I don't understand what you are saying. Roy Hargrove is perfect, but today not so much? So when was he perfect? Thought you were referring to this piece. What path is he going down anyway?
Yeah I was referring to this video. Great stuff. But if you see Hargrove live today, not so much. His range is completely gone. Solos are unimaginative. He leaves the stage while his band plays their solos. There are lots of rumors of hard drugs. And he was arrested last year for buying cocaine. Sad to see.
Should be a classic that all kids study in their teens Might be a way into melody, HARMONY and technique that serves the artistic whole. God bless you Roy, saw you in Brecon, Wales, around 1990 with Antonio Hart. Never forgotten the energy and musicality of that gig. Love from the UK- Sonny Rollins had you right. You were up there with the best. For the love of you and your family, don’t think you’re alone and unforgotten. You’ll always be with us. ❤️
Talk about stumbling across a gem of a performance. All props to the soloists aside, the fact is that Spike Wilner's piano work is what makes this thing groove. There are lots of versions of this chart out there, but this is the flat out funkiest one I've ever heard.
Singing it well Cyrille; and that band: Guys, Roy, Joel, Spike, Phillip and Joey are a group of musicians that grooved us along with this tune. Great sound/showmanship. ......
it was a great Jazz solo. but for me Roy Hargrove got inside the composition more...first few phrase were so on...look it's subjective, i get it...that is the beauty of it.
This is great music! It's a shame that the jazz world can't be more supportive of its artists instead of having so much criticism for every little thing. She's no ella but she's good AND this is a good performance of a great standard. Let's share love instead of vindictiveness. Make jazz last with love!!! It takes a hell of alotta passion and courage too be a jazz musician because of all this judgementalness.
I could watch this solo by Joel Frahm 100 times and never get bored. Holy shit. Did he quote hot house somewhere in there? The guy’s vocabulary is endless.
@TRUMPFOREVER He died of some kind of kidney disease. Do you have a source that says that this is drug related? I think he might have just had really shitty luck with his health issues.
Randy Brecker relates that when he played with Horace Silver, Horace would often tell him to "make a statement and don't repeat yourself." I love Hargrove's general sense of musicianship and proportion. He is comprehensive but not excessive.
I have a four year old boss (daughter) who doesn't let me listen to what I want for long (but she likes listening to Ella and Joe Pass), but when your video came on auto play she got up to see who it was and then let it play :)
Leo Kim You might have a child prodigy right there! ELLA was/ is still is the VERY BEST ! &JOE PASS WAS & MAYBE STILL is the VERY BEST ...definitely one of the very very best guitarists all time! And this lady has a pretty voice! And very good arrangements on this tune ( my favorite since like I was 10?).The musicians are awesome in this video! I wish if the sax solo went higher in the middle part of his solo, though.I bet the vocalist sounds great on bosanova numbers!
Music is like our direct plug to God!! Thank you Angels we need God now on this earth walk around Lord smote this evilness out HALLELUJAH amen thank LORD
Just discovered this. Can't believe it has been here for 13 years. Aside from the obvious superb musicianship, the videography was great, given the limitations of the venue (e.g., that guy's big head).
What a wonderful collaboration of a group of incredibly talented people, where the whole is more then it’s individual pieces. Fantastic. This is real deal, funky stuff. I wish i would have been there.
Everything about this says professional. This is the most perfectly executed song I've ever heard. And the drummer. Dude got in the pocket and stayed in the pocket. Nice light touch.
Wow! They all brought out the best in each other. Each solo a fantastic part of a lively conversation. This makes me realize how much I miss my Jazz buddies.
Last night I dreamt about listening a song called Love Sales, it sounded like Jennifer Hudson's Crush, this is the first song that comes out when you type it on RUclips and I like it...
I came here today after seeing you at the Gwacheon jazz picnic. You're so good at scats, you sing well, you have good stage manners, and you're the best. Welcome to Korea 😀🙏.
finding amazing that nobody talks about the PERFECT solo by Roy Hargrove. Roy just plays the TRUTH every time he blows his horn.
+drlluc goes without saying, Roy crushes anything he touches.
+drlluc when you say "the truth" what exactly do you mean?
+drlluc 2010 Roy Hargrove is perfect. Roy Hargrove today: not so much. It's incredibly sad to see the path he's been going down.

