Onshore vs. Offshore Wind

  • What is the difference between an onshore and an offshore wind?
The best way to think about this is if you were to put a cup of water and a piece of metal out on a hot day...
You wait a few hours, and then you put your finger in.
That water might be slightly warmer, but if you touch that metal, you're going to burn your finger.
The reason for that is because metal heats up faster than water.
Well, the same thing happens between land and water.
During the day, the land heats up a lot faster.
The air above that land heats up, it becomes less dense, and it rises.
That creates a pressure gradient and allows winds to flow onshore.
Now, the exact opposite happens at nighttime.
The land cools off a lot faster than the water, creating descending air.
That air bumps into the ground and then flows offshore.
And that's the difference between onshore and offshore winds.
