- Since I'm making a compilation of everyone doing the lick, a lot of people have been asking how do you even play the lick? Well, here it is!

*By the way, people are saying in the 3rd measure, beat 3 should be an F natural instead of E because it would walk down the bebop scale. But no, I checked at least 10 times from the recording, very slowed down. I assure you my notes are right. It’s definitely an E, not an F natural!!

marko polo 2 No learn it by ear that’s the best way to do literally anything. You’ll retain the info so much easier because you will have spent the time going note by note. When you learn something on paper, you have to keep going back to the paper.

A Jazz musicians grasp on chords and progressions, and how fast they can transfer ideas to different keys is something I will forever try to comprehend as a classical musician.
im a classical musician and I am learning jazz. Its all about the numbers!
stop thinking about notes and think about numbers.
Any major scale: 1 2 3 4 5 6 7
so if you are on Db major: Db (1) Eb (2) F (3) Gb (4) Ab (5) Bb (6) C (7)
you want to make it dominant? good ol "mixolidian scale" : 1 2 3 4 5 6 b7 you flatten the 7. 7 in Db is C. flatten that you get Cb. Why look at that: Db F Ab Cb => Db dominant chord :D also known as 1 3 5 b7.
Now all you really need to know very well is all your scales (most importantly the major scales) of every key. and then you just flat or sharp the notes you want to get all the other scales you want.
this is the magic sauce. then they practice all kinds of scales and chords and w/e . even in their sleep :D.
Then you need to: listen to a shit ton of music, transcribe solos (in all 12 keys) and then try to incorporate that in your solos.

Even as an Orchestra kid up until my senior year of high school. Got into it because I loved Jazz and wanted to learn music theory, but we ended up playing 98% powdered wig music and we barely learned much of any music theory. Trying to learn it on my own is like learning a foreign language that for some reason just doesn't click no matter how much information you consume. So needless to say, I seriously appreciate what you've done here on like 5 or 6 levels because this is beyond impressive. Also any tips would be appreciated B)
With enough tutorials it’s possible. Though, a private instructor is extremely valuable!

4:52 this enclosure (B-D-Db-B-C, in which C is the target note and Db is a chromatic tone) is ridiculously common in jazz language, extremely effective at any tempo, and yet so little talked about. I'd say the soul of this lick is the fact that it is used twice in this sequence.
I saw a notif for this video during marching band practice and I already knew what I was about to watch when I got home.

@@carl7018 oh ya, I almost forgot about that. I sometimes don't care about music sheets because I prefer tabs (since it's easier to understand)
@@KoekoReaps you can learn the notes from this with basic knowledge of music notation, cause ya know its a lick with single notes and not THAT MUCH of complicated piece it's just hard to get it up to speed, but you could always learn the notes by ear :p.
@@KoekoReaps there's a few tips he provides in the video to explain the logic behind certain phrases e.g. "enclosure around the F" so you get an idea of the "shape" involved
This is impressive, but can you play the lick while playing Mario kart?
I know this is old, but here is a tip for trumpet players trying to learn this lick that helped me: on beat 3 of the first measure with the inverted G minor 7 arpeggio, play the D with the alternate fingering of valves 1 and 3 instead of the usual 1st valve fingering, since otherwise you have to lip slur between F, D, and Bb, which is tough to do at full speed. Might want to adjust your third valve slide to get the note in tune, but if you're playing it full speed you probably can't hear the intonation anyway.
