I grew up with the Commodores & followed Lionel Richie throughout his long career. I still listen to his music. I can tell you I recently left all the BS behind & ZOOMED to where the air is fresh & clear! I couldn't be happier & listening to the Commodores takes me back to a great time in my life. . Thanks for the post :)
This song is prophetic. Lionell would argue about his other massive tunes..but this one is one of the greatest ever. This and "Flyin' High". Monster songs!!! Pure genius.
I haven't heard this in years. It brought back such great mem'ries of that time in college and watching the Commodores ascend to greatness. And they gave one hell of a show back then as you can hear in this live album. Thanks for posting!
I remember buying this on vinyl & having it cranking, was a teen back in high school then. This song still has a way of taking me back to when times were so much simpler. (I've now had it on cd for years and still cranking it!!) Thx for the tune....and I'm still that foolish dreamer....
Everybody has their version of what Zoom means to them but this song was actually written by Ronald LaPread and Lionel Richie in tribute to LaPread's wife who had recently passed away. Great song with great meaning by a great group. COMMODORES FOREVER!!!
I am only 23, but I feel this song. Man this is real Music. I listen to some of these songs today and I just get pissed. My husband does not understand why I am not a big fan of today's music. But when you listen to this there is no comparison between the two.
i read recently where lionel said that he and the commodores are going to reunite for a tour hopefully in the next couple yrs...he said they should do it before they lose anymore members as for me, this is my alltime favorite group...i hope they get back together for a tour...and i believe the commodores live lp from which this was taken is the standard by which i judge all live performances to this day!!! absolute classic album that ranks with anything ever put out in my opinion
I saw them perform this song when it was new and the place went wild. By the time the sang this, the whole 70s audience was "zooming" and flying away, if you know what I mean.
I am dedicating this song to my friend, bar buddy and sometimes date. Michael McClain of Oakland, Ca. This was one his favorite karaoke songs. He passed on September 6. We luv u!!! Buddys Angels
The Sound of MOTOWN! PURE GOLD!!! no junk came from Berry Gordy's Kitchen~~can i get a AMEN?? real song writing, arrangements, real instruments, real voices.........who's the next Berry Gordy, will he please stand up!~~we need real soul music back in our ears!~~ I'll pray for that day, that it wlll COME!~
I like that picture too with Thomas, WAK, J.D., Lionel & Clyde. The one that's missing is Ronald. The pic looks like it could've taken at Milan Williams funeral. That's the first new pic I've ever seen with the original Commodores in a while.
Know the feeling -- wish there were a local club everywhere so we could go to listen to great stuff spanning the decs; & every day & every weekend they'd highlight another era/certain groups -- would that be bad or what?!! Be so cool!!! I know I'd be there dancin' & so would my friends 'cause we used to hit all the dance clubs every weeknd & sometimes stay up all night, & I'd barely get thru work next day, then next week same! Saw Commodores in MI long time ago. This beautiful song gets to me!
But there is good soul music today. Just check out people like Maxwell, Jill Scott, Musiq Soulchild who is so reminiscence of Stevie it's beautiful. Don't get me wrong, I became obsessed with this song at only 6yrs. old and is the reason I've been playing guitar for 34 years.
u know i would love to see this Group reunite before it's to late! i know one of the original members have already passed away! so make it happen Fellows!!!!! u should have enough money by now! so do it for the Fans!!
I think we went to that same concert . . . a big one, Commodores, Isley Bros, Emotions, George Duke, Brick . . . best concert I ever went to . . . cheap, too, compared to today's concert prices . . . it was a blast at the Forum in LA . . .
Doggone it my volume won't go up anymore!!! I really enjoy the full version. Those suckers on the radio always cut out the verse!! Sail On, Just to Be Close to You,Sweet Love,Lady This is your life,Jesus is Love,Machine Gun, Three Times A Lady,Still OhNo,Wonderland,Slippery When Wet,young girls, Are You Happy? Brick House man so many. My first favorite band!! Takes me back to my college days when we thought we grown getting drunk and listening to some Ol School!!
Being unhappy where you are now, but keep dreaming. Hes dreaming about going out into the world to find love and live his true dreams. He wants to Zoom away from here. The first line is "I may be just a foolish dreamer. But I don't care. Cause I know my happiness is waiting out there, somewhere. I'm searching for that silver lining. Horizons I've never seen. I'll take just a moment to live my dreams. Zoom, I'll like fly for away where my mind is fresh is clear. People can be what they want to be
i was born in 1977 and this song is the song i picked from that year...its funny because I REALLY FEEL LIKE THAT IN LIFE TODAY...i just wanna get away from it all and go where i can just be myself..zoom zoom...
I remember this song when the Commodores was playing in Pittsburgh, Pa at the Civic Arena and they open the Dome up when it was sung with lights streaming on a wire like xmas lights leaving from the stage the top of the arena to outside. like as if you were being beam up or zooming away
ZOOM has a different meaning and purpose today. Still ZOOMing today....I still want to fly far away from here (Pandemic!!). Please ZOOM me away from Covid-19!!!
Just give me the Commodores Earth Wind Fire, Isley brothers, Chic, Barry White, and any band From the 70's.Just to name a few. You all can have today's music. I will be ok.
"ladies and gentlemen, at this particular time, the commodores would like to take you into their 1977 COMMODORE MUSICAL EXTRAVAGANZAAAA!" CLASSIC PERFORMANCE
Thanks for the info. About that 1990 performance, where was it at? I'm interested. If they don't perform together again, I'll be saddened. I do hope the Commodores are enshrined in the Rock & Roll hall of fame as group first before Richie gets in as a solo artist. Both are well deserving of that honor...that's LONG OVERDUE!
The Commodores would be my pick. My comments were in response to some idiots dissing of my favorite soul singer without provocation. For all I know, it could have been you.
Lionel reunited with Thomas & Ronald in 2009 during his performance at the Essence Music Fest for a few songs including Brick House. Lionel wants the band to reunite and they did try around 1989 but things didn't work out.
I think only one of the original members is deceased, Milan Williams. However, of the 6 that were together during their heyday, only 2 still tour with the band, William King and Walter Orange. Richie, Thomas McClary, and Ronnie LaPread all left in the 80s and have not returned.
These guys were one of very few groups who sounded better live than in the studio. Saw them in the 70's and they played Rick James' 'You and I'. Needless to say they sounded like it was their song and it sounded better than Rick. And I saw Rick and he jammed that song but they were still better. BTW, Zoom was always my favorite Commodores song.
Thanks for this version Impacking. I remember seeing the Commodores for the 1st time in 1971 w/the J5 at the S. F Cow Palace. I saw them again in 1977 at the Oakland (CA) Coliseum. They turned it out!! No more bands like this today...can't understand it. Was the picture earlier in your powerpoint recent? I heard that they are supposed to be forming a reunion. I hope so!!
The Civic Arena was the place where a lot of great groups jam at like do you remember when the Mother ship landed? when Parliament Funkadelic came to town
agrees@iagreethe groups back then also had class&character neo soul groups are bringN the soul back, not sure why it has not caught on,mho its really up to the young ppl to get up stand up if they want (any kind) change jst started hi school when this came out:-)

