And the word "Stan" was officially added to the Oxford English Dictonary in 2017. I don't think any other rapper have their own word in the dictonary

Fun fact. Eminem have always been accused of being homophobic and he was getting tired of it, so when he was asked to perform this at the Grammys in 2001 he said he would only do it if Elton John would so Didos part, which he did, to show the world he isn't homophobic.
Em and Sir Elton are still friends and Elton was a big support to Em when he got sober.

Yes, it hasn't exactly happened with Stan, but Eminem represented something that happens in reality, tragedies like Christine Gimmie, the Bjork fan was one of the most terrible cases, and others that I can't remember now.
in 2020 a man broke into Eminems house claiming he was there to kill him, the guys name was Matthew, he was 26 years old. In stan the little brother was 6 years old and named Matthew, and it was 20 years since Stan came out. Pretty weird ngl lol

If I'm not mistaken, that was actually a meaning that was derived after the fact, presumably by people who didn't know the actual origin (being that it came from this song).
I Googled quickly just to double check before posting this, but I can't find any reference to Eminem naming him Stan because of this. I think people just saw other people using the term, and assumed that it was short for that.
This is why when the word stan started to go around as a way to signify how much you liked an artist, I couldn't believe it. The word stan will always take me back to this song. I always thought that Eminem was cautioning everyone over idolization of celebrities

I heard this song for the first time when I was on a long walk with my dog. I started paying attention to the lyrics and went into the song with absolutely no expectation. However, the story Stan told was so absorbing that I completely forgot where I was. Seven minutes later I realized that I hadn't noticed anything about my surroundings the entire time and was now already in the forest. In my opinion Stan is an absolute masterpiece as far as storytelling goes

The kid dyed his hair bc he looked up to his brother not Eminem and what’s sad is Stan wanted to be someone else and didn’t even realize he had his brother looking up and wanting to be like him.

While the story in this song is fictional the crazy thing is that last year a fan broke into eminem's house, and it turns out not only was his name Matthew, but he was also the same age that Stan's younger brother would be.

In the 60s 70s when I first started listening to music you only got to hear or see artists on the radio/tv, or buy their records(vinyl) there was Beatle mania where girls passed out at concerts and queued for days to see John, Paul, George and Ringo, I loved Rod Stewart and my sister loved Marc Bolan, our bedroom walls were plastered with cut out pictures of them, but that was as far as it went, now with social media fans want more and more from their idols, for a few they go to extremes, I think it must be very frightening for artists today, they are not allowed a private life, I love the fact that RUclips and the rest of social media bring anything I want right into my home, but I also recognise the down side.
Sometimes I truly felt bad about my own fixation towards singers, athletes and people I admire but then I realise I slowly drifted away from some many fandoms? Or stopped being a fan of many artists and that put me on a peace. There are many people like this stanley on the fandom I'm currently in, having their entire room plastered with posters, cutboards, buying thousands of merch etc and I find that excessive. But each to their own I guess

Yes, it seems extreme looking back on this track as an adult, but I was around when Eminem blew up and he was a cultural phenomenon. There were a lot of stans. I've always been more interested in the art than the artist. Otherwise, I might have been somewhat of a stan myself. Played the fuck out of the first three albums.
Fun fact, the guy who did the character of Stan is also the main character in the original Final Destination, Devon Sawa

@SuffiReax btw Dido (pronounced DIE-do) had an earlier track called Thank You which Eminem "sampled" with collaboration with her. It got to #3 on Billboard Hot 100 back in 2001, ironically though it was released as a single AFTER "Stan". However it was first released on the soundtrack of the film "Sliding Doors" in 1998 and then featured on her Debut album the next year. At the end of the song you can see Stan in the window next to Eminem for a split second from the lightning.

I feel like Stan/Bad Guy together will be dissected in English/music classes in the future. Separate they are brilliant but together, they are a masterpiece and I don’t even think that’s an overreaction. Darkness is another extremely underrated piece of work.
“97 Bonnie & Clyde is a bit of a prequel to this song and “Bad Guy” is the sequel.

This is late but someone pointed it out so i decided to metion it, at 11:05 after Stan had already passed, and Eminem figures out it was him, if you look in the window you'll see Stan looking at Eminem, showing he was still obsessed with him even after death
