it. The guy did a series comparing brake fluid, the pre-mix green rubbing alcohol, the mixture I described and just rubbing alcohol alone. The brake fluid worked OK, but it sweated later on. The winter-green oil and rubbing alcohol restored the part, a rubber motorcycle boot back to like new softtness. The other things had no effect.

    Man im loving your cr videos I had your first one pop up on my recommendation videos and watched it and automatically started following you seems like your actually showing step by step work and not editing and skipping important procedures that some new guys might not know how to do. I just finished rebuilding a 85 cr 125 I bought last year and I'm in the process of completley restoring a 1987 Honda cr 125r I bought last year for 300$ even painted the frame with the factory paint code Honda flash red I purchased from color rite if you do yours but I've replaced everything new so far other then the frame swing arm rear shock air box seat front forks wheels gas tank and the engine but I can't wait to keep tuning in and seeing you're come along great work dude👍

And I also have a question for you on your 85 I haven't rode mine since the rebuild but I have to order a clutch cable I had a brand new one for my 87 and put it in my 85 and when you work the end of the cable back and forth it will come unhooked from inside the motor not sure if the 87 cable will work on a 85 or not

    I bought one of these for racing in 88' as a teenager. Good to know what it was like on the inside after all these years. I pulled out the throttle plunger one day (don't ask me why) and managed to put it back in the wrong orientation (it only fits one way so I don't know how I managed it). It failed to kick over so I asked my old man to give me a push start down the driveway. It fired over at full throttle by the time I reached the street and proceeded to take off with me on it. Straight through the neighbours crusty old brick wall. The bike survived but I lost my nerve and sold it shortly after.

    I found it easiest to use a 90 degree pick to get the radiator hoses off. Just slip it in between and work it all the way around.
    Built a 1989 CR125 for myself a few years ago. Came out great! Did a 1988 CR125 for a friend a year before that....a 1987 CR125 2 years before that.....and a 1986 CR125 (mine) back in 1989. Really miss my 1986 CR125 the most! Great bikes.....

    That parts bike that was given to you by Chris was a great score. It looks like it's in better shape than the first bike you were taking apart. You might need to find another parts bike to end up with one good bike. At least those bikes don't take up much space, and they are easy to hide from the wife.......

    • @5150mxVW
      @5150mxVW  4 года назад +4

      Great score from Chris indeed ! The parts bike has a lot of good parts that have not seen the weather like this bike has . Haha, no they don't take up much room and it's in the garage not the driveway / yard :)...They were cheap too , I only have a 100.00 tip ( I insisted ) in the parts bike which is still a GIFT.
      thank you 65BN , have a nice weekend .

    After stumbling upon your channel from part 1, I’m gonna request videos 7 days a week😂 boy I was just as surprised as you to see that swing arm bolt come free. I’m in the process of rebuilding my yz490, and had the same situation. Every bolt came right out (it was like winning the lottery) but my rear axle took about a half hour of finessing with a mallet and ratchet extensions to pound it through

    • @5150mxVW
      @5150mxVW  4 года назад

      Nice thumbnail pic👍....haha, thank u . YZ490 , very cool ! yes , I might have to sacrifice that rear axle to the beatings ...the left side of it is already pretty corroded and i have another one ....i just hate destroying parts as I'm shocked how hard some these parts have been to find . The 490 is a cool bike , good luck with it .

I really can't believe there are parts available still for these bikes. That's awesome! Can't wait to hear it fire up! I just finished rebuilding 2 1990 XR80R for my kids. Before I start to take everything apart I like to spray WD40 everywhere I see a bolt or a pivot joint. Let it sit there all night and then everything comes off like a new bike.

      that's awesome , well done Dad👍. In part one I soaked the bike in almost 2 cans of PB Blaster , spraying it multiple times and let it sit for a week :) . This bike has been outside for almost it's entire life it appears , the lower spoke nipples are disintegrated👍.

    95% of people have more in their (newer) cars than they are worth on any given day. You buy a car for X dollars and 6 months later it's worth less than it was the day you bought it. Cars and motorcycles are not investments. If you like something, the real question is 'what is it worth TO ME?' and not 'do I have more money in this than I could sell it for?'
    The only way that equation makes sense is if what you want is a really common car and that it would be a lot cheaper to just buy it from someone else than to spend the money to fix the one you have. But the market is rarely that generous to you.

    • @5150mxVW
      @5150mxVW  4 года назад +2

      You nailed it ! People see some ( about all lol ) of my projects and say it's not worth fixing . I'm not fixing them for resale or value , I work on / invest in them for the sheer joy of it . This is a passion and hobby of mine . Most of my motorcycles are bikes that I had racing in the 90's or lusted after as a kid . As for the cars , I keep the ones that talk to me no matter their condition or value . There is no way financially speaking , fixing this bike makes sense . I bought an running 86 CR125R a few years ago for $300 and they can still be had for cheap. Thank you for the great comment

  • @troyrosenbaugh9935

    Tech Tip: replace all those screw with 8 or 10 mm headed bolts same lengths. I always do with vintage repairs, easier to fix later if it needs it. I keep various bolt kits in my shop here, specifically for that purpose. No drain plug. Someone forgot to put it back in. I'll bet.
