I'm surprised no one mentioned KISS. Also there were several acts from the late 60s / early 70s who could've been contenders if not for drugs and personnel issues: Grand Funk Railroad, 3 Dog Night, Chicago with Terry Kath.
Talking Heads. They still sound contemporary, 40 years later. And they could play in a variety of styles, pop, funk, afro beat, rock. And they didn't make a bad album. And they made the greatest live concert film ever.
I’m gonna say beach boys just because of the technical difficulty of what they did and how all the legends of rock ‘n’ roll speak about Brian Wilson specifically. But that’s not really a question I ever thought of and now that you brought it up, I’m thinking about it and it is kinda hard because most of the great dance are English Australian and not from America.

Interesting that the most globally famous American musical acts are solo artist. (Michael Jackson, Prince, Madonna, Beyonce, Tina Turner, Taylor Swift, Whitney Houston, Billy Joel, Bruce Springsteen etc.). American infividualism at its finest, I guess. FYI: Bon Jovi at $1.32B barely outpacing the Eagles at $1.31B and Metallica at $1.2B for highest grossing concert sales among American bands. Bruce Springteen with the E Street Band is $1.9B, in case you consider them a band more than a well-backed solo act.

What's even worse than not mentioning some of the best bands in the USA is putting up the Eagles and Green Day as two of the best. I grew scared he was going to recommend Nickelback and turned the video off.
