      but Korriban final as Dark side path was better IMO.
      Not only do you take on every Sith already in the level, but also all the Jedi there who would have helped you if you chose to spare that little shit Rosh(?). You get these crazy 3 way fights thru the level as you try to screw everyone over by taking the power-staff for yourself.
      Also fighting Kyle Katarn at the end was cooler than fighting a spooky ghost.

    Jedi Outcast understood that damage done on enemy character models is what makes a lightsaber feel like a real lightsaber. In the recent Battlefront series it feels like a glow stick because zero damage is visible after slashing away. Mild burn marks on clothing would've been enough to showcase how dangerously hot sabers are to the touch, but no, there's n o t h i n g .

      Yeah no, it was your basic hack and slash variety in both games, episode 3 was however the best 1vs1'beatem up' type game available what with the combos and different movesets, but for saber combat pick the Jedi knight games up they are the only ones that come anywhere close to semi realistic duels even if the learning curve is steep.

      The only thing about the game I wish were better is that the force powers weren’t so restrictive. It’ll give you these spots that you HAVE to force jump in that spot ONLY instead of traversing the levels and figuring out how to use the force powers your own way. The combat is still solid and the lightsaber battles are the highlight of the game.

  • @legateelizabeth

    I think one of the major reasons people enjoy Jedi Outcast/Academy's saber combat can be boiled down to one thing:
    You can move while attacking.
    I know that sounds like such a minor thing, but in every other Star Wars game I'm aware of and have played, you stop moving when you swing your saber. Even in Force Unleashed, where plenty of your attacks come with a degree of movement, you still lose control when you're doing them. Outcast and Academy let you keep running in whatever direction you were going, back up, jump etc in tandem with attacking, which made you feel super mobile, and even let you feel like you could mow through mooks with no problem better than TFU's hallway-clearing force pushes can. I mean, the ability to do all those moves and jump off walls and such was fun too, but the simple thing of never taking control away from the player made it feel like a part of you - which is how a saber should feel, like part of it's user, the player.

    • @jlhill17
      @jlhill17 5 лет назад +7

      This^. I love how mobile you can be in Jedi Outcast/Academy. One of my favorite features is how your saber swings are different depending on which direction you are moving. Academy went a step further to introduce combos which made saber combat even more varied.

    • @placeholdername3206
      @placeholdername3206 5 лет назад +3

      Only real problem was the special moves which I remember the community called "butterflying". Even tho they were predictable and locked you into a long animation of flurry acrobatic moves and swings, you could still one shot other players with it. It was frowned upon and seen as noobish to even use them. Especially with dual sabers.

    • @minerva9104
      @minerva9104 5 лет назад +9

      The original Battlefront 2 allowed you to move while attacking, but had very simple if well animated lightsaber combat that was just left clicking.

    • @Drewlette
      @Drewlette 2 года назад

      Star Wars: Obiwan also allowed you to stay on the move while attacking. The game gets a lot of flak for many reasons, but if you're able to truly master the controls I think it does a great job of making you feel like you have full agency over your lightsaber.

    My favorite combat was from Star Wars Jedi Knight: Jedi Academy. It played like Outcast and even though you could not switch it later at one point it gives you the option to choose between single , dual, or dualblade lightsabers, which have different movies associated with them and also allowed you to change between stances.
    Like Outcast you were able to run along walls and being able to back flip and with the dual blade your dodges were quite acrobatic. To me Outcast and Academy are the games that made you feel like real Jedi.

    KOTOR is an easy second place.

    • @petesperandio
      @petesperandio 7 лет назад +30

      Definitely not the worst. Star Wars Kinect exists. However, lightsaber combat, melee combat,and ranged combat in KotOR are all essentially identical, so it isn't much higher than the worst. KotOR and especially KotOR II definitely have better plots and far more intricate and beloved characters, but they suffer when it comes to gameplay, although I will say that I'm a big fan of the melee animations that go on. Makes the game that bit more immersive.

    Thing is that Jedi academy is still being modded to this day, constantly improving its combat system. The Dark Forces / Jedi Knight series has always had consistent, and great controls. JO and JA especially. One of the craziest techniques I've seen and still see online is the ability to move your mouse quick enough and accurately enough to essentially hold your blade still inside an enemy's body while performing attack combinations. It usually ends of being a 1 hit kill and breaks all blocks.

    Saying that jedi knight outcast has a not a very technical combatsystem tells me how poor your understanding is. Playing in various esports 1vs1 non force lightsaber duel tournaments and leagues I can say it is very very technical. Every stroke with the lightsaber has to be planned out very carefully and you will not be able to win against anyone who has more understanding about the different types of the attacks and stances.

