      @Jordan Belfort Well, in USA Covid is approaching having killed twice as many Americans as died in WWII. Several months ago Covid deaths surpassed those of the American Civil War. Because people are whisked away and isolated before they die, we don't directly see the deaths: No ones stumbling coughing and choking past our house, then collapsing, dying on our neighbors lawn. Instead, they do that in hospital.

    Oh bloody hell, I look away from the news for a few hours and this is what happens.😱😓 This is quite incredible and terrific. I’m surprised this hasn’t been more as the top headline for the whole day until now. To think within only a few minutes the island where the volcano erupted had already sunk again after seven minutes and has caused this much damage. Considering the multiple islands isolations, I guess it makes sense they’ve only got one fibre-optic cable, but to think it was powerful enough to sever it. The power of this thing is unbelievable. I guess it really is a once in a thousand year event. If it has been disconnected I guess only satellite and radio communications will be possible until others are restored.

      The satellite phones are expensive. Do you have one? If not, why?? Same for them. Hindsight is always so clear to some people, but they forget to imagine life PRIOR to the event where hindsight is so clear,,,,,,.
      The island is not that modern as we understand here in Canada, or even like a country like Cubs. The island is quite basic. There’s a large portion of the people living by subsistence,,,,,, electronics are hardly on their so called radar,,,,,,,. It’s how much food do we have,,,,, is our shelter ok,,,,, there are small pockets of modern society there. The unfortunate part is they primarily live off of the sea so their homes are right on the shore or very near. Only being 1 story high the homes don’t provide protection from a tsunami. There’s video out there showing that many people were not at risk at all as well. They will rally and help each other. When ships arrive there help will be available from the outside. Air support will be minimal. Maybe military drops of necessary supplies.

      Tongans are not rich "westerners" but a self sustaining farming community who trade/barter a lot and most cash comes from tourism (no tourism since covid started) and money sent home by Tongans living abroad, mainly in Australia & New Zealand & USA They are not a rich nation and telecommunications are owned by royalty & nobles, so commercial decisions dictate connectivity. A very low % of the population own cell phones, still preferring old ways of communicating - face to face, especially on a Sunday, when all shops & businesses close down so people can go to church & meet each other. With just over 100k population, expensive satellite & submarine cabling, is an expensive option for this small nation and not really an option.

      @@ZackChimento Not sure where you're getting your sources from either because there were many considerations on the ground AND because of COVID. Something that had Tonga government officials very worried would make the situation a lot worse on the ground with contact from foreign sources. This just happened on Saturday so now that a protocol has been set in place and has been deemed acceptable to the Tongan government. Things are moving ahead. Add to that the sporadic communications because their fiber optic line to the world had been knocked out. Assesing the situation on the ground has been extremely difficult. I'd say a 48hr response given everything that's happened is more than adequate. So stop being so dang negative and get your facts right.

    these are the kind of places star link should target when a disaster happens. internet provided when its needed most - communication, data transfers - star link when its needed.

      @johncarlaw8633 2 года назад +2

      @Deemo 85 If they had some sort of roaming perhaps in a future world but not any time soon.
      Most of their current satellites need a ground gateway station nearby. No gateway within 2,000 km, no internet with cable cut even if it had a gateway. At this moment it is possible a satellite may be able to talk to a station on the horizon via NZ gateway on the horizon for a few seconds every few minutes in the best conditions. Maybe good for short emails.
      Ground units are geolocked, they work in a limited area. Not many sales in the area if it doesn't cover it with any reliability.
      If they get up to most satellites being laser they don't need a ground gateway station nearby.
      It could work for limited remote communication but being entirely commercial I doubt they will fully support a handful of stations in millions of sq km of ocean unless they pay a premium to make it worth their while, which makes it even less attractive. Perhaps limited access at a lower cost for the publicity but disaster communication with a 'brought to you courtesy of Starlink' logo may not be a look they want.
      Earth is 75% covered in ocean, spacecraft have a power budget.
      Disaster agencies and military that are involved in support already have alternative means.

    I wonder how the volcano affect submarines and if divers could hear it if they were diving around the pacific

    • @tdolan500
      @tdolan500 2 года назад +1

      Actually quite a complex question to answer, it all depends on the depth. There’s thermocline layers in the ocean, at a certain depth (SOFAR) sound carries an incredible distance, this layer can also act as a barrier. So maybe the actual shock wave may not be felt but submarines can be effected by displacement of water from storms, tsunamis etc
      I’ve read some accounts of Subs being rocked by storms while down at 100 metres and subs being picked up, almost surfacing and then being pushed down 800 metres by Tsunamis.
