A note about the Japanese pronunciations: oftentimes, a vowel sound will be silent without any clear indicators to tell you which ones should be pronounced or not. A good example is Gastrodon; you guys called it Toritodon, but a more accurate reading would be Tritodon. The first o is silent to make it sound more like Triton. Same with Skuntank; none of the u sounds in its name are pronounced , so it sounds more like Skatank.
I'm a anime weeb so I know Japanese like the back of my head. Well not really but I know how to say names and how to say phrases easily. Still good if I say so myself 👍✨
Vowel devoicing is more like the vowels get whispered or "muted", since each vowel would retain the same intended length (the mora length). In this case トリトドン could be pronounced T'-ri-to-don (instead of Tri-to-don), but the important thing is to keep each mora (the "syllables") the same length. So saying To-ri-to-don fully voiced would be acceptable tbh. Same with Su-ka-tan-ku (or if you prefer to devoice, S'-ka-tan-k') Speaking of mora, when reading rōmaji/romanisations you'd also want to look out for macron lines above vowels (indicating prolonged vowel sounds, like the ō in rōmaji above) and double consonants (like オンバット Onbatto (Noibat) being pronounced On-bat-to)
This is not true at all. i and u can be devoiced, but they still have syllabic weight. No other vowel is ever devoiced in Japanese, but could be in loanwords.
People gotta remember, Avalug does still have a 117 Attack in combination with its 184 Defense. If its special defense wasn't less then 50 it could have been a half-decent mon
To be fair, Gamefreak probably intentionally drops Pokemon that are "meh" to outright "bad" like Bergmite/Avalugg on purpose in order for the really good Pokemon to shine even more. For instance, Avalugg may be really bad for an Ice type, but Cetitan is actually a good bulky Ice type that can tank even a super-effective hit or two. But in general, the Ice type really should get an overhaul at some point by perhaps re-tuning it by making it strong against one or two additional types (such as Water, or making the Frozen status more likely to work against Water types in general?) and giving it a couple new resistances like to Water (for the same reason I suggested making Water weak to Ice) and Electric (since Ice is a very poor at conducting electricity)....especially since there are at least a few genuinely good Ice types like Glaceon, Froslass, Frosmoth, and the aforementioned Cetitan. Maybe even add a few new Ice type moves that accentuate this, like how we already have the move Freeze Dry as a super-effective hit against Water, maybe add an Ice move (or ability) that weakens Water & Electric moves from opposing Pokemon and/or an offensive move that's super-effective against Electric types (or possibly acts like the Disable effect except that it blocks *ALL* Electric moves from working while in effect, like an Ice type variant of Light Screen/Reflect, or an ability that does the same thing but disables Electric moves for as long as that Pokemon is active in the battle). This could give Ice types a bit more utility against two of the more commonly used types (that being Water & Electric). but I'm mostly just spitballing ideas here. :P
honestly, the editing was too much for my taste. every 2 secs theres a zoom, some noise or something else happening. sometimes you cant even follow whats happening. makes it kinda exhausting to watch sadly
@@Qwtzuuu Cannot support this more. The editing was WAYYY TOO MUCH. Had no idea what was happening nor what damage rolls were. Half the time we would only see one Pokemon. Like who is out against who????
I love the edits. I think they make the video more engaging, but I can see how it would be hard to follow for a lot. The one complaint I have every time is not being able to see how many Pokémon are alive. Though that’s not exclusive to Luke’s videos.
Fun fact: quilava’s Japanese name (magumarashi) comes from the Japanese word for magma (maguma) and storm (arashi). So it’s name is literally magmastorm.
That crit definitely mattered - a modest Mewtwo with 252 sp.atk vs a Giratina (probably modest or quiet? idk) with 252 hp (assuming no investing in defense), a crit had an ~75% chance of OHKO when the Giratina was damaged (assuming around 65% health) Either way, a great battle and video nonetheless, keep up the great work Lukey!
Normally I don’t enjoy the battling segments of these videos as much as the choosing segments, but this was an absolute banger! Top tier editing and a super close match!
as someone who studies Japanese this video is soo funny. it sounds like everyone in beginners classes week 1. the pronunciation isn’t actually that bad though
should do a linked starter randomizer vs... you would pick left/middle/right random starter from your set, when you pick left from first set, opponent would have to take left pokemon from their first set. and then opponent would pick from the next set. and let say they pick middle, you would have to take middle from 2nd set. do it three times each for a full team of 6.
The zoom in and out non-stop makes it so it is totally impossible to follow the battle. No idea what the health bars are looking like or the damage from each moves. Maybe slow down on the editing?
If Dylan just kept using shadow ball, he would’ve killed gastro easy in maybe an extra turn, be plus like 4, and then maybe changed up the RNG so he didn’t get Crit
This was fun. I hope you guys do this again, but pick up a few tips on Japanese pronunciation. If it helps, Japanese vowels are pronounced exactly the same as Spanish vowels. And when you see one of those lines above the vowels, it means to hold out the sound of the vowel a bit longer.
It's the same reason why Feraligatr is missing an O, in older games there was a 10 character limit. I think they increased it in Gen 6, because we have mons like Fletchinder
These videos with the Japanese names are clearly expanding their knowledge of that vocabulary since they seem to pick up on certain different things every single time!!
i genuinely love the language so much and wish i had the time and capability to learn it fully, anime has taught me a few bits here and there but i genuinely love trying to pronounce all the names and words from shows and media n stuff :D
hey luke where did you get the sleeping mew plush?? I rlly hope you reply to this because mew is my favorite pokemon and my birthday is soon i wanna send it to my mom
Hate to be that person but it's "video wo tanoshinde" :) (the w in wo isn't really pronounced) Tanoshinde on its own can mean "enjoy, have fun!" Pronounciations were good though!
What's your favourite Japanese Pokémon name? :D
As a VGC player my favourite Japanese names would be バドレックス , ザシアン, グラードン, and ルナアーラ
Enbuoh, Goronda, Fushigidane, Lizardon, Ringuma, Zenigame, Hinoarashi.
These are most the ones I know from memory.
Probably Miniryu for Dratini because it literally means mini dragon
GEKOUGA
Haryman
It makes me giggle

