  • I made a leather sheath to protect my round knife. in the last couple of videos I made a damascus round knife for myself. Now that it is finished it needs a sheath to cover the edge to protect it and more importantly to help prevent accidentally cut fingers.

That's awesome man. You make it look easy to come up with a beautiful product. I've tried a couple times to make a sheath for my knife and it ends up looking like a kid made it....but i wanna learn because if I can ever get more into knife making I'd hate to sell a kife without a nice sheath. And kydex is cool and all....but it ain't leather.

I have made quite a few knife sheaths to replace bad or poor fitting sheaths that came with knives. Kydex is good for some things, it is better than leather for wet environments for example a sheath for a fillet knife in someones fishing tackle box. Leather has that classic style that goes well with custom handmade knives. The texture that they mold into one side of most kydex sheets is supposed to be a leather grain texture.

Nice work. What was the border tool you used and how far apart were the lines for the border.

This one is a Craftool D443 the lines are about 1/4 inch apart. The D444 is a bigger version of the same tool and needs lines about 3/8 inch apart.

Wonderful job. Thanks for the inspiration. Which sewing machine do you use may I ask?

Very cool. I need to make one of these. What oz leather did you use?

I think I used 6-7 oz leather lined with a piece that was about 3 oz. You could do the same thing just using 4-5 for both the exterior and the lining. If you don't want to do the extra steps to line it I would suggest about 8-9 oz. The welt or spacer piece will need to be just a little thicker than the blade of the knife you plan to put in the sheath.