    Something i enjoy in Star Wars KOTOR is lightsaber customization.
    It really matters in your campaign and gives you a sensation of unique, that the lightsaber is not oblivious to you, a weapon the game pushes in your character, there's a meaning on it, etc.
    Although the duel is not real time based, strikes and force powers are very well integrated, and you can feel the game punishing you if you don't use it wisely, for exemple, being beated without a chance of victory by bosses.
    Character class, distribution of points in force powers, habilities, lightsaber customization, all that matters! Not to mention game's history... omg!

    The system born in Outcast is the only one I know of that treats lightsabers like laser swords, not glowing baseball bats. In every other Star Wars game I can think of, you just whack enemies (sometimes physically knocking them around, somehow) until they fall down, and if there's any use of acrobatics, it's usually a just jumping straight up and coming straight down again, stabbing the ground with a lightsaber somehow producing a shockwave.
    In Outcast and Academy, if you run up to someone with your saber drawn, standing close enough that your stance has it clipping through their body, it'll slowly kill them even if you don't press any kind of attack button.

    Well I don't agree with your statement when you said Jk2:JO lightsaber combat was not focused on precision but rather fluid momentum. That might be somewhat true only in the single player game but it is far more important to be accurate with your strikes and parries in the multiplayer game. So often was I slain when I failed to line up a devastating slash overhead and was miffed when I couldn't connect with a fast combo. It's reticle is very useful and sometimes you can use it to perform a special acrobatic strike.

    For me it's episode 3. That game was designed exclusively around saber combat. Even for it being a hack n' slash it was really fluid and closer represented the saber fighting we saw in the movie. You could block a lot frequently and the ability to pull off combos and do special moves was very rewarding. It's still one of the few games that has a duel mode. I'm glad I still have it, it's still very fun.

    Jedi Outcast hands down. You can utilize three lightsaber disciplines: weak/fast, slow/powerful, normal. Use the control stick with your swings to swing in different directions, even add in a jump to do crazy jump saber flips. Also the best part that made Jedi Outcast really sell well: PC version online play and Jedi Arena. Join a server, lightsabers only, you'll have a blast wrecking players online in lightsaber duels. Plus you can get your friends, chat with them, and set up private rooms to either do machinimas, RPs, or 1v1s. trust me, you'll have fun. ^w^

    I disagree on one thing, and that is your conclusion that the lightsaber combat in Jedi Outcast is "not precise and built more around movement and traversal." This kinda depends on how you play. If you jump around like a madman swinging wildly and hoping for the best, sure. And don't get me wrong, that's a legit and often fun way to play. But you can also be cautious and calculating, trying to anticipate what your opponent will do and react accordingly. It's possible to fight the Reborn "samurai style" where the two of you just stare at each other for a while and then the fight ends in a single exchange. (Especially if you crank up the saber damage and dismemberment to realistic levels.)
    The reason for this is that the lightsaber can attack from eight different directions depending on how you move Kyle around, which is a very simple and intuitive way of doing it. Add to that the fact that any time a lightsaber blade strikes another lightsaber blade for _any reason,_ it counts as a parry. (Which is something I wish more games would do - usually the weapons just pass through each other unless you hit a parry button.)
    So if you and your opponent both do a forwards vertical swing, or diagonal swings with intersecting vectors, it becomes a parry or blade lock assuming you time it right since you are slamming your sabers into each other. But if your opponent does a vertical swing and you see him raise his arms, you can do a quick horizontal swing across his torso where his guard is open. As a bonus, doing so will usually cause you to sidestep his attack as well. This is, basically, a simplified version of what actual swordsmen try to do: Reading the opponent's movements and attempting to strike an opening without getting hit themselves.
    Because of this, Jedi Outcast allows for both quick, fairly realistic lightsaber duels which make you feel very skilled, as well as the kind of epic, minute-long "flynning" duels we see in the movies, depending on your play style, patience and temperament. This is not just the best lightsaber combat I've ever seen in a Star Wars game to date (though I'm cautiously optimistic about Fallen Order, which I have yet to play) but possibly the best _sword-fighting mechanic_ I've ever seen period.
    (Jedi Academy was just more of the same, and I think I liked it a bit more as a Star Wars game/Jedi simulator, though I recall having some trouble gaining the same amount of fine skill with the dual and double-bladed sabers.)

    • @_Seru_
      @_Seru_ 4 года назад +1

      I'm honestly amazed how the AI can respond to what you're doing in those old games. You're indeed correct, if you're 1v1 there are times when both you and the AI can stop fighting for a while and just exchange hits from time to time without jumping around. Sometimes the AI even "mocks" you by turning its lightsaber off. Of course if you decide to jump around, the AI opponent is going to do the same and the battle feels like pure chaos. Basically you can replicate the lightsaber duels from the prequels (flashy, more chaotic stuff) and from the original trilogy (slower pace, more calculated moves) - and the AI opponents allow whatever you choose! Outcast and Academy had more love put into them than any of the newer action SW games (I'm excluding RPGs like KoTORs, it's not fair comparing them since they're completely different). And since you can spawn enemies in those games through console, you can create random lightsaber duels whenever you want on whatever map you want.