It’s also slow as malasses. And mono-ice type.
4:45 Honestly, Metamon does sound like if they made Ditto into a Digimon lol
Earth Power takes out 3/4 of the health bar:
Luke: “That did absolutely NO damage”. 😂😂
that was the damage with stealth rock support so it was pretty less if you look at scovillan's spdef
@@-s4w-550yeah it had already taken 25% from stealth rock cuz fire type
the editing on this vid and the humor in it is so good LOLLL absolute banger as per usual

The legendary reveals from both you had me DYING. The music cut for Luke revealing Giratina 😂😂
Absolute peak comedy, the moment Luke realized its Mewtwo. I laughed so hard
Dylan saying "Thank you God" for getting Giratina was the highlight lol
as a Japanese person, Luke's japanese is really good. Dylan got pretty close on a lot but some of those characters were way off. I love this effort 😊
Imagine for a fusion pick, Gholdango and Klawf, literally just reskins him to Mr Krabs
5:27 The way he pronounces Raichu is so cool

ヤマアラシっていう哺乳類でもあります!進化するとバクフーンなので嵐や台風、爆風などのイメージなので製作者は狙っていると思います。
Toritodon made me think of dorito right away and seeing a small clip of someone eating them right after really got me laughin 😂
6:43 "I tried so to kinda like butcher it"
Instead you pronounced it *PERFECTLY* 😂
I’m not knowledgeable about video editing BUT I felt like the editing on this video was next level and know that it was super fun
what's so ironic is, Dylan picked Satan (Giratina) and said "Thank God" because its a legendary
The battles between this two are always so good!!
8:54 was wild 😭😭😭😭
Luke being cheeky with the Eevee makes me retract my statement about Dylan being cheeky on the shiny Ray Ray

7:20 I would have never thought Dylan would be saying that... and then thanking God too! Lmao
Their setup, their personality...all this neon stuff. Why do all of them look so similar?
Even so, good content here.
i actually took inspiration from dylan for my setup and we’re like best mates so it makes sense why were similar hahaha
Toritodon (Gastrodon) right away made me wanna sing the new anime's ED lmao
all legendaries have the same name in all languages so it's hilarious when one shows up
3:50 B tier? Nah, Vespiquen is BEE tier 😂😂😂
The fact that you've uploaded this video on my birthday when i've ginally managed to fly to japan is such an awesome coincidence
Watching Lockstin's videos on the Japanese names teaches a lot