this song was a jam the emotions and commodores toured together and both groups are awesome brings back memories
Everybody has their version of what Zoom means to them but this song was actually written by Ronald LaPread and Lionel Richie in tribute to LaPread's wife who had recently passed away. Great song with great meaning by a great group. COMMODORES FOREVER!!!
Brings back so many fond memories of my college days! This was the jam.
I am only 23, but I feel this song. Man this is real Music. I listen to some of these songs today and I just get pissed. My husband does not understand why I am not a big fan of today's music. But when you listen to this there is no comparison between the two.
we will never hear such great music like this again . what beautiful tunes this band and all in their era made .
Silkysmooth you are so right. I miss that magical decade of music--the 70s!
This is a timeless masterpiece that I never get tired of listening to.
i read recently where lionel said that he and the commodores are going to reunite for a tour hopefully in the next couple yrs...he said they should do it before they lose anymore members

I love this song when I feel down and want to just get away from everyone, this song takes me to that place of comfort and peace.
I saw them perform this song when it was new and the place went wild. By the time the sang this, the whole 70s audience was "zooming" and flying away, if you know what I mean.

Someone asked me about the best slow jams of all time. This song and This is your life are on my short list..
I like that picture too with Thomas, WAK, J.D., Lionel & Clyde. The one that's missing is Ronald. The pic looks like it could've taken at Milan Williams funeral. That's the first new pic I've ever seen with the original Commodores in a while.

Real musicians making real music! Bring back the funk!

Have they reconciled? Would love to see them together again. ZOOM!