Joel Frahm looks like a high school math teacher, but happens to be one of the baddest sax players on the planet!
Check him out with the incredible Sant Andreu Jazz Band- and he's playing all those quotes from Bird...and other tunes, whilst Spike is on fire ....
Did you mean "worst"? I don't think is a word.
Y el el 9.30am que le dio
@@cacambo589 "baddest" is an expression. and noone gets to use "joel frahm" and "worst" in the same sentence.
Well spotted you are so right
This video aged like a fine wine
No one is mentioning the bass player in the comments, that beginning is gorgeous!
Yes, and listen to the drummer! The rhythme section is so important!
This is one of my favorite Roy solos ever. The phrasing, the vocabulary, the style, the groove. He just had it all
WDR and the rev RH... Simply priceless....
R.I.Power to one of the all time greatest musicians in Roy Hargrove
I saw Roy play when he was a student at Berklee (long before he was "famous"). I knew then that he was special. Great reminder.
I saw Roy play live a couple of times and he was absolutely amazing. Rest in power brother
African Americans here in my city of New Orleans have a lifespan 25 yrs less than the avg white man. ...No good reason for it. 🆘🆘🆘
Roy's solo is legendary.
Should be a classic that all kids study in their teens

This is what Jazz is all about- everyone listening to each other and being creative but getting into the vibe of the tune.
Joel Frahm is so underrated! I am in love with his playing.
Underrated ? He's one of the most recognised tenor players nowadays !
@@IRACEMABABU and still he deserves so much more

totally agree! nice phrasing on your part too....
My thoughts exactly (three years later)
#truth
Singing it well Cyrille; and that band: Guys, Roy, Joel, Spike, Phillip and Joey are a group of musicians that grooved us along with this tune. Great sound/showmanship. ......
This tenor solo is perfect. Great Bop Lines, Tone, Phrasing and Intensity. Amazing...
That tenor saxophone solo was INSANE!

bktrptmusic not to mention all the theory you have to learn ..plus the technique to carry it off

same
Insane comping from the pianist!
Yea, a lesson to so many.
Manolo Medina this guy is the owner of this club by the way)
Big time. So much extraction of different styles and harmonic influence!
That's Spike Wilner. He also owns the club.
Joel frahm is just unreal!
Ciccio tocco
Like Trane...
Roy did great job and summarized JAZZ.
RIP Roy Hargrove. Gone much too soon.
Drums🔥
god I had no idea...
@TRUMPFOREVER He died of some kind of kidney disease. Do you have a source that says that this is drug related?
I think he might have just had really shitty luck with his health issues.
RIP
@@dahalofreeek why should this be drug related ? Disease is enough. Anyway, we miss him, whatever the cause of his death. Strange question
I want to thank Spike Wilner for perfect comping.
Huge props to the rhythm section for keeping it swinging 🔥🔥🔥

Agree. At his most basic level of play RH's sound was carefully considered and constructed.
Is just Magic. Love it. Beautiful
Roy hard groove is just a present from above
Magnifique, ici tout y est, du pur jazz comme l'aime avec Cyrille Aymé !
Roy, no useless phrases. Simple and great!!
damn - no weak link in this chain - all astounding - this is the dream live gig you're always trying to find
Love Cyrille's voice and style. Wonderful.
That scat is timeless! Love that technique. Thank you.
I have such a musical crush on this girl! I can tell she's studied with Jimmy Greene. I can't get this version out of my head! Amazing job!
Ce thème a été interprété par Ella , oscar Peterson , Billie holiday , mel tormet …… etc ..et vous ! Bravo bravo 🎉 !!! J adore
What a sax solo!!! BLAZIN!!!
Everyone here is top flight
Roy can't help but swing! He's never played an untasty note!
Pretty sure he played plenty of those on the way.

Joel Frahm is a monster!
Top-notch perfomance. Joel Frahm is truly honest.
Let's not forget the vocalist, excellent scat singing and phrasing!!!! LOVE FOR SALE, IS THE CD FOR SALE TOO??!!! LOVE IT!!!!!!!!!
What a great night that must have been in Smalls. ❤
Holy moly that sax solo
Joel F loves those upper intervals.
She can really improvise with her voice like an instrumentalist, which not many singers can really do.
Hell, her scat-singing is just PERFECT! What a pleasure for ears.
Killing! I love the way Roy plays and listens!
Beautiful comping on the piano Spike!
I've listened to this recording more than hundred times still love it though.
Word's would not do justice to describe this performance.
As like to say about great solos.........Joel Frahm is out there with the buffalo! Monster playing!!!
Joel=goosebumps
moved me to tears
Wow! They all brought out the best in each other. Each solo a fantastic part of a lively conversation. This makes me realize how much I miss my Jazz buddies.
Mr. Saylor impresses with a piece of accompaniment that is just right.
This is just perfectly played by everyone (and sung!) The sax solo made me smile with joy!