That's the thing about legendaries. Their names are usually the same(or really close) in every language.
6:24 Burst with laughter 🤣🤣
Luke saying it is so close while still having a urshifuu in the back
Dylan: Alright... This is rigged.
I was dying of laughter
Incredible video as always! shout out to the editor for smashing it as always!!
You guys should do a pick ur starter challenge then build them with their radical red moves and abilities
The zoom in and out non-stop makes it so it is totally impossible to follow the battle. No idea what the health bars are looking like or the damage from each moves. Maybe slow down on the editing?
Sounds like a skill issue, he shows the HP bar every time an attack lands
I just wanted to say good job on your channel and good luck in the coming years
Gekkouga is such a cool name for a Pokémon.
Can’t go wrong with *SATOSHI GEKKOUGA*
Vespiqueen in B (BEE) tier was a joke literally handed to the editor but unfortunately it was a BEEt too farfetched.
damn that crit clutch from mew two save the team from giratina solo carry
The original overpowered legendary wanted to prove that he's still a monster.
This dude always hits crits when he needs to win the battles, happens everytime
If Dylan just kept using shadow ball, he would’ve killed gastro easy in maybe an extra turn, be plus like 4, and then maybe changed up the RNG so he didn’t get Crit
Dylan: I CHOSE YOUUUUU SATAN
Also Dylan: Thank you God.
The irony 😂
Mewtwo: What is a devil to a god?
Avalugg: What is a god to a table?
Almost shat myself on 3:33 dude that catch me off guard
I think dylan forgot hisuian avalugg existed because it wouldve been better for his team
Was Mewtwo tera normal? I think I saw it for a split second, and that could have been used to take one hit from the giratina if psystrike hadn't crit.
This was the most fun one of these I've seen so far.
“I pick you SATAN” 😂😂 7:20
Very religious, Christian Dylan: I PICK YOU, SATAN!
when they say "that does NO damage" and the attack does half or more of the enemy's health.... no, I think that does good damage.
I'd love to play this with a friend. Interested to know how they randomise on this game and then select the pokemon they need ❤
@Gloomie Sounds confusing 😅. I've used an emulator for older games. Didnt know newer ones had them
My text notification is “hello there” gave me a jump
Thanks to this video I just realized that Vespiquen doesn't have a "queen" in its name... it's missing an "e"
It's the same reason why Feraligatr is missing an O, in older games there was a 10 character limit. I think they increased it in Gen 6, because we have mons like Fletchinder

That's why you always Tera dark when you ho against a mewtwo
Idea: get 4 of you guys to all randomize your starters 1 time. Do a free for all with your team being your 3 random starters
"I THANK YOU SATAN !" lmao 😭😭
Thank you Luke! I've been saying since day one Klawf sounded like a cow.
Good battle, and is it weird of me to like the different ways they make to pick pokemon more then the battles? 😅
It's always fun when you two battle! 🤣
yooo the thundabit arena?? so sick!

Why was this actually such a good battle I was pogging the whole time 💀
Fun fact: Dakuma is also the german version of kubfu
I love your content dude
Hmm i got ad for learning japanese on a video revolving around the Japanese names of pokemon… cool.
Wow he put a clip of Ryback eating cool ranch Doritos lol.
Okay I liked that. Now I need it in a lot of different languages, if that is possible. :D
Like Spanish, French, German, etc. ^^ I'd love that
Why not try this but with the French Names?
I’m a Pokémon player who was born in Japan so easy dub for me if I was in this challenge.
Oooh you finally hit 400k!
I would easily make the obvious names sound not obvious

I pick you Satan, said the man who goes to church on Sundays 😮
hey luke where did you get the sleeping mew plush?? I rlly hope you reply to this because mew is my favorite pokemon and my birthday is soon i wanna send it to my mom

The BOY WHO fainted😂
I love gastrodon proud you picked that ❤
You should do other languages, like German/French/Spanish Pokemon names.
Spanish and Portuguese Uses the same names as The English Ones Exept For Form Names And The Paradox so won't make sense For They To make a Video
The katakana ones are hilarious

Choose your starter only knowing it is Japanese name
Love the new editing style
The reason you like hisuian typhlosian is because you have the same Hairline sorry Luke love the vids but It was just to open for me to say nothing
I thought first why do you have to guess what dakuma is and then I noticed oh it has a other name in English in german the name is dakuma 😂
ALRIIIIGHT, THIS IS RIIIIIGGED
our viet-dub in pokemon anime always show their japanese name so this challenge kinda be easy:v
Missed opportunity for ba-nani
The Japanese in this is top tier and so is the battle what a close fight and a great video
The ō is literally just a longer o
When one of your bros know Japanese and you don’t 💀
But this is such a good video, wonder if they will go for Chinese or German, even French maybe?
dylan getting satan and thanking god
