    Leslies & Vibes kick ass! Their slow and fast sounds are very diff so they're actually two trick ponies. People mainly think of Hendrix & Trower but many guitarist have used Leslies as well as vibes. My personal fave is Frampton. His use of the Leslie on Comes Alive is oustanding! He ramps between the two speeds to match the emotion of each moment perfectly. Rock On!

    The chief difference between the two is that the traditional capacitor-value spacing in a Uni-Vibe produces broad shallow *dips*, whereas a phaser produces more focussed and deeper notches. The perceptual consequence is that we notice where the notches are with a phaser. The fact that we pay attention to the location of the notches with a phaser is also why phasers can, and do, use feedback to further emphasize the location of the notches at this moment. Feedback is rarely, if ever, used with a vibe unit because it does nothing of use. Another difference between them is that, because it allows for identifiable peaks and notches that we can pay attention to, the slowest speed on a phaser is much slower than that on a vibe unit. The effect of a vibe is subtle enough that it *must* be modulated faster to be noticeable. That's simply how human perception works, rather than anything electronic. Folks who have vibrato pedals, or phasers, or vibes, that can also do vibrato will also know that a very slow sweep in a vibrato mode is simply imperceptible. It needs to be faster to be audible.
    Also worth noting, but rarely discussed, is that the classic Uni-vibe sound involves 4 allpass stages, while phasers can have anywhere from 2 to 12 stages, all yielding different sounds (I find that anything more than 8 is useless for guitar since guitar doesn't provide the bandwidth for the extra notches to be created).
    The classic use of a vibe is to place it before something that clips to a greater or lesser degree. Because the vibe produces broad shallow dips, it moves large segments of the guitar signal closer to, and away from, the clipping threshold. This moves around where the additional harmonic content is generated. I like to think of it as the difference between additive and subvtractive synthesis. In subtractive, we start out with a harmonically rich signal, and scuplt away what we don't want with filters. Additive synthesis involves adding the harmonic content you want at different points to create different timbres. Vibes do something like the latter, when placed before a pedal or amp that can produce clipping when pushed a little harder. That's what provides the pleasing swirly animated sound that players like so much. You CAN do that to some extent, by placing any phaser before an overdrive, making sure to keep the feedback/emphasis in the phaser either off or minimal. But a vibe just does it better by defocussing where the dips are, such that the additional harmonic content created as it moves doesn't seem to show up in any particular range.

      Jimi Hendrix used a vibe _after_ a fuzz and it sounded pretty good, no? (But if you rely on the amp for your dirt, then the vibe is still before the clipping, so it'll still sound good I suppose)

    "Uni vibe" is just a nuetered phaser.there is deffinatly an overlap on most pedals where the top end of vibes is the bottom end of a phaser. vibe is typically deeper and slower. Phasers are again typically more shallow and quicker. But most can be pressed to fill the others shoes. Now it comes down to alot of branding and user preferences.

    I don’t have a phase but I do have the TC Vibe. It’s so much fun. I’d love to get a tone print to make it sound more like a Phase 90 though.

    I find that my BJF designed Bearfoot MInt Green Vibe covers most bases - like he said, you can make it sound phase-like or vibe-like. Some vibes are so deep and throbby that it's not really possible to get that classic Phaser tone
    Kinda like how a good TC Delay will cover all your delay needs, it's simple but effective.
    Having said that, I own several other vibes and phasers and just had to get a Phase90 back on my board, and an EHX Bad Stone, and a...
    Ahem. I'll stop there.

    If I could only get one I'd get both. Got the blood moon which is a really good and affordable phaser and adding the vibe to the list is on the price ballpark of getting the helix alone. Sure the helix is way more versatile that the blood moon, but if you're on a budget you still get phaser and vibe. Plus vibe is way harder to reproduce with analogue electronics. It's like the spring reverb of phasing. You really need a digital device to emulate it correctly.
    TC, I've got to say, you've got some really awesome low end pedals you should showcase with these high end ones. For example the tube pilot is such a great, simple and cheap overdrive. It sounds great and I hardly see it in videos. Same goes for the echo brain analogue delay. Simple and gets the job done with the original sound of its time.

    Is that a Pro Junior? Great amp, rehouse one in a larger cabinet, turn it into a 1x12, whatever - it's an amazing amp. Better than a Tweed Blues Jnr, which I use and like, but something about the Pro is just better.

    • @rockkevinrock
      @rockkevinrock 5 лет назад +3

      That song was recorded in 1970, and these guys on this video are saying the Phase 90 wasn't produced until 1974, so probably it's a Leslie cabinet (rotary speaker).

      @Antonio Cavicchioni Very welcome, your question made me curious so I checked Google and Wikipedia and read a few people's comments and opinions of how that tone was created. The guitar tone on that song definitely seems to have the characteristics of a phaser to me, it does not have the vibrations of a univibe. If I were playing it now I would just use a phaser.
