    I remember going deep about background processes when I got a cheapo 250€ laptop for highschool in 2008. It came preinstalled with Windows Vista for which it was extremely underpowered. I got it down to the bare minimum with XP, and it ran faster/better then a lot of the way better laptops some of my friends had. It was at that time that a spark in me was lit for performance-optimization, a real respect for ram-usage and computing resources. That spark made me a better software-engineer in the long run, since I tend to feel dirty if something simple takes way too much resources. Something I see constantly in the modern JavaScript-Ecosystem.

    Seems to me the cheaper the pc/laptop, the more process count matters. You can't have a process without memory use afaik, and manufacturers are still selling price point devices with 4gb memory with slow and small (swap file etc) emmc storage.

    It's all about " The PC interactions feel worse, Lets check what's changed "
    It was the case that you'll have a relatively constant list of processes , and a new one appearing is probably the one responsible when something goes wrong, you'll remove that problematic app or restrict it.
    But, the amount of processes and services that CHANGE every month became a problem,
    so "focus on count" right?!,
    but:
    more apps/abilities/sale-options on your small PC ->
    more demand on HW ->
    more access restrictions ->
    more grab-whatever-you-can attitude by apps on resources ->
    more inter-app commerce ->
    more detailed comm restrictions ->
    Looking at the "process count" just won't cut it anymore.
    We to conduct a personal update review, for any update of/within any app, and use a tester-app - that also gives us one place on the PC UI - to find "all updates to any app/driver/os in the past week". replacing the "process manager" for the mentioned scenario.
    hopefuly the tester app Menus won't change their functionality or appearence every month :)

    while this is true in technicality, in any real-world case between comparable systems process count is a fine heuristic. It can be very inacurrate when you start comparing systems that have very little in common (for instance IIRC linux process counts can be in the 500s for a basic desktop environment yet run faster than a windows machine under a fifth of that) but between vaguely similar systems this is more of a "hey did you know that frankenstein was the na-" *_yes_*

      @xXRealXx 2 месяца назад +2

      Speaking of how good modern CPUs are... Previously, I had an FX-6350 and now I have a 7600X and it's insane how much better it is. Like, the most surprising thing to me was that I could use my PC just fine even if the CPU is at 100% load, like when running a benchmark or mining monero. If I did that on my old pc, it would've been almost unusable. Although it only had a modernish 7200 RPM 2 TB HDD and only 8 GB of RAM, and now I have a 2 TB NVME SSD (Kingston KC3000) and 32 GB of RAM so that could play into this, but I doubt that even with a SATA SSD and more ram it wouldn't be still very slow under a full load.

    General questions, not related to this video (not sure if there's a place on your site to pose a question):
    I have two annoying issues with Windows 11.
    1. I can't remove an additional language I added before from GUI. I do that, it returns back after a restart. MS says to reinstall it and then uninstall, same thing, it returns. I attempted some registry fix I don't recall now that also didn't work (there was no second language to remove).
    2. Windows "spotlight" search is activated with alt+space. Where do I remove this a horrible thing that keeps removing the focus from the game I'm playing in the middle of the action? What is it called?
    Keep the tips coming, and thank you!
    **edit**
    The windows "spotlight" feature I was talking about is part of powertools, which I do have installed. Its name is actually "powertoy run". It can be disabled from the options for power toos (gear icon in the system tray, you need to scroll a bit).

    What we have here are several types of users. If you still have Edge running in the background on your system you are one type of user. If you don't have edge running in the background anymore you are another type of user. If you don't have edge, defender, the store, and a pile of other crap no longer running in the background on your system, you probably don't care, and certainly have no "delta" issues.

    Hello chris,
    After watching your tier vid i tried nobara on a secondary ssd for the first time. I think it went well and i think the os is great (i only play world of warcraft at a very competitive level and other games i dont look for maximising performance).
    However with kde 6 coming and nobara not being rolling edge i decided to go back to windows for a bit while waiting for the big guys to update stuff as hdr is a big deal for me and there are a lot of bugs, i'm not into learning stuff by myself to make my distro optimised for my needs even though i agree this is the whole point of linux. Just not for now.
    That being said i kept watching other videos and i heard about a distro called cachy os which i am going try out soon as it is rolling edge with lots of optimisations and CPU specific instructions and having nvidia gpu i want the latest updates.
    My question is : did you ever try cachy os and do you think its pointless and would advice arch ? If not, would you consider giving it a go ? I feel like this might have something very promising for gamers.

I don't care all that much how *many* processes there are, as long as the number is not excessive; in other words, a lower number is preferrable, but as long as it's not a bunch of 100% unnecessary and unused processes artificially inflating process count, then it's fine with me.
    Windows already comes with useless processes out the ass, but you're right that just adding something like antivirus (people do that these days?) or installing a bunch of game launchers and having them all start at login and run in the background will really make a noticeable effect on the performance of a machine. Just one reason I stopped using that OS entirely by around 2006, as Microsoft was trying to foist Vista upon XP users.

    No matter what I do, the best way to take control of your computer is Linux. Is this "Windows Wednesday" turning into "I'll just make videos about windows"? Weekly Windows? I'm just asking. Whatever you do, don't sell your soul to Cthulhu!
    Or Cthapple.
    Just asking! I'm sure Microsoft has it's points, and I'm just think, if indeed I think, is easier to handle. And start!
    To be really fair, Windows needs to go to their microtransactions, renting scheme, to survive. Just my opinion.
    And "phone Home" what is that all about? I have a licence, and they're delaying my startup by checking if I really, I mean really, have a license to use their shitty OS? Really?
    Go back to talking about Linux, this Windows crap is just as useful as a barrel full of walrusses! "Here's another problem with Windows 11, and you can't do shit about it" Yay?

    i guess the process count makes no more sense since windows 10, this is valid only until 7 and in my case i just use as parameter to ensure is running all well after fresh install or to ensure that system is clean. After whole redesign in 8 and new storage technologies coming like ssds this not more a big problem, the process counting is more valid to PCs running with HDD because their speed limitation and latency.

    same for RAM usage. preloading stuff intelligently into RAM if the user has enough takes load off the SSD. not using compression in RAM takes load from the CPU. if you have it, use it.

    The multi tasking capabilties of the CPU does matter and enough RAM, software must be compiled with the right tools and make use of thhe multi core features , but in essense n one wil ever be ware that many services are active , you're not thee only user is a OS, it's a time slicer design , always has beeen., i have a mini pc's with 8 core cpu's it;s smooth was also with Intel core I7 always responsive i do not believe in tweaking the OS , you won't notice that they are active.
