+Jocelyn Dickman Agreed, it's quite different from the original version in my estimation. The original was sung as being sad and this one is sung as mad.
My favorite interpretation, which I heard as part of a Lincoln Center Follies a few years ago iirc, was more controlled-mad. Also on RUclips I think, will check. Different enough from both...
Before this I listened to Bernadettes's "Not a Day goes by" and then to "Losing my mind" - when I clicked this, the title made me think "Huh, I wasn't aware that so many of Sondheim's ladies were just singing about their love for their man..." I was pleasantly surprised by this awesome song and performance! :D
Leave you? Leave you? How could I leave you? How could I go it alone? Could I wave the years away With a quick goodbye? How do you wipe tears away When your eyes are dry? Sweetheart, lover, Could I recover, Give up the joys I have known? Not to fetch your pills again Every day at five, Not to give those dinners for ten Elderly men From the U.N.-- How could I survive? Could I leave you And your shelves of the World's Best Books And the evenings of martyred looks, Cryptic sighs, Sullen glares from those injured eyes? Leave the quips with a sting, jokes with a sneer, Passionless lovemaking once a year? Leave the lies ill-concealed And the wounds never healed And the games not worth winning And-wait, I'm just beginning! What, leave you, leave you, How could I leave you? What would I do on my own? Putting thoughts of you aside In the south of France, Would I think of suicide? Darling, shall we dance? Could I live through the pain On a terrace in Spain? Would it pass? It would pass. Could I bury my rage With a boy half your age In the grass? Bet your ass. But I've done that already--or didn't you know, love? Tell me, how could I leave when I left long ago, love? Could I leave you? No, the point is, could you leave me? Well, I guess you could leave me the house, Leave me the flat, Leave me the Braques and Chagalls and all that. You could leave me the stocks for sentiment's sake And ninety percent of the money you make. And the rugs And the cooks-- Darling, you keep the drugs. Angel, you keep the books, Honey, I'll take the grand, Sugar you keep the spinet And all of our friends and-- Just wait a goddam minute! Oh, leave you? Leave you? How could I leave you? Sweetheart, I have to confess: Could I leave you? Yes. Will I leave you? Will I leave you? Guess!
Also - for those who hear a certain lyric (at least) affinity to 'The Last Midnight' - remember, Sondheim is the master of 'the list' song - and he knows it. What greater dramatic challenge for actors than to nail the psychology behind a song that is, ostensibly, an objective inventory. 'The Ladies Who Lunch' is mainly a list song - it contains no inherent dramatic build - the singer must put it there. One of the best ensemble list songs is 'Something Just Broke' from 'Assassins', which is simply multiple actors accounting "Where they were when..." but to anyone who has one or many "Where I was when..." moments, the subtext is clear and heart-rending.
Though I know Ms. Murphy is not everyone's favourite Broadway personality, it cannot be denied that she is one of the great actors of the musical stage (I may be betraying my prejudice but I can't imagine anyone ever playing 'Fosca' in 'Passion', the way she did - as if she co-authored the role) - and here again she proves that she primarily 'acts' a song (as does Stritch). She may not always have the peerless pitch of Peters, MacDonald, or Mazzie, but damn, she knows how to select every dramatic cadence of a piece and subtly build it to its dramatic height. And may I add: though the rebooted 'Glamorous Life' suits Audra's technical skills to perfection, I wish she had been given (or selected?), 'The Miller's Son' - what some of us wouldn't give to see her grand slam that one!
.. my mistake in my earlier comment. i believe i was thinking of Jan Maxwell, Broadway, 2011 - and I still think very well of her version- but I misremembered its qualities.

I think one of the reasons I love Sondheim is that he seems to write with the acting in mind. His songs are complex, but they lend themselves to acting. It's hard to perform a Sondheim song just standing there looking pretty.

if you get patti lupone to look at you with such horror and shock, you must be doing something right
Audra is like, '' Oh my gosh, she's amazing. ''
And Patti is like, '' What the fuck....She's unbelievable . ''
Shekola Carrington @2:57!
I can't stop watching this. It's a daily thing now
Is there other songs like this that you know?
Same started watching about a month and a half ago and I just can't stop
2:52 the look on Patti's face is everything.
Or Aloni love the expression as it’s so dramatic! Haha
I thought the same!
This whole concert was mind-blowing.
You are absolutely correct. This concert was magical. It's was Mr. Sondheim's 80th birthday.
So much commitment. Even the wisp of hair that falls across her face at the end was like, "I'm going ALL IN!"
Wow. Best version of this song I've ever heard.

@@eschiss1 who's version is that you refer to?
Now, Donna can act. Passion is a masterpiece and so is this.
She's like a fine wine, better with age
i think Donna is incredible and most people don't know her, i just don't get how such an incredible talent can go unadvised
Such a proud, loving, “that’s my best friend” look from Marin Mazzie.
Wow, her ability to vary her colour is astounding!
She's beyond brilliant.....the nuances in this performance are something else! I can never listen to anyone else sing this again
Donna Murphy supremacy!!!
i swear i watch this at least once a month. donna is just legendary
I love how she starts this song by not even bothering to get up.

GE-NI-US.
And love for Patti Lupone's rapt attention and facial expression. Same goes for all of us.

A song that is an absolute gift to a singer and actress of the stature of Donna Murphy - she lived every word and every note of it.
Haha Patti's face at 2:52 is the best part of this!
James Winer Um. I'm not sure. Perhaps Donna changed the song in some way? Patti looks disturbed more than awestruck.😞
The quintessential performance of this song!!!!
That piece of hair was a paid actor
Elaine smiling so brightly at her at 0:57 gives me life
Donna Murphy's AWESOME
You can see the beauty of women in this wonderful performance 😍
She's like a fine wine, better with age
2:53 - 3:00 Patti's expression is priceless!
I love seeing Elaine laugh!!!
Wow. Gives me chill every time i rewatch. I love u ms Donna Murphy!
I love this so much! I watch this time and again and never get sick of it. Donna is just amazing!
A masterclass in performing, she's easily the most talented on that stage!
Bradley Judge No need to compare. Donna is definitely one of the best performers I have ever had the privilege to watch ♡♡♡
Donna is a powerhouse.
She is incredible! Such a breathtaking and memorable performance!
Man I REALLY want to see Follies now!!! O.o
Just absolutely mind blowing.
Great journey and build of a beautifully constructed, witty song!
Mother Gothel! :D
oh my god . i m not the Only person who See donna line mother gothel
+Daniel ! like*
Daniel ! That's because she played her lol
That's all I can hear.
Donna was absolutely fantastic in the role of Fosca in "Passion."
Donna Murphy really shows the heartbreak in her voice. Just listen from 3:08 to 3:18. Most especially when she says 'Yes'.......
Just brilliant.
Who is this demon lady?
Breathtaking!
Best performance of Follies I've ever seen. Even better than Andrews, to me.
Encore!
This sounds like The last midnight from into the Woods especially during the part where she's listing the stuff he should leave her
so true

It took me about 30 seconds to think "that voice sounds familiar." And another 30 to Google if she was the voice of Mother Gothel from Tangled.
I love this ending to Passion
