Zato was never pure evil. He had good intentions at heart but was ultimately consumed by hatred and then Eddie. Everyone deserves a second chance. And he's been doing aight so far.
My understanding is that the current Zato is so far gone from what he was that he's essentially a different person atoning for a past he has no memory of and almost zero connection to. The /only/ connections he has are that Eddie was there for him in what was basically Hell's sense deprivation tank/currently helps him, and that the only time he can feel any sort of emotion in his grey existence is when he's near Millia.
IF that is true then I think he deserves... a second first chance?
I mean, it depends on how you see things.
Does Millia deserve a good ending as well? She also murdered plenty of people (Regardless of circumstance, she was an assasin, and damn good at it).
Does faust? He might have been a good doctor, but he murdered way too many people as baldhead.
Does Asuka? His creation's led to the literal destruction of all japan, and 100 years of war.
Guilty Gear is all about characters with a deep sense of… well… _guilt._ Just about every character has deep regrets or feelings that they struggle with.
Faust has to contend with his days as Dr. Baldhead forever, all the blood on his hands. Millia is in the same boat, as is Zato.
Leo deals with survivor’s guilt; feels that he led so many to death that he himself deserves to die for all the families he left without sons and fathers.
Sol contends with the fact that he was indirectly responsible for the creation of the Gears, which terrorized mankind for decades.
Jack-O and Testament are both gears to a certain extent as well, facing the problems with it, since both thought themselves monsters and acted accordingly for a while.
Potemkin feels that fighting his war is wrong, but feels as though he won’t find peace unless he does.
Even Ky has guilt for the many years he spent slaying Gears, which were made out to be monsters for a long time, only for him to find one that was peaceful. Now he’s married to that Gear, and has to contend with all the lives he ended by convincing himself they were all subhuman.
Guilt is the name of the game here boyo. Do they deserve second chances for the things they’ve done? Maybe. Maybe not… the worst of us can stop digging a hole and crawl out… so why not these poor souls?
I play zato and when this part of the song comes on I always drop my combos when I’m labbing cause I’m too distracted by the song

And then i discovered zato, i listened to this theme and just cried. But i decided i'll main him, forever and ever, also my brother also had a hair similar to zato's one.

It's songs like this that makes me want to tell all the hardship I've been through, all bottled up and overflowing at this point. I had a pair of pugs that were my world, i had a cellphone full of pictures of them. Then one day my parents had to travel with me to a place where i would work, the trip for them was 5 hours for the whole trip. That day, during those hours, someone broke inside our home, they steal a lot of shit and, with it, the dogs. My mother was devastated, my father in disbelief, and i, for the first time in a long ass time, cried. It´s been a year since that happened and i still hold hope that, one day, i may see them again or, at the very least, learn that they are ok. Wherever you are Rolling and Jinny, i will always remember you guys, for you were my world.

@@thatoneclonetrooper5663 To be fair we had the pair of pugs (boy and girl) so for some people its easy for some people to just sell the puppies and let the dog girl get pregnant until she dies. Unfortunately for them the dog girl is sterilized so she can no longer suffer this fate.

Now he's got a crush on a princess who used to be the ex of the former queen (not related to each other, since the other queen took over and banished said queen)
He tried to take care of the former queen but realized how hard it was, he runs an orphanage and can't juggle all these things, so he asked a friend of the same group he is in to take care of her
Now he's just a shadow of his former self and feels like a complete failure
until well, the princess came along.
Zato's theme really is now hitting home for this disillusioned man.

A long time ago when I was in kindergarten and grade school, I had a crush. She was the first kid to show me kindness. She tied my shoe in kindergarten because I didn't know how to. She left in... was it 3rd or 4th grade? She told me she would miss me the most. Then she went away and I never saw her again. I didn't even realize I loved her until until much later. My memories of her remind me of a simpler time when I knew I was happy... I can't remember her face. I can't remember anything about her. Even that memory of tying my shoes, and her leaving... I can't remember any details. All I know is that they happened. All truly remember is her beautiful blond hair. Funny right? This song reminds me of my lost memories. I can empathize with Zato-1. We all have such lost memories. Too many people underestimate the art of games.

For many years I went in and out of therapy. In and out of mental health programs. When I remembered her... I was broken. I thought to myself, "I loved her and can't even remembered her. I lost her and didn't even notice." I was in the greatest despair in my life. The more I thought of her, the more I thought of other lost, sweet, memories. My first friend living a very hard life. Him becoming bitter and lost. I could only watch and there was nothing I could do to help. It's so very hard to remember the good times with him. Love is strange. Love often is painful. I love my family but it hurts to love them sometimes. You're still fairly young and maybe your pain will never truly heal, but one day... one day we will see somethings again. One day we can and will find something to love again. We may have drowned in pain and gain. But one day, we will find someone to carve their way. Even if our memories are lost, our pain never healed, we can and will love again. Like Zato-1. He has found a reason to keep existing. We are sure to carve our own way too. Sorry if it seems I was venting or going on a rant, but people need to here this even if this doesn't apply to them. I wish you luck.

This suddenly reminds me of my grandma, who is in her deathbed. Granted she is old and all and this is her fate, but this feels unfair. I used to have so many memories with her, and It's a gruelling pain to see her suffering in the bed for years, sometime you just want to let her go, let her rest in peace in heaven.