      @@_Seru_ Man, I spent _so_ much time spawning Reborn in interesting locations just to have cool fights. Sometimes I spawned in dozens of the weakest type and set the ligthsaber damage to maximum, just to see how many I could take out before one of them landed a good hit.

    • @_Seru_
      @_Seru_ 4 года назад

      @@RelativelyBest One of my favorite spots to create random fights was Hoth in Academy, the map is huge compared to most others and this Imperial "fortress" there was really cool. Recently I downloaded a mod called Knights of the Force (if I'm not mistaken it's for both Outcast and Academy), it doesn't change the combat system but it adds a lot of maps from the movies/other games and a lot of spawnable characters from practically every era (Old Republic, Clone Wars, original trilogy), so you can for example fight as Obi-Wan against Vader on the Death Star (or the other way around) if you want. It's basically base game plus tons of new models and maps, you can play a random map and just spawn whatever you want. They even added a spawn menu, so you don't need to bother with the console.

    I think one nice thing about the force unleashed (I haven't played the wii port in years so i'm not sure if it applies to it as well) was how the levels where basically littered with intractable objects, all could be lifted, thrown about or used as stepping stone using the force, you can even use lighting on some of them for some extra effects. It helped lend to the importance of your force powers like nothing short of a jedi could clear these levels as you craft stairways using broken tie fighter pieces.

    Fair enough. I have a soft spot for that level in the Episode 3 game for PS2 where Anakin first turns to the dark side and your mission is to go to the Archives. So many young foolish Jedi got levitated above the ground, choked, and then stabbed with a lightsaber in that level, ah fun times.

    I still feel like we need more "direct-control" melee/superpower games like these. I'm talking in general now, but star wars themed with a nice campaign would really *really* make me happy ;D

    Check out Star Wars Obi-Wan, it has an epic ligtsaber gameplay, and it's levels are insanely hard.

    Star Wars Obi Wan for the Original Xbox was my all time favorite game growing up. The lightsaber was controlled entirely by the right stick. It made for really entertaining gameplay.

    There is one reason among others why Academy and Outcast stand out from the crowd. Lightsaber experience is what you'd expect it to be. One swing of laser blade is enough to slaughter an average oponent. For this one reason you can appreciate power of jedi weapon and immediately reject all the blasters and less elegant weapons handled by average mortals.

    Jedi knights Jedi academy for the first Xbox is officially why I have trouble playing other star wars games. The satisfaction it gave me to either be a Sith or jedi, saber or force kill, crush bones against walls with grip or remove their arms before slowly decapitating them. It didn't matter. So far the ultimate star wars game for me. But you mention some ok ones, thank you.

    Has this guy not heard of the RoTS video game? It has some of the best lightsaber combat I've ever seen . It's like a 3-D fighting game. The only thing holding it back was content.

      The Louster it is a fun game, but what he was looking for for a video was to stray away from a Hack-and-slash game but more on a unique take using a light saber.

    • @kennethleo4471

      yeah but the thing is it also had the most advanced light-saber combat out of every star wars game I've ever seen.

      griz312 ^This. It may be a hack and slash game, but it was still a good one, and a very good one at that, which makes me think it deserves recognition for it.

    I remember spending hundreds of hours in Jedi Outcast's multiplayer. Just sinking entire afternoons in different servers dueling people 1 on 1. Other players would stand around and watch duels, and then fight the winner. Etc. There was actual etiquette.
    No game has really been able to do lightsaber combat better than Jedi Outcast/Jedi Academy. And even those games could've done it a lot better. No game has gotten it "right" yet.
    I did have a lot of fun with the Revenge of the Sith game on Xbox though. It was surprisingly fun for a cookie cutter single player hack & slash type game.

    I love Jedi Academy/Outcast, but I don't understand how anyone feels like it is the pinnacle of lightsaber combat...I often feel like Im swinging the lightsaber around like a baseball bat with all the characters. The Episode 3 game on Xbox had the best lightsaber combat in my opinion, but was limited with its short character roster, but every character felt unique in how they played. For example, Anakin was very aggressive in his signature Djem So stance. Dooku's was portrayed as more elegant, akin to his makashi stance. Windu was all over the place, emulating vaapaad. I only wish there were more characters. *sigh* we'll never see another game like that though. Not with Disney/EA at the helm of all future Star Wars content. They also tend to take the stance that a lightsaber is a baseball bat and should be used as such...
