I once made an experiement in which I placed a 3 gold chevrons Praetorian Guard on a bridge, and let 3 gold chevrons Royal Spartan to try and push them off that bridge. The Praetorian Guard cut down more than 1k Spartans before they was routed. It was on 'Normal' difficulty btw
Tbh if you let the AI take over than yes thw romans win since AI just charges in without using its hoplite wall or anything good. If it was multiple spartans vs one guard, the guard win since the spartans just all charge in at the same time instead of trying to tire the guard out

There is a Demi god unit from DLC, the longsword cohort, they murder Praetorian guards and are half the cost. They even have a vs infantry bonus stat, the only infantry in the game to have one
Yes there is a “custom battle” button you can press that you find by Pressing on the Crossed swords in the main menu (just below the campaign button) that you can press , and then within that you find custom battles It as been in every total war for years and years including Rome 2 You can choose the factions for both sides and choose the units for both sides , and then fight as one of the sides against the AI , you can also select What type of battle (like Sieiges , towns , ambushes, ports , standard battles or even Massive naval battles) and where the map is and what landscape the map should be , aswell as even change the time , weather and Season believe ruclips.net/video/m6RjnSgla1E/видео.html The video above is for total war Attila . its most likely a custom battle, you are talking about campaign, this might be DEI where you can make certain units your general, but then again it might be this mod steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=335385464 or something among those lines, definetely not in vanilla CB, though.
This is nice and all...but dont make praetorians your general unit.... Add a separate general unit for each side and then measure the strenghts of other units vs praetorians... Whenever the general in you unit dies, praetorians lose...which is stupid...they are better than that...
To add something to the debate regarding these test battles... if the generals on respective side are in the fighting units then they are engaged then whichever side that is first to lose it's general will suffer a disproportional loss of morale and we will never get the true kill/death ratios. Refer to how Zerkovich on his channel always keeps the generals behind the units and always use five sets of each unit type when he did his tests for: 'Who's the BEST Anti-Large Monster?'; 'Who's the BEST Monstrous Infantry?'; 'Who's the BEST Cavalry?' 'Who's the BEST Melee Infantry Units?' 'Who's the BEST Low Tier Infantry?' 'Who's the BEST Missile Infantry?' ; in his series for Total War: Warhammer 2

If there is no General the highest tier unit will become general, this can be seen if a settlement has no army in it
